Scott Jenson’s comments at KDE Akademy 2026 are a critique of Microsoft’s desktop priorities—not evidence that Microsoft has formally abandoned Windows. The “gave up on Windows” wording is Paul Thurrott’s interpretation of Jenson’s reported remarks, and the sources do not establish an abandonment decision or quantify a decline in Windows design work.
What prompted the “gave up on Windows” claim?
In a September 29, 2026 article, Paul Thurrott connected UX designer Scott Jenson’s criticism of Microsoft and Apple to the idea that both companies had “fundamentally given up on desktop computing.” The reported complaints include Microsoft’s use of OneDrive, Recall, and advertising. Those are Jenson’s criticisms as reported by Thurrott; they are not an independent assessment of Windows as a whole. Thurrott’s report does not document a Microsoft decision to end Windows development or prove that the company has abandoned the product.

What did Jenson say about his Microsoft interview?
Jenson recalled: “I interviewed there [at Microsoft] eight years ago to be the head of UX for Windows.” Because Thurrott’s article appeared in 2026, that would put the interview around 2018. Jenson said he had a plan for how the desktop could evolve, while recognizing that Windows had hundreds of millions of users and that sweeping change could alarm them. He added, “It’s not like I wanted to blow up Windows.”
The article does not say whether Microsoft made Jenson an offer, what interviewers thought of his proposal, or why the process ended. The “hundreds of millions” figure is part of Jenson’s recollection; the report provides no date or independent measurement for it.

What was the point of his Akademy talk?
Jenson’s talk at Akademy 2026 was titled “Are we really going to use the same Desktop UX forever?” Its official description argues that desktop interfaces have relied on legacy paradigms for more than two decades and that established companies such as Apple and Microsoft may be too entrenched to take radical risks. It points to richer input, better data flows, and alternatives to conventional two-dimensional window management as opportunities for innovation. The description presents Linux and KDE’s open-source nature as a setting in which designers can experiment. The event record lists the session on September 19, 2026, as a 40-minute talk.
LWN’s coverage similarly describes Jenson’s appeal to open-source projects to move beyond the familiar “windows, icons, menus, pointer” model. That framing makes the talk a broader argument about desktop design, not an announcement about Microsoft’s plans. LWN’s summary covers that open-source design challenge.

Did Microsoft give up on Windows?
The available material does not establish that it did. “Microsoft gave up on Windows” is an interpretation of reported criticism about the company’s approach to desktop computing. Neither Thurrott’s article nor the event materials document a formal abandonment of Windows, and they provide no named statistic measuring Microsoft’s commitment to the operating system or the overall state of desktop UX.
Akademy 2026 took place in Graz, Austria; the program scheduled talks for September 19 and 20, with community events continuing through September 24. KDE’s program announcement gives the conference details. Jenson’s argument is best understood as a challenge to keep evolving desktop interaction—and an invitation for open-source projects to explore ideas established vendors may avoid—not proof that Windows is being discontinued.
