Microsoft Confirms AC-3 App Crashes After Windows 11 KB5124010

Some legacy Windows 11 apps that rely on built-in AC-3 decoding may fail after KB5124010 or later updates. Microsoft is preparing a future fix.

Microsoft has confirmed that some Windows applications relying on AC-3 (Dolby Digital) decoding may fail to start or close unexpectedly after installing Windows updates released September 22, 2026, or later. The issue affects Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2; it does not mean every app, AC-3 file, or audio device is affected. Microsoft says it is preparing a resolution for a future Windows update.

What the KB5124010 AC-3 issue does

Microsoft describes an application compatibility problem involving AC-3 audio decoding. Depending on the app, it may fail at launch, exit without warning, or keep running until an audio feature—such as music playback—is used. Games, media players, and some productivity applications are among the examples Microsoft lists.

Microsoft says legacy applications that rely on Windows’ built-in audio decoding are more likely to encounter the problem. Many modern applications use their own decoding components and are unlikely to be affected. The notice does not describe a fault with speakers, headphones, cables, or a DAC.

Which Windows updates and versions are involved?

The trigger identified by Microsoft is an update released on September 22, 2026, or later. KB5124010 is a preview cumulative update—not the September 8 security update. Its support page lists Windows 11 versions 26H2, 25H2, and 24H2, with OS builds 26300.9550, 26200.9550, and 26100.9550 respectively. Microsoft lists no affected Windows Server platform for this issue.

Microsoft’s release-health entry was opened on October 2, 2026 and marked “Confirmed.” As of October 4, it said a fix was in progress for a future Windows update; the reviewed official pages did not say that a fix had shipped.

How to check whether your PC and app match the notice

  1. Check your Windows version and build. Open Settings > System > About and review Windows specifications. Compare the edition and OS build with the affected releases listed above.
  2. Check update history. Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and look for KB5124010 or a later update. The KB number and release date help establish whether the PC received an update in the affected period.
  3. Note when the app fails. Record whether it crashes at startup or only when you play audio or use another sound feature. A crash tied to an AC-3 audio feature is consistent with Microsoft’s description, but does not by itself prove that this issue is the cause.
  4. Check the app’s audio dependency. Microsoft says legacy apps using Windows’ built-in decoder are more exposed than modern apps with their own decoder. Its public notice does not provide a diagnostic utility or a supported procedure for switching decoders.

What to do while Microsoft prepares a fix

Microsoft’s notice does not provide an AC-3-specific consumer workaround. It says: “Microsoft is working on releasing a resolution for this issue in a future Windows update.” Check the Windows release-health entry for a status change before changing update policy or attempting codec modifications.

Do not treat other workarounds shown on the KB5124010 page as fixes for this AC-3 issue. That page’s Known Issue Rollback and manual Explorer workaround concern a separate black-screen or desktop-loading problem. Its USB Audio Class 1.0 issue is also separate and originated with the September 8 security update.

What Microsoft has—and has not—established

Microsoft has confirmed the symptoms, the affected Windows client versions, and the update period associated with the issue. Its notice does not give an affected-user count, incidence rate, or complete list of applications that may fail. It also does not establish that every application using AC-3 will crash. The release-health page currently lists Windows Server as not affected.

For the update’s release date, preview designation, supported builds, and future-fix statement, see Microsoft’s KB5124010 support page. The live release-health entry is the better place to verify whether the confirmed status or fix availability has changed.
