If a Microsoft account passkey will not sign you in on Windows, first find out where that passkey is stored: Windows Hello, a phone, a security key, or a synced credential manager. Then check the device screen lock, browser and Windows support, and—if you are signing in with a phone—the Bluetooth and internet connection on both devices. A work or school account may also be restricted by your organization.
Start with the error and account type
Note the exact message and whether you are signing in to a personal Microsoft account or a work or school account. The message helps narrow down which part of the sign-in flow needs attention:

- “No passkeys available” or a missing passkey: check the device or provider where it was saved.
- “This passkey can no longer be used”: the credential may have been deleted or may no longer match a changed authentication method.
- “Something went wrong” or “We couldn’t use your device to verify your identity”: check device unlock, browser support, and cross-device requirements.
- A missing QR code: confirm you chose the option to use a passkey on another device and that your browser and sign-in flow support it.
- “External security key not found”: reconnect the physical key and respond to the prompt promptly.
For a work or school account, check with your organization if the passkey option is missing or blocked. Administrators can limit which passkey methods are allowed.

Check the Windows device and browser
Make sure the device has a screen lock
Passkeys use the device’s secure unlock method, such as a PIN, face recognition, or fingerprint. Microsoft says synced passkeys may not appear if the device’s screen lock is disabled. Enable a screen lock and try signing in again.

Confirm Windows and browser support
Microsoft lists Windows 10 and newer as supported for passkeys, but says the latest passkey features require Windows 11. So a missing newer option does not by itself mean passkeys are unsupported on Windows 10. Microsoft lists Microsoft Edge 109 or newer, Chrome 109 or newer, and Safari 16 or newer as supported browsers. Microsoft Password Manager is available in Edge 142 or newer when using a personal profile. See Microsoft’s device and browser requirements.
If an option is missing, update Windows and the browser where possible. On an organization-managed PC, policy may limit available features even when the device and browser meet the listed requirements.

Check where the passkey is saved
A passkey may be stored locally on the Windows PC, synced through a credential manager, saved on a phone, or held by a physical security key. The Windows sign-in screen cannot use a passkey that is missing from the selected storage provider.

| Storage location | Where to check or manage it | Portability and recovery consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Windows device using Windows Hello | Settings > Accounts > Passkeys | A device-bound passkey stays on the device where it was created. Losing that device can mean losing the credential unless you have another sign-in or recovery method. |
| Synced credential manager | Manage the passkey through the provider that saved it | Synced passkeys may be available on multiple devices through that provider. |
| Phone | Check the phone’s passkey provider and use the “other device” sign-in flow on the PC | Cross-device use requires nearby devices, Bluetooth, and internet connectivity. |
| External security key | Connect the key when prompted by the sign-in flow | This is a physical authenticator; it does not repair a missing or unsupported passkey stored elsewhere. |
For Windows-local credentials, Microsoft provides advanced settings at Settings > Accounts > Passkeys > Advanced options. An administrator may disable passkey-service settings on a managed device. Microsoft explains the Windows passkey controls in its Windows passkey management guidance.

For a personal Microsoft account, manage account passkeys through the relevant Microsoft account security dashboard. If you use a credential manager, check its own account or passkey settings instead. Adding duplicate entries repeatedly is unlikely to help: Microsoft notes that a credential manager generally supports one passkey per website, app, or service.
Fix a passkey saved on a phone or another device
When you choose to sign in with a passkey on another device, the phone and PC must be near each other, Bluetooth must be enabled on both, and both devices must have internet access. They do not have to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Follow Microsoft’s cross-device passkey troubleshooting steps if the phone is not detected or the QR-code flow does not work.

- WINDOWS HELLO LOGIN FOR WINDOWS 10/11 — NOT FOR MAC - Only works with Windows Hello on Windows 10/11 PCs and laptops. Plug the USB fingerprint reader into your computer and sign in with one touch. Not compatible with Mac, macOS, Linux, or Chrome OS. Requires Windows Hello PIN setup first for fingerprint enrollment.
- PLUG-AND-PLAY, NO DRIVERS NEEDED - No extra app or driver needed on most genuine Windows 10/11 systems. Insert the USB fingerprint scanner, go to Windows Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options, and set up fingerprint sign-in. Works with desktops, laptops, and shared computers without built-in sensors
- FAST 0.5S 360° CAPACITIVE RECOGNITION - Capacitive fingerprint technology delivers quick authentication in about 0.5 seconds. 360° touch recognition reads your fingerprint from different angles. Compared to optical sensors, capacitive sensors are more accurate and less prone to misreads—ideal for shared PCs.
- MULTI-USER & SMART-ID SECURITY - Supports multiple Windows accounts and up to 10 fingerprints per account. Smart-ID security helps protect saved passwords and encrypted folders with fingerprint access. Compatible with most Windows 10/11 laptops and desktops, including Dell, HP, Lenovo, and ASUS. For USB-C only laptops, a USB-A to USB-C adapter is required (not included). 1-year warranty.
- IMPORTANT NOTES — PLEASE READ BEFORE PURCHASE - Supports Win10/11 32/64-bit original system. Not for streamlined/Lite versions (biometric component removed).Only supports Windows Hello. Does not encrypt USB drives/files. Windows only — not for Mac.Prefer motherboard USB 2.0 port. USB 3.0 hubs/docking stations may cause unstable recognition.
- Turn on Bluetooth on both the Windows PC and the phone.
- Confirm that both devices are connected to the internet and keep them nearby.
- Choose the sign-in option for using a passkey from another device, then follow the on-screen QR or confirmation steps.
- If this is a work or school account, check whether your organization allows cross-device authentication.
If the passkey was saved in a credential manager, make sure the sign-in flow is using that provider and that its passkey is available on the phone. A passkey stored only in Windows Hello will not automatically be available from a phone.
Recover a missing, deleted, or invalid passkey
If the sign-in page says no passkey is available or that the passkey can no longer be used, first try another sign-in method offered for your account. Once you regain access, create a replacement passkey before deleting old entries. Then check the storage provider for obsolete copies and remove only passkeys that no longer apply.

- For the driver download and user guide, please visit TrustKey Home support page.
A passkey might be absent because it is stored with a different provider, was deleted, or no longer matches a changed authentication method. Check Windows Settings for local passkeys and the relevant phone or credential manager for synced or device-stored credentials.
Troubleshoot an external security key
If you chose a FIDO2-compatible physical security key and Windows reports that it cannot find or use it, unplug the key and reinsert it when prompted. Respond promptly to the sign-in request. A security key is an alternative authenticator; it will not fix an unsupported browser, a disabled screen lock, a deleted passkey, or an organizational restriction. Microsoft lists FIDO2 security keys among supported passkey devices.
Work or school accounts may have different limits
Passkey creation and sign-in for an organization-managed account depend on the policies set by the organization. Policies can limit where a passkey may be saved, prevent cross-device authentication, or disable Windows passkey-service options.
On Android, Microsoft says a work-account passkey created through the camera or an authenticator app in a personal profile may need to be recreated in the work profile. If the passkey option remains unavailable, ask your organization’s administrator which methods are permitted rather than following a personal-account setup as if it applied universally.
When to use Microsoft’s sign-in helper
If you cannot access the account with a passkey or another offered sign-in method, use Microsoft’s sign-in helper. It is the next step when the issue is account access rather than a setting you can correct on the Windows device.
