Microsoft 365 Basic: $2 for 100GB OneDrive, Outlook Web, But No Office Apps

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft 365 Basic is Microsoft’s entry-level paid plan, priced at $2 per month or $19.99 per year. Its main appeal is simple: you get 100GB of OneDrive cloud storage, an ad-free Outlook web experience, and a few extra security and support benefits without paying for the full Microsoft 365 Personal or Family plans.

The tradeoff is just as clear: Microsoft 365 Basic does not include the desktop Office apps. If you need full installed versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook, this plan will not cover that. Instead, it sits between a free Microsoft account and the more expensive Microsoft 365 tiers, aimed at people who mostly need more cloud storage and a cleaner webmail experience.

What Microsoft 365 Basic Includes for $2 per Month

Microsoft 365 Basic is the lowest-cost paid Microsoft 365 plan for consumers, priced at $1.99 per month in the United States, often rounded to “$2/month.” Its main purpose is simple: it gives an individual Microsoft account more cloud storage and a few paid account benefits without bundling the full desktop Office apps. If you mainly want a bigger OneDrive allowance, use Outlook.com in a browser, and do not need installed versions of Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, this is the plan Microsoft positions below Microsoft 365 Personal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The headline feature is 100GB of OneDrive cloud storage. That storage is tied to one Microsoft account and can be used for files, photos, phone camera backups, document syncing, and attachments saved from Outlook. It is a major increase over the free Microsoft account allowance, which is limited to a small amount of OneDrive storage. For someone who has outgrown the free tier but does not need 1TB, 100GB can cover years of documents, PDFs, spreadsheets, school files, and a moderate photo collection.

Microsoft 365 Basic also includes access to Microsoft’s web and mobile Office apps, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Onein a browser or on supported mobile devices. These are not the same as the full desktop apps included with higher tiers, but they are useful for creating and editing everyday documents online. You can open a Word document stored in OneDrive, make quick edits in the browser, collaborate with someone else, or review a spreadsheet without installing Office on a PC or Mac.

For email, the plan works with Outlook on the web and the Outlook mobile app for your Microsoft email address, such as Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live, or MSN. Microsoft advertises Basic with improved security features for Outlook.com, including phishing and malware protection, and it removes ads from Outlook.com compared with the free experience. That makes the inbox feel cleaner if you spend a lot of time in webmail, although it still does not turn the plan into a business email package with a custom domain or admin controls.

Core features included

  • 100GB OneDrive storage for one person, usable across devices signed in to the same Microsoft account.
  • Outlook.com benefits, including an ad-free webmail experience and added email security protections.
  • Web and mobile access to Microsoft 365 apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.
  • File syncing and sharing through OneDrive, including links for sharing documents, folders, and photos.
  • Microsoft support access for help with Microsoft 365 and Windows-related account issues, depending on region and support channel availability.

The most significant limitation is what Microsoft 365 Basic does not include. You do not get the full installed desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher, or Access. On a Windows PC or Mac, you will be using the browser-based apps unless you already own Office separately. That distinction matters if you rely on advanced Excel features, complex formatting in Word, offline editing for long periods, mail merge, macros, or the desktop Outlook client.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practical terms, Microsoft 365 Basic is a storage-and-email upgrade, not a complete productivity suite. It sits between a free Microsoft account and the more expensive Microsoft 365 Personal plan. For $2 per month, you are mostly paying to expand OneDrive from the free allowance to 100GB and to make Outlook.com more comfortable to use, while accepting that the premium desktop Office apps remain outside the package.

100GB OneDrive Storage: Who It’s Enough For

The main upgrade in Microsoft 365 Basic is the jump from the free Microsoft account’s small OneDrive allowance to 100GB of cloud storage. For many people, that is the difference between using OneDrive only for a few documents and relying on it as a practical backup and sync space for everyday files. It gives you room for work documents, PDFs, school files, phone photos, scanned paperwork, and shared folders without immediately pushing you toward a more expensive Microsoft 365 Personal or Family plan.

