There is no universal winner. Microsoft 365 Copilot is usually the closer fit for work already centered on Microsoft 365 apps and company content stored in Microsoft Graph. ChatGPT Business or Enterprise is a better candidate when a team wants a shared AI workspace spanning ChatGPT capabilities and connected services. Choose by testing the work your staff actually do, not by assuming one assistant is better at every task.
How the two tools fit workplace tasks
| Decision area | Microsoft 365 Copilot | ChatGPT Business or Enterprise |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Microsoft 365-centered work, with assistance in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams subject to license and availability. | A shared AI workspace with ChatGPT capabilities, apps or connectors, and Company Knowledge; features vary by plan. |
| Work context | Uses Microsoft Graph work context and connectors to ground assistance in Microsoft 365 data. | Lists connections to services including Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub, and Microsoft 365, as well as Company Knowledge. Confirm connector access, permissions, and availability for the plan. |
| Administration and controls | Review Microsoft 365 licensing, tenant permissions, information protection and compliance settings, and any metered agent usage relevant to the selected plan. | Business lists SAML SSO, MFA, central administration, analytics, and spend controls. Enterprise adds controls including SCIM, EKM, user analytics, and role-based access controls. |
When Microsoft 365 Copilot is the better fit
Copilot is the natural candidate when employees spend much of their day in Microsoft 365 and need assistance grounded in the work data they can access there. Its differentiator is the combination of in-app assistance and Microsoft Graph context, rather than simply access to a general-purpose chatbot.

That fit depends on licensing and configuration: the relevant apps and capabilities can vary by license and availability, and a qualifying Microsoft 365 plan is required for the enterprise add-on. Existing permissions also matter. If company files or messages are overshared or incorrectly permissioned, an assistant grounded in that content can make the access problem more visible; review governance before deployment.

When ChatGPT Business or Enterprise is the better fit
ChatGPT Business is designed as a shared team workspace. It may suit teams that want ChatGPT capabilities alongside connected services and company knowledge, particularly when work is distributed across several platforms rather than concentrated in Microsoft 365. Enterprise offers additional plan-specific enterprise controls and custom pricing.

Do not assume a listed connector is automatically available to every plan or can access every relevant item. Validate the exact connector, permissions, data handling, and plan availability with administrators before relying on it for company workflows.
Compare the full cost, not just the headline price
These figures are snapshots from official U.S. and OpenAI pricing pages, not a like-for-like total cost comparison. Check current terms for the buyer’s region, subscription, and purchase date.
Rank #2
| Offering | Published price snapshot | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Copilot, U.S. enterprise page | $30 per user per month, billed yearly | Requires a separate qualifying Microsoft 365 plan. Microsoft’s business offers and regional terms differ; consult the enterprise pricing page and business pricing page for current terms. |
| ChatGPT Business Standard | $20 per user per month with annual billing, or $25 per user per month billed monthly | Business workspace requires at least two paid seats; Business does not include API usage. See OpenAI’s Business pricing and Business FAQ. |
| ChatGPT Business Premium | $100 per user per month as the annual-billing monthly equivalent, or $125 per user per month billed monthly | Plan terms and included capabilities should be checked on the pricing page before purchase. |
| ChatGPT Enterprise | Custom pricing | Contact OpenAI for terms and confirm which enterprise controls are included in the proposed configuration. |
Microsoft licensing context can affect what a user is entitled to beyond the Copilot add-on. Microsoft Learn’s comparison of E3, E5, and E7 was updated June 30, 2026, and says E7 became generally available May 1, 2026; treat bundle and entitlement conclusions as specific to the license. See Microsoft’s license comparison.

Security and data handling need a plan-specific review
Microsoft describes Copilot’s use of Microsoft Graph work context and enterprise data protection and compliance controls. What that means in practice depends on the tenant’s permissions and governance configuration; the existence of vendor controls does not establish that a particular deployment is correctly configured.
Rank #3
OpenAI says ChatGPT Business and Enterprise workspace data is not used to train its models by default, and documents encryption in transit and at rest. It describes configurable retention for qualifying organizations and plan-specific controls such as Enterprise Key Management for eligible configurations. Data sent through third-party apps may also be subject to those services’ terms. See OpenAI’s business data privacy, security, and compliance information.
Both vendors’ statements are starting points, not proof that the products have identical controls or that either meets your organization’s obligations. Review the exact contract and plan for retention, residency options, connector data handling, access management, audit requirements, and applicable regulation before approving use.

A short, controlled pilot is more useful than a general claim about which assistant is smarter. Test both products on the same representative tasks, using the same prompts, files, and acceptance criteria wherever possible.

- Choose realistic tasks: include drafting and revising a document, analyzing a spreadsheet, preparing work from meeting or email context, and answering a question over approved internal material.
- Confirm approved access: make sure each product can reach the intended sources under the permissions and configuration your organization would actually use. Do not upload sensitive material until the product configuration and data-handling terms are approved.
- Score the results: assess correctness, source traceability, editing effort, relevant data access, latency, policy fit, and all-in license and usage costs.
- Decide by team and workflow: weigh the result against the apps employees use, administrative overhead, and governance requirements rather than declaring a universal winner.
The official materials cited here do not establish a general comparative performance winner or a topic-specific independent workplace productivity statistic. Results from your own representative tasks are therefore the sounder basis for a purchase decision.
