Microsoft Authenticator restores from a backup, but the result depends on the phone platform and account type: some codes return, while work, school, and passwordless accounts require sign-in again. Before wiping your old phone, confirm which recovery method applies to each app and account.
How backup and recovery differ
| Question | Google Authenticator | Microsoft Authenticator |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud option | Sync codes to a Google Account after signing in, or use the app without an account to keep codes on the device. | Backup and restore depend on platform: Android uses Cloud Backup with a Microsoft personal account under the currently documented instructions; iOS backup depends on iCloud settings. |
| Manual transfer | Export codes from the old device as a QR code and import them on the new device. | The documented recovery route is restoring a backup, not the Google-style QR transfer flow. |
| Cross-platform restore | Syncing to the same Google Account can bring codes to a new supported device; manual transfer requires access to the old device. | Not supported between iOS and Android. Microsoft says backups can only be restored on the same device type. |
| What comes back | Synced codes return when you sign in to the same Google Account in Authenticator. Without sync, transfer them from the old device. | Third-party OTP codes and Microsoft personal accounts using only OTP can return as codes. Passwordless Microsoft personal accounts and work/school accounts require signing in again. |
These are the documented product recovery behaviors, not an independent comparison of security or a guarantee that every account can be recovered.

Google Authenticator: sync or transfer
Sync codes to a Google Account
Sign in to a Google Account in Authenticator to sync codes. Google lists Authenticator version 6.0 or later on Android and 4.0 or later on iOS for code sync in its Google Authenticator help article. After installing the app on a new device, sign in to the same Google Account to sync the codes. Google says codes are encrypted in transit and at rest.
If you use Authenticator without signing in, codes stay on the device rather than syncing to Google Accounts. Google describes both options in its instructions for getting verification codes. Authenticator can generate codes without an internet connection or mobile service, but that does not remove the need to transfer or sync them when changing phones.

Transfer codes with a QR code
Manual transfer is useful when you do not want to sync codes to a Google Account, but it depends on retaining the old phone and its codes. Keep both devices available until you verify the imported codes work.
- On the old phone, open Google Authenticator and use its transfer or export option to display the QR code for the accounts you want to move.
- On the new phone, open Google Authenticator and choose the import or scan option.
- Scan the QR code with the new device, then confirm the expected accounts and test sign-in to the relevant services before wiping or trading in the old phone.
Google’s manual transfer instructions require the current app and codes on the old device, as well as the new device. If the old phone is already unavailable and codes were not synced, use each service’s account-recovery process; the QR transfer cannot be completed from the new phone alone.

Microsoft Authenticator: restore depends on platform and account type
Use the same platform and backup account
Microsoft’s instructions require restoring on the same device type: an iOS backup cannot be restored on Android, or vice versa. Under the currently documented process, Android backup uses Cloud Backup and a Microsoft personal account; iOS backup depends on iCloud settings. Restore using the same personal Microsoft account used to create the backup. See Microsoft’s Authenticator backup instructions for current platform steps and labels.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAccess to that recovery account matters: Microsoft says its support agents cannot help restore credentials if you cannot access the backup account. Confirm you can sign in to it before relying on the backup.

Know which accounts will need sign-in again
- Third-party OTP accounts: Microsoft says their codes can be available after restore.
- Microsoft personal accounts that use only a one-time code: codes can return after restore.
- Passwordless Microsoft personal accounts: only the account name is backed up; sign in again to restore account access.
- Work or school accounts: only the account name is backed up; sign in again. Your organization’s sign-in requirements may also apply.
A restored account may show a sign-in or action-required state. Treat the backup as a way to restore eligible credentials, not as proof that every account is ready to use immediately.
Choose the right method for your new phone
- Switching between Android and iPhone with Google Authenticator: sign in to the same Google Account if code sync was enabled. If you use Authenticator without an account, use QR transfer while the old device is available.
- Switching between Android and iPhone with Microsoft Authenticator: the documented backup cannot cross platforms. Plan to sign in again to affected accounts and follow their individual recovery steps.
- Keeping the same platform with Microsoft Authenticator: confirm the relevant cloud or iCloud backup is enabled and that you can access the account used for recovery. Expect some accounts to require fresh sign-in.
- Replacing a phone before confirming backup: do not erase or trade in the old device until codes have synced or transferred and you have tested access. This is especially important for Google Authenticator without account sync and Microsoft accounts that need reauthentication.
Google Account backup codes are a separate fallback
Google Account backup codes help with the second step when you cannot use your usual 2-Step Verification method to sign in to that Google Account. They do not back up every third-party code stored in Google Authenticator. Each backup code works once, and generating a new set deactivates the old set. Google’s backup-code instructions also say that people enrolled in the Advanced Protection Program cannot download backup codes.

Keep the distinction clear: Authenticator sync or transfer moves verification codes for services configured to use the app; Google Account backup codes are a separate way to complete Google Account sign-in.

Future change to Microsoft Android backup
Microsoft’s backup page says that starting in January 2027, Android backup will use Microsoft Authenticator in Google One backup rather than a Microsoft personal account. That change is future-dated relative to this article’s October 2026 date and could be revised, so check Microsoft’s current instructions if setting up a backup on or after that date.