In real-world terms, 100GB is generous for document-heavy use. Word files, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, PDFs, receipts, tax forms, resumes, and s usually take up relatively little space. If your cloud storage is mostly made of office documents and a moderate number of images, 100GB can last a long time. It is also enough for keeping important folders synced across a Windows PC, the OneDrive mobile app, and the web, so you can access files from multiple devices without carrying them manually on a USB drive.

Good fits for 100GB of OneDrive storage

  • Students who need to store assignments, lecture slides, research PDFs, and a limited set of photos or videos.
  • Home users who want a simple place for personal documents, household records, IDs, insurance files, and scanned paperwork.
  • Light photo backup users who want to save selected phone photos rather than an entire multi-year camera roll in original quality.
  • Freelancers or side-gig workers who manage invoices, contracts, client documents, and small project folders.
  • Windows users who want Desktop, Documents, or Pictures folder backup but do not have a large media library.

Where 100GB starts to feel tight is media storage. Modern phone photos can consume space quickly, and 4K videos can use several gigabytes each. If you want to back up every photo and video from a phone, store large design files, keep raw camera images, or maintain a big archive of downloaded media, 100GB may become a short-term stopgap rather than a long-term solution. In that case, the 1TB included with Microsoft 365 Personal is a much better fit.

OneDrive’s value is not only the capacity. It also gives you file syncing, web access, mobile access, sharing links, and integration with Windows and Microsoft’s web apps. You can save a file on one device and pick it up from another, share a folder with family or coworkers, and recover from a lost laptop more easily if your key files were already synced. For someone currently juggling files across email attachments, local folders, and phone storage, the 100GB plan can make file management much cleaner.

Microsoft 365 Basic is most worth considering when your storage needs are clearly above the free tier but nowhere near 1TB. If you mostly need a dependable cloud locker for documents and a moderate amount of personal data, 100GB is a sensible middle ground. If your goal is full-device photo and video backup, large creative projects, or long-term storage for mulle people, it is better to look at Microsoft 365 Personal or Family instead.

Outlook Web Benefits and Email Features

Microsoft 365 Basic improves the Outlook.com experience mainly by removing ads from Outlook on the web and giving you more room to work with email. You still use Outlook through a browser, or through supported mobile mail apps, rather than getting the full desktop Outlook app that comes with higher Microsoft 365 plans. For many personal users, that is enough: the web version includes a modern inbox, calendar, contacts, search, rules, folders, categories, and integration with OneDrive attachments.

The biggest practical upgrade over a free Microsoft account is the ad-free Outlook web inbox. Free Outlook.com accounts typically show advertising in the web interface, which can make the inbox feel more cluttered, especially on smaller laptop screens. With Microsoft 365 Basic, the interface is cleaner and more focused. This matters if you use Outlook.com as your primary personal email account, check mail throughout the day, or prefer the browser version instead of installing a separate mail client.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft 365 Basic also includes a larger mailbox than the free tier. A free Outlook.com account commonly includes 15GB of mailbox storage, while Microsoft 365 Basic raises that mailbox capacity to 50GB. That is separate from the 100GB OneDrive storage included with the plan. The extra mailbox space is useful if you keep years of receipts, travel confirmations, school messages, newsletters, and photo-heavy attachments instead of deleting or archiving aggressively.

Useful Outlook web features included

  • Ad-free Outlook.com: a cleaner webmail interface without banner-style ads in the mailbox view.
  • 50GB mailbox: more space for saved messages and attachments compared with a free Microsoft account.
  • Calendar and contacts: built-in scheduling, reminders, people management, and syncing across signed-in devices.
  • Rules and folders: tools for sorting newsletters, receipts, work-related messages, and family emails automatically.
  • Focused Inbox and filtering: helps separate higher-priority messages from less urgent mail when enabled.
  • OneDrive attachment handling: send links to files stored in OneDrive instead of attaching large files directly.

The OneDrive connection is especially convenient. If a file is too large or you want to avoid sending mulle versions of the same document, you can upload it to OneDrive and share a link from Outlook. With the 100GB OneDrive allowance in Microsoft 365 Basic, this becomes more practical than it is on the free 5GB storage tier. It is a simple setup for sending family photos, PDFs, scanned forms, school documents, or project files without needing a separate cloud storage service.

