Yes. Microsoft acquired Obsidian Entertainment, the role-playing game developer, in 2018. The deal was announced at Microsoft’s X018 event on November 10, 2018, initially as an intent to acquire the studio. Microsoft’s corporate acquisition history later lists Obsidian as an acquisition dated November 10, 2018. Obsidian joined Microsoft’s game-studio organization, then called Microsoft Studios and renamed Xbox Game Studios in 2019.
What exactly happened?
Microsoft announced its planned acquisition of Obsidian Entertainment on November 10, 2018, during X018. The same announcement covered inXile Entertainment, but the companies did not become one combined developer. Microsoft said both studios would retain their own teams, intellectual property and expertise while operating autonomously.

The announcement used the legally cautious wording “intent to acquire.” Microsoft’s later acquisition history records Obsidian as acquired on that date, so describing the transaction only as a rumor or an uncompleted plan is misleading. No purchase price is disclosed in those authoritative sources.

Who is Obsidian Entertainment?
Microsoft described Obsidian as an RPG developer founded in 2003 in Irvine, California, by veterans of Black Isle Studios and led by Feargus Urquhart. Its reputation before the acquisition rested on narrative-heavy role-playing games and world-building.
Microsoft’s announcement highlighted Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, Fallout: New Vegas, South Park: The Stick of Truth and Pillars of Eternity. These are examples of the studio’s work, not a complete catalog.
Why did Microsoft want Obsidian?
Microsoft’s stated rationale centered on Obsidian’s creative identity, RPG expertise, world-building ability and experience developing for PC. The company said the studio would receive Microsoft’s support while retaining the autonomy and creative freedom to pursue its ambitions.

- First-party expansion: Obsidian added an established RPG specialist to Microsoft’s growing internal development organization.
- Platform content: Microsoft described the acquisition as a way to create new content for its platforms and services, including Xbox Game Pass.
- Creative capability: Obsidian brought a recognizable style and experienced RPG leadership rather than simply adding another general-purpose team.
It is reasonable to interpret the purchase as strengthening Microsoft’s first-party RPG portfolio and subscription strategy, but those are analytical conclusions. The announcement describes intended benefits, not proof of later commercial performance or a guaranteed creative plan.

Did Microsoft merge Obsidian with another studio?
No. Obsidian remained a distinct development studio. Although it was announced alongside inXile, Microsoft said the two teams would operate autonomously with their own talent, intellectual property and expertise. There is no basis in the cited announcements for describing Obsidian as absorbed into inXile or another developer.
Microsoft Studios became Xbox Game Studios
At the time of the 2018 announcement, Obsidian joined Microsoft Studios. On February 5, 2019, Microsoft announced the organization’s new name, Xbox Game Studios, and included Obsidian among its studios. The rename changed the branding of the group, not Obsidian’s identity as a separate team. See Microsoft’s Xbox Wire announcement.
Did the acquisition make every Obsidian game Xbox-exclusive?
No. Ownership, first-party status, console exclusivity, PC availability and Game Pass inclusion are separate questions.

New projects
Microsoft’s 2018 announcement discussed creating exclusive games and new content for Microsoft platforms, but it did not establish a universal rule that every future Obsidian title would be Xbox-console-only. Each project must be assessed on its own release announcement.
Xbox does not mean console-only
Microsoft’s first-party ecosystem includes Xbox consoles and Windows PC. Therefore, an Xbox first-party release can be available on PC without being available on competing consoles. A Game Pass listing is also a distribution decision, not a definition of ownership or exclusivity.
What did Xbox Game Pass have to do with the deal?
Microsoft explicitly connected its studio strategy with services such as Xbox Game Pass. In January 2018, Microsoft said new Xbox One exclusive games from Microsoft Studios would be added to Game Pass on their global release date, as described in the Windows Experience Blog.

That history helps explain the strategic logic: owning more studios could give Microsoft a steadier supply of first-party games for its console, PC and subscription ecosystem. It does not prove that Game Pass was the sole reason for buying Obsidian, nor does the 2018 policy establish the terms of every current plan or future release.

What changed for Obsidian and players?
More first-party backing
Becoming part of Microsoft gave Obsidian access to a larger corporate platform for financing, technology, distribution and services. The announcement simultaneously promised autonomy, so the documented change was ownership and support rather than a stated mandate to abandon Obsidian’s RPG identity.
A clearer route to Xbox and PC audiences
Obsidian became part of Microsoft’s first-party portfolio, making Xbox and Windows important destinations for its new projects. That still does not determine the availability of every older title or rule out other platforms where contracts or publishing strategy allow them.
Game Pass access varies by title and plan
Players considering Game Pass should check the current catalog and plan terms at the official Xbox Game Pass page. Catalog availability, plan names, pricing and day-one policies can change. A subscription can suit someone who wants to play several eligible games, while buying a game individually is better for permanent access to a particular title.
Common misconceptions
- “It was only a rumor.” The announcement began as an intent to acquire, but Microsoft’s acquisition history records Obsidian as acquired.
- “Obsidian and inXile became one studio.” They were announced together and remained separate teams.
- “Every Obsidian game became Xbox-exclusive.” The acquisition alone does not establish that policy.
- “Microsoft bought Obsidian to make Fallout: New Vegas 2.” The cited sources do not make that promise.
- “The purchase price is public.” No price appears in the authoritative sources cited here.

Is Obsidian still an independent studio?
Obsidian is a Microsoft-owned first-party studio, but it remains a distinct team rather than being merged into another developer.
Are Obsidian games available through Xbox Game Pass?
Eligibility depends on the individual game and the current catalog and plan terms. Check the official Xbox Game Pass listing for the title you want.
The Bottom Line
Microsoft’s Obsidian deal was real: announced on November 10, 2018, recorded by Microsoft as an acquisition, and followed by Obsidian joining Xbox Game Studios. The studio kept its own identity, while Microsoft gained an experienced RPG developer for its first-party and Game Pass strategy. The acquisition does not, by itself, make every Obsidian game Xbox-exclusive or guarantee any particular future franchise.
