Microsoft Defender SmartScreen and Google Safe Browsing both use reputation and threat intelligence to warn about dangerous websites and downloads. The key difference is where they apply: SmartScreen works in Microsoft Edge and can also check downloaded apps and files through Windows, while Google Safe Browsing is presented here as Chrome’s protection, with Standard and Enhanced levels. Neither service guarantees that a site or file is safe, and the official documentation does not establish a detection-rate winner.
What each protection checks
Microsoft Defender SmartScreen
In Edge, SmartScreen checks webpages against dynamic lists of reported phishing and malicious-software sites and analyzes pages for suspicious behavior. It also checks downloads against known malicious sites and unsafe programs. A warning that a file is not commonly downloaded means its reputation is uncertain; it is not proof that the file contains malware. Microsoft describes the feature as protection against phishing or malware websites and applications, and potentially malicious downloads (Microsoft Defender SmartScreen overview).

SmartScreen also has a Windows role beyond Edge. In supported configurations, Windows can check files that apps—including third-party browsers and email clients—try to download and run. Microsoft says this protection is aimed at malicious files from the internet, not files on internal locations or network shares (Microsoft Defender SmartScreen overview).
Google Safe Browsing in Chrome
Google says Safe Browsing analyzes the web and maintains lists of harmful sites. Chrome uses it to check sites and downloads, and it can warn about dangerous extensions, phishing, malicious or intrusive ads, abusive sites, and social engineering. Standard protection is on by default and protects against known dangers. Enhanced protection is an optional level intended to cover known and potential new dangers, including through more in-depth checks of suspicious downloads (Choose your Safe Browsing protection level in Chrome).

How the protections compare
| Area | Microsoft Defender SmartScreen | Google Safe Browsing in Chrome |
|---|---|---|
| Where it applies | Edge website and download checks, plus Windows app/file reputation checks in supported configurations | Chrome checks for sites, downloads, and extensions |
| Protection choices | Edge SmartScreen setting; Windows settings and organizational policies may also affect protection | Standard is the default; Enhanced is optional; No protection is also available but not recommended by Google |
| Less familiar threats | Reputation and behavior signals can lead to warnings about unfamiliar or rarely downloaded files | Enhanced is intended to cover potential new dangers and allows deeper checks of suspicious downloads |
| Windows integration | Can check downloads initiated by apps, including third-party browsers and email clients, depending on configuration | The cited Chrome guidance describes browser protection, not an equivalent Windows shell check |
| Documented data flow | Some URL checks and file-reputation checks send identifying or contextual information to Microsoft | Enhanced sends URL, page-content, extension-activity, and system information to Google for security purposes |
These differences describe scope and settings, not comparative effectiveness. Microsoft and Google explain how their own features work; the cited documentation does not provide a comparable head-to-head detection test.
What the privacy disclosures say
SmartScreen
Microsoft says Edge first uses locally stored classifications for high-traffic and known-dangerous URLs. For URLs outside those categories, Edge may send the URL, relevant site information, a device-unique identifier, and general location information for a synchronous reputation check. For downloaded files, information sent can include the file hash, filename, download URI, and device-unique identifier. Microsoft says service requests use HTTPS, results are stored locally, and locally stored URL or download information can be cleared by clearing browsing cache or download history (Microsoft Edge privacy whitepaper).

Safe Browsing Enhanced protection
Google says Chrome’s Enhanced level sends the visited URL, a small sample of page content, extension activity, and system information to Safe Browsing, and says this information is used only for security purposes. Because the disclosed data flows differ by protection level and product, these pages alone do not support a broad claim that one service is more private. Review the current settings and vendor explanations rather than treating the protections as equivalent (Google Chrome Help: Safe Browsing protection levels).

Microsoft Edge
- Open Edge and select Settings and more (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
- Go to Privacy, search, and services > Security.
- Review the Microsoft Defender SmartScreen setting. A work or school administrator may control it (Stay protected with Windows Security).
Windows Security
- Open Windows Security.
- Choose App & browser control, then review Reputation-based protection settings.
- Check options such as Check apps and files and SmartScreen for Microsoft Edge. Availability and behavior can depend on Windows version and configuration (Microsoft Defender SmartScreen overview).
Chrome
- Open Chrome and select More (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
- Open Privacy and security > Security, or use Safety Check to reach the security controls.
- Choose Standard protection or Enhanced protection under Safe Browsing. No protection is available but Google does not recommend it (Choose your Safe Browsing protection level in Chrome).
For work and school devices
Administrators can manage SmartScreen on Windows. Microsoft documents policies that can enable protection, prevent users from bypassing site or file warnings, and configure shell app-install and reputation settings (Microsoft Defender SmartScreen overview). This gives managed Windows fleets controls beyond an individual Edge toggle. For a personal device, a setting that appears unavailable or locked may be set by an organization.

What changed for Internet Explorer and IE mode
Microsoft’s November 4, 2025 notice says SmartScreen is no longer active in Internet Explorer or IE mode on Windows 11 version 24H2, version 25H2, and Windows Server 2025. Microsoft says it continues in Edge, Windows Shell, and other supported environments. This is a version- and mode-specific change, not a general end to SmartScreen (Microsoft Defender SmartScreen overview).
Which one should you rely on?
Use the protection built into the browser and operating system you actually use, and check that its relevant settings are enabled. On Windows, SmartScreen’s documented app/file checks can extend to downloads initiated outside Edge; in Chrome, the choice between Standard and Enhanced changes the protection level and the data Chrome says it sends. These features are warning systems, not standalone antivirus replacements: a warning does not establish that every file is malicious, and the absence of a warning does not certify a site or download as safe.