There are limits to keep in mind. Microsoft 365 Basic does not turn Outlook web into the full Outlook desktop app, and it does not include advanced desktop features tied to the Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscriptions. If you need offline-heavy email management in the classic Outlook desktop environment, mulle professional mailbox workflows, or the full installed Office suite alongside Outlook, Basic will feel limited. But if your main complaint with free Outlook.com is ads, tight mailbox space, and minimal cloud storage, the Basic plan addresses those pain points at a low monthly price.

What You Don’t Get: No Word, Excel, or PowerPoint Desktop Apps

Microsoft 365 Basic does not include the full desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, One, Publisher, or Access. The $2-per-month plan is mainly a storage and email upgrade, not an Office apps subscription. If you want to install Word on a Windows PC or Mac, open Excel workbooks locally with the full feature set, or create PowerPoint decks in the desktop app, Microsoft 365 Basic will not cover that.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can still use the web versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with a Microsoft account, but those browser-based apps are more limited than the installed desktop programs. They are fine for basic writing, simple spreadsheets, light formatting, and quick edits to files stored in OneDrive. For example, you can create a document in Word for the web, share it with someone, and make edits in your browser. You can also open a spreadsheet in Excel for the web and adjust formulas, tables, and charts for everyday use.

Common desktop features missing from Microsoft 365 Basic

  • No installable Word, Excel, or PowerPoint apps for Windows or macOS.
  • No full desktop Outlook app for managing mail, calendars, contacts, and multiple accounts locally.
  • No offline Office editing in the full applications when you are away from an internet connection.
  • No advanced Excel desktop tools such as some data analysis, automation, add-in, and complex workbook features.
  • No full PowerPoint desktop workflow for advanced presentation design, media handling, and presenter tools.
  • No Publisher or Access, which are available only on some Windows-based Microsoft 365 plans.

This distinction matters if you regularly work with complex documents or need dependable offline access. A student who only writes short papers in a browser may be comfortable with Microsoft 365 Basic. A freelancer who edits large Word documents with tracked changes, custom styles, and client templates may find the web app restrictive. The same applies to anyone managing large Excel files, advanced formulas, macros, PivotTables, external data connections, or polished PowerPoint presentations for work.

Microsoft 365 Basic also does not turn your computer into a fully licensed Office workstation. If you already have a one-time purchase of Office, such as Office Home & Student, those installed apps remain separate from the Basic subscription. Basic adds the 100GB OneDrive allowance and extra Outlook web benefits, but it does not upgrade older desktop apps or unlock premium Office desktop features.

If the desktop apps are central to your workflow, Microsoft 365 Personal or Microsoft 365 Family is the more appropriate tier. Those plans include installable Office apps along with much larger OneDrive storage. Microsoft 365 Basic makes more sense when your main problem is the free account’s small cloud storage limit and you are comfortable handling documents through Office for the web.

Microsoft 365 Basic vs Free Microsoft Account

A free Microsoft account already gives you access to OneDrive, Outlook.com, Microsoft To Do, Oneon the web, and the web versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. For light use, that can be enough: you can store a small set of files, send and receive email through Outlook.com, and edit documents in a browser without paying anything. Microsoft 365 Basic keeps that same general experience but raises the storage ceiling and adds a few account and email benefits for a low monthly price.

Feature Free Microsoft Account Microsoft 365 Basic
OneDrive storage 5GB 100GB
Outlook.com email storage 15GB mailbox storage Same mailbox storage, plus added Outlook.com benefits
Word, Excel, PowerPoint web apps Included Included
Desktop Office apps Not included Not included
Microsoft support Limited self-service help Access to Microsoft support for Microsoft 365 and Windows 11

The biggest practical difference is OneDrive. A free account’s 5GB fills quickly once you enable phone photo uploads, sync a desktop folder, or save PDFs, school files, tax documents, and scanned paperwork. Microsoft 365 Basic’s 100GB is a much more comfortable allowance for one person who wants cloud backup without moving into a full productivity subscription. It is still not designed for large video libraries or full-computer backups, but it can handle everyday documents, thousands of photos, and shared folders far better than the free tier.

