If you want an assistant to work with what is already open in Edge, start with Copilot. If you prefer ChatGPT’s general assistant and web-search workflow, use ChatGPT in Edge. Neither choice is a proven universal winner: the available official documentation describes features and data handling, not a controlled comparison of answer quality.

What Copilot in Edge can do with your browser context
Microsoft describes Copilot as built into Edge. For personal use, sign in to Edge with a Microsoft account, open the webpage, video, or PDF you want to work with, and select the Copilot toolbar icon. You can ask about the content or request a summary. Microsoft says the initial notice or permission request for Edge information can vary by region. See Microsoft’s setup and context guidance.

Page-aware answers come with a context trade-off
Depending on your request, Copilot may use your prompt, recent conversation, current webpage, page title, open tabs, and browsing history. If you would rather keep the assistant from using web context, turn off Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web in Copilot settings. That control may reduce the usefulness of questions that depend on the page you are viewing.

Microsoft’s May 13, 2026 Edge announcement describes reasoning across multiple open tabs, along with features such as Voice and Vision, Journeys, Study and Learn, and writing assistance. The announcement describes these experiences across Edge desktop and its mobile app in Copilot markets, but individual capabilities can have separate eligibility and rollout conditions. What ChatGPT in Edge offers
You can use ChatGPT as a web service in Edge, including its web-search workflow. OpenAI says ChatGPT Search can provide links to sources and may rewrite a prompt into targeted queries for search providers. For local results, it may share approximate IP-derived location; OpenAI says it does not share the IP address itself or account information with search providers to run a search. Device location sharing is optional. These details apply to ChatGPT Search, not necessarily to every ChatGPT interaction. Read OpenAI’s explanation of ChatGPT Search.
OpenAI warns that ChatGPT Search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. Open the cited sources and check their publication or update dates, especially for consequential decisions.

Do not assume an Edge add-on has Copilot’s page access
A Microsoft Edge Add-ons listing for ChatGPT identified OpenAI as the publisher and described sidebar availability, but that alone does not establish the add-on’s current permissions or whether it can read the active page or multiple tabs. The available documentation does not show that the extension offers Copilot-equivalent browser-context access. Check the listing and permissions directly before installing or relying on it: ChatGPT in Microsoft Edge Add-ons.

Microsoft documents Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat in the Edge sidebar for users signed in to Edge with a Microsoft Entra account. It says enterprise data protection applies to prompts and responses. When a request uses page context, Edge may send relevant page information based on the prompt and user consent; Edge for Business can enforce data loss prevention policies. These protections do not replace your employer’s or school’s rules. Use the assistant and account your organization approves, particularly when prompts or page content could include confidential information.

Browse with Copilot can click, type, and navigate websites; the steps are visible and can be interrupted. Microsoft labels it experimental and warns that it may misinterpret instructions, make mistakes, or be influenced by malicious hidden instructions on webpages. Keep watch over its actions and do not use it for banking, stock trading, entering credit-card details, government or medical identifiers, or highly confidential data. The feature’s availability changes: Microsoft’s current guidance ties the consumer rollout to Microsoft 365 Premium in the United States, with more markets to follow. Check Microsoft’s Browse with Copilot availability and safety guidance before relying on access.

How to choose without guessing at answer quality
- Match the assistant to the work. For a page, PDF, video, or multiple open tabs, try Copilot’s browser-context workflow. For general conversation or ChatGPT Search, start with ChatGPT.
- Check account and availability. For work or school, confirm your organization permits the tool and account. For action-taking or newer Edge features, verify current eligibility in your region.
- Review the data you are sharing. In Copilot, decide whether web context clues should be enabled. For ChatGPT Search, distinguish its search-provider and location handling from other ChatGPT interactions.
- Compare with non-sensitive prompts. Try representative questions in each assistant and open the sources behind important claims. There is no controlled head-to-head benchmark here that supports declaring one more accurate or intelligent.
