Microsoft Brings OpenAI Technology to Office: What Microsoft 365 Copilot Does

Microsoft’s 2023 announcement put generative AI assistance inside Office. Here is what Microsoft 365 Copilot covers, how Microsoft described its use of work data, the historical launch terms and what the OpenAI partnership does not prove.

Microsoft’s March 2023 announcement introduced Copilot-style generative AI assistance inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams. The service Microsoft later called Microsoft 365 Copilot uses natural-language requests to help with work, while Microsoft 365 Chat can draw on an organization’s emails, meetings, chats, documents and the web. The announcement was part of a broader Microsoft–OpenAI partnership, but it does not mean that every Copilot capability is, or remains, powered by one specific OpenAI model.

What Microsoft announced in 2023

In March 2023, Microsoft presented Copilot as an AI assistant embedded in Office applications. Instead of opening a separate chatbot, a user could ask for help in ordinary language while working on a document, spreadsheet, presentation, email or team conversation.

Microsoft’s January 23, 2023 partnership announcement had already said that OpenAI models would be deployed across Microsoft’s consumer and enterprise products and that developers could access models through Azure OpenAI Service. That was the partnership’s 2023 framing; it should not be read as a description of every current cloud arrangement.

Microsoft WorkLab quoted chairman and CEO Satya Nadella describing the aim as “giving people more agency and making technology more accessible through the most universal interface—natural language.” Microsoft chief scientist and technical fellow Jaime Teevan said AI was “augmenting the way that I think.” Both are company-published statements about the product’s intended role, not independent measurements of its effectiveness.

Which Office apps Microsoft included

Microsoft’s September 21, 2023 product description named these applications and experiences:

App or experience What Microsoft described
Word Drafting and working with documents through natural-language instructions.
Excel Assistance with analyzing and working with spreadsheet data.
PowerPoint Creating presentation material, including turning a Word document into a presentation in Microsoft’s launch examples.
Outlook Help with email-related work.
Teams Assistance connected to team conversations and collaboration.
Microsoft 365 Chat A cross-workplace “hero experience” intended to work across emails, meetings, chats, documents and the web.

The table reflects Microsoft’s 2023 descriptions. It is not a promise that every listed feature has identical behavior, availability or model selection today.

How Microsoft said Copilot uses work information

Microsoft’s May 23, 2023 Build Book of News described Copilot as combining large language models with Microsoft Graph and Microsoft 365 application data. In practical terms, a request could be grounded in information already available to the user through the organization’s Microsoft 365 environment, rather than relying only on a generic chatbot prompt.

A Microsoft example

Microsoft gave the example of asking for a team status update assembled from meetings, emails and chats. This illustrates the intended workflow: the user asks for an outcome, Copilot finds relevant context that the user is authorized to access, and the result is presented for review in the relevant Microsoft 365 experience.

What this does not establish

  • It does not establish that Copilot can read every file or conversation in a company. Access permissions and Microsoft 365 configuration still govern what information is available.
  • It does not establish that an answer is correct. Generated text, summaries, formulas and presentations require human checking.
  • It does not identify the model used by every Copilot feature today. Microsoft’s descriptions explain the product architecture at a high level, not feature-by-feature model routing.

Availability and the launch price

On September 21, 2023, Microsoft announced that Microsoft 365 Copilot would become generally available to enterprise customers on November 1, 2023. The announced enterprise launch price was $30 per user per month.

Those are historical launch terms, not verified current pricing or eligibility. Microsoft 365 Copilot plans, regions, licensing requirements and included capabilities can change, so anyone purchasing the service should check Microsoft’s current commercial documentation rather than rely on the 2023 figure.

Microsoft and OpenAI after the launch

Partnership statements published by OpenAI in April 2026 and Microsoft in February 2026 describe the relationship as continuing. OpenAI’s 2026 account says Microsoft’s license to OpenAI intellectual property runs through 2032 and is non-exclusive. The statements provide partnership context, but they do not say which model currently powers each Microsoft 365 Copilot feature.

That distinction matters. Microsoft 365 Copilot is Microsoft’s product, even though Microsoft and OpenAI have a major technology partnership. A responsible description is that Microsoft built Copilot into its productivity services and has used large language models—including technology associated with its OpenAI relationship—alongside Microsoft Graph and Microsoft 365 data. It is not accurate to label every present-day Copilot response as coming from one named OpenAI chatbot model without feature-specific evidence.

What users should expect from an Office copilot

Useful tasks

  • Starting or restructuring a document from a plain-language brief.
  • Turning existing document material into a presentation draft.
  • Summarizing long email, meeting or chat context that the user can access.
  • Exploring spreadsheet information with natural-language questions.
  • Producing a first draft of a team update or other routine communication.

Necessary safeguards

  • Review names, dates, figures, citations and action items before sending or publishing generated content.
  • Check that the underlying files and conversations are current and that the summary has not omitted an important exception.
  • Apply the organization’s data-governance, retention and sharing policies to prompts and generated files.
  • Treat generated formulas, analysis and recommendations as drafts until a knowledgeable person verifies them.

What the announcement did—and did not—prove

The 2023 announcement proved Microsoft’s direction: natural-language AI assistance would be placed directly inside the Office workflow and connected to Microsoft 365 context. It did not, by itself, prove a specific productivity gain. Microsoft’s September 2023 material included usage figures about heavy users and cited Microsoft data, but those figures described usage context rather than a measured Copilot outcome. No named independent statistic establishes a general productivity improvement from Copilot in the evidence available for this article.

The enduring significance is the integration model: instead of asking users to copy workplace information into a separate chatbot, Microsoft positioned Copilot as an assistant operating within the applications, identity controls and data environment that organizations already use.