For email, the free Outlook.com experience is usable, but Microsoft 365 Basic is aimed at people who rely on that inbox more seriously. The plan includes added Outlook.com protections and fewer distractions compared with the standard free experience. You still use Outlook on the web or the Outlook mobile app rather than getting the paid desktop Outlook application included with higher Microsoft 365 plans. If your main complaint is running out of OneDrive space or wanting a cleaner, more polished Outlook.com account, Basic is the direct upgrade.

The free account remains the better choice if you only need occasional document editing, keep most files on your device, and do not use OneDrive as a regular backup location. It also makes sense if you prefer Google Drive, iCloud, Dropbox, or another service for storage and only keep a Microsoft account for signing in to Windows or accessing shared Office files. Paying for Basic is most sensible when you already like Microsoft’s ecosystem but keep hitting the limits of the free account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Stay free if 5GB of OneDrive storage is enough and you only use Office web apps occasionally.
  • Choose Microsoft 365 Basic if you want 100GB of OneDrive storage and better Outlook.com features without paying for desktop Office apps.
  • Skip both for a higher tier if you need installed Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, or 1TB of cloud storage.

Microsoft 365 Basic vs Personal and Family Plans

Microsoft 365 Basic sits at the low end of Microsoft’s paid consumer lineup. It costs about $2 per month or $19.99 per year and is mainly a storage-and-email upgrade over a free Microsoft account. Microsoft 365 Personal and Microsoft 365 Family cost more, but they change the value proposition: instead of paying mostly for extra OneDrive space and Outlook web features, you are paying for the full Office app suite, much larger cloud storage, and stronger household coverage.

Plan Typical price OneDrive storage Office desktop apps Best fit
Microsoft 365 Basic About $2/month or $19.99/year 100GB for one person No Light cloud storage and Outlook web users
Microsoft 365 Personal About $6.99/month or $69.99/year 1TB for one person Yes One user who wants Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and more storage
Microsoft 365 Family About $9.99/month or $99.99/year Up to 6TB total, 1TB per person for up to six people Yes Households sharing Microsoft 365 across several users

The biggest practical difference is access to the installed Office apps. With Microsoft 365 Personal and Family, you can use the full desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and One on supported Windows PCs and Macs, along with mobile apps on phones and tablets. Microsoft 365 Basic does not include those desktop apps. You can still use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for the web, but that is not the same as having the full local applications, especially if you work with advanced formatting, large spreadsheets, macros, offline files, or business templates.

Storage is the second major gap. Basic gives you 100GB of OneDrive storage, which is a solid step up from the free allowance and enough for many documents, PDFs, school files, and a moderate photo library. Personal increases that to 1TB for one person, which is far better for large photo collections, phone backups, videos, scans, and long-term file archives. Family can be the better deal if two or more people need storage, because each person gets their own separate 1TB allowance under the same subscription.

There are also support and security differences that may matter depending on how you use Microsoft services. Basic includes Microsoft’s ad-free Outlook web experience and added mailbox features compared with a free account, plus access to Microsoft support for account and subscription issues. Personal and Family go further by bundling the premium app experience and typically giving more value to anyone who creates documents regularly. If you only need more cloud space and a cleaner Outlook web inbox, Basic is the cheaper and more focused option. If you would otherwise buy Office, need 1TB of storage, or want installed apps across your devices, Personal is usually the more complete single-user plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For households, Microsoft 365 Family is often the easiest plan to justify. If three, four, or more people need their own OneDrive storage and Office apps, the per-person cost drops sharply compared with buying separate Personal subscriptions. Basic makes more sense when only one person has a small storage problem to solve and does not care about desktop Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. In short, Basic is a narrow upgrade; Personal and Family are full productivity subscriptions.

Who Should Consider Microsoft 365 Basic

Microsoft 365 Basic makes the most sense for people who mainly need more cloud storage and a better web-based email setup, not the full Office app suite. At about $2 per month, it sits in a narrow but useful middle ground: cheaper than Microsoft 365 Personal, more capable than a free Microsoft account, and simple enough for users who do not want to manage a larger subscription. If your main frustration is running out of OneDrive space or having a limited Outlook.com inbox, Basic is worth a close look.

Good fits for Microsoft 365 Basic

  • Light OneDrive users: If you store phone photos, PDFs, school files, resumes, tax documents, and a modest set of work files, 100GB can be plenty. It is a practical upgrade from the small storage allowance included with a free Microsoft account.
  • People who use Office in a browser: If Word for the web, Excel for the web, and PowerPoint for the web already cover your needs, Basic lets you keep working online without paying for desktop apps you will not install.
  • Outlook.com users who want fewer limits: Basic is a sensible step up for anyone who relies on Outlook on the web for personal email and wants a more polished experience, including Microsoft’s added mailbox and security features tied to the plan.
  • Students with simple file needs: A student who mostly writes papers in the browser, saves PDFs, stores notes, and syncs files between a laptop and phone may find Basic enough, especially if their school already provides Office apps separately.
  • Budget-conscious users: If the price of Microsoft 365 Personal feels too high because you do not need 1TB of storage or installed Office apps, Basic offers a lower monthly commitment.

Basic is also a good match for people who already live inside Microsoft’s ecosystem but do not create complex documents. For example, someone using Windows, OneDrive folder backup, Outlook.com, Microsoft Edge, and the mobile OneDrive app may get clear value from the added storage alone. The plan can also work well as a digital filing cabinet for household records, scanned paperwork, warranties, invoices, and shared folders, as long as your total storage needs stay comfortably under 100GB.

On the other hand, Microsoft 365 Basic is not the right choice if you regularly edit large spreadsheets, need advanced Word formatting tools, work offline for long stretches, or want the full desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. It is also not ideal for families who need separate storage for mulle people, since Microsoft 365 Family provides far more value when several users are involved. Anyone with a large photo library, video collection, or years of cloud backups may outgrow 100GB quickly and should compare the cost against a 1TB plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A simple way to decide is to check your current storage use and your app habits. If you are below 50GB today, expect moderate growth, and are comfortable using Office through a browser, Microsoft 365 Basic is a low-cost upgrade that solves common storage and email limitations. If you are already close to 100GB or know you need desktop Office apps, skip Basic and consider Microsoft 365 Personal or Family instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Microsoft 365 Basic include Word, Excel, and PowerPoint?

No. Microsoft 365 Basic does not include the desktop Word, Excel, or PowerPoint apps. You can still use the free web versions of Office apps in a browser with a Microsoft account, but they have fewer features than the full desktop versions included with Microsoft 365 Personal and Family.

How much OneDrive storage do I get with Microsoft 365 Basic?

Microsoft 365 Basic includes 100GB of OneDrive cloud storage. That is a big upgrade from the 5GB included with a free Microsoft account and is enough for many people storing documents, phone photos, PDFs, and occasional file backups. It is not ideal if you want to back up large photo libraries, lots of videos, or mulle computers.

What Outlook features are included with Microsoft 365 Basic?

Microsoft 365 Basic gives you an ad-free Outlook web and mobile email experience, plus security features such as phishing and malware protection for emails and attachments. It also includes mailbox storage benefits tied to your Microsoft account, making it more comfortable for regular email use than the free Outlook experience. It does not give you the full Outlook desktop app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Microsoft 365 Basic better than a free Microsoft account?

It is better if you need more cloud storage or want a cleaner Outlook experience without ads. A free Microsoft account includes 5GB of OneDrive storage, access to Office web apps, and Outlook email, which may be enough for light users. The main reason to pay for Basic is the jump to 100GB of OneDrive storage and the improved Outlook web and mobile experience.

Should I choose Microsoft 365 Basic or Microsoft 365 Personal?

Choose Microsoft 365 Basic if you mainly want affordable OneDrive storage and web-based email for about $2 per month. Choose Microsoft 365 Personal if you need the full desktop Office apps, 1TB of OneDrive storage, and more premium features. If several people in your household need Office apps and storage, Microsoft 365 Family is usually the better value.

Bottom Line

Microsoft 365 Basic is best viewed as a low-cost storage and email upgrade, not a full Office subscription. For $2 per month, the main draw is 100GB of OneDrive space, plus a more capable Outlook web experience than a free Microsoft account.

If you only need extra cloud storage and use Office in a browser, Basic can be worth it. If you want desktop Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or much larger storage, step up to Microsoft 365 Personal or Family instead.
