A blank Microlink screenshot often means the capture happened before a client-rendered page finished displaying its content—but timing is only one possible cause. Wait for a page-specific element, trigger lazy or interactive content before capture, and inspect Microlink’s response to distinguish a rendering problem from a blocked page or an image-display issue.
Why is my Microlink screenshot blank?
Navigation completion and application readiness are different. A browser can reach a load event while a client-rendered app is still hydrating or fetching data. The screenshot may show an empty shell, spinner, or placeholder instead of the finished page. Microlink explains in its dynamic-content guide: “The browser considers a page loaded when its resources are fetched, not when the framework has hydrated and the data has arrived.” This is Microlink’s explanation of browser behavior, not an independent benchmark.
Other possibilities include content that loads only after scrolling or clicking, an expired or missing login session, an antibot challenge, or a screenshot asset that exists but is not displayed correctly by your application. A blank-looking image alone does not identify which cause applies. Check the page, request options, response and asset metadata before changing settings.
Check the API response before changing the wait
Microlink’s basic screenshot request uses a target url and screenshot=true. Inspect the HTTP status and response body. A successful response includes data.screenshot.url and screenshot metadata such as width, height, type and size. If the asset has ordinary, nonzero dimensions and size but your own page still displays it as blank, investigate how your application handles the returned image URL rather than assuming Microlink captured an empty page. The documented response shape is in Microlink’s screenshot parameter documentation.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For screenshot-only use, Microlink recommends meta:false to skip unrelated metadata extraction. This can reduce unnecessary work; it does not make an unrendered page ready.
Wait for the content that proves the page is ready
For a client-rendered dashboard or chart, wait for a meaningful element that appears only after the desired content has rendered. Microlink’s example pairs waitUntil:'domcontentloaded' with waitForSelector. Replace .chart svg below with a selector from the target page’s DOM that marks the content you actually need.

const { url } = await microlink.screenshot('https://app.example.com/report', {
meta: false,
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
waitForSelector: '.chart svg'
})
Using a generic element such as body is usually not a useful readiness test: it may exist before the application has hydrated or populated its data. Microlink documents auto, load, domcontentloaded, networkidle0 and networkidle2 as waitUntil choices.
| Wait method | What it waits for | When it can mislead or stall |
|---|---|---|
waitForSelector |
A specific DOM element that indicates the needed content is present. | The selector may match too early, never appear, or not represent the data you need. |
networkidle0 or networkidle2 |
Network activity to become quiet under the selected idle condition. | Long-polling and other persistent connections can keep the page from going quiet. |
waitForTimeout |
A fixed amount of elapsed time. | It may be too short on a slow load, or waste time when content appears quickly. |
A selector is generally the more targeted readiness signal when one is available. Network-idle can help when outstanding requests are the reason content is late, but it is not a universal fix. Use a fixed delay only when there is no stable selector or other observable condition. Microlink says a fixed wait must fit within the plan’s request timeout; the timeout values shown in its dynamic-content guide can change, so check the current documentation rather than relying on an old limit.

Load lazy sections and reveal interactive content first
Some pages do not fetch a section until it enters the viewport. Others keep content hidden behind a tab, accordion, or button. In those cases, waiting for a selector without first triggering the page behavior can wait forever.
- Lazy-loaded section: use Microlink’s
scrolloption to bring the section into view, then wait for a child element such as a card to appear. - Tab or collapsed panel: use
clickon the control, then wait for a selector inside the opened panel. - Element-only capture:
screenshot.elementcaptures a selected DOM element and, according to the dynamic-content guide, waits for its selector to become visible. If you are capturing the viewport or full page and the content appears later, use a separatewaitForSelector.
Choose a selector that identifies the resulting content, not merely the button or container that was already present. Microlink’s dynamic-content examples show how to combine actions and waits in one request.

Tell a timing problem from a blocked or authenticated page
If the screenshot shows a challenge or access-denied page
Do not keep increasing the render delay when the captured page itself indicates blocking. Microlink documents antibot protection as a separate issue: a free-plan request may return EPROXYNEEDED, while its Pro offering can route blocked requests through proxy tiers. That does not mean every blank capture is caused by bot protection; use this diagnosis only when the response or rendered image points to a challenge. See Microlink’s bot-protection guidance.
If the screenshot shows a login form
The target likely did not receive a usable session. Microlink documents forwarding cookies or authorization headers through pro.microlink.io with a valid API key; header forwarding requires Pro. Check that the cookie name and domain match the target, that the session has not expired, and that the request uses the documented endpoint and credentials. Follow Microlink’s authentication guide. Do not expose secrets in a public query string; Microlink directs sensitive values to request headers.

A practical troubleshooting order
- Record what you sent: target URL, request options, endpoint and whether the same page shows its expected content in a normal browser.
- Read the response: check the status and body. If present, inspect
data.screenshot.url, width, height, type and size before debugging a consuming<img>or CDN. - Check what was captured: distinguish an empty shell or spinner from a login page, challenge, access-denied message, or correct screenshot that your application fails to display.
- For late-rendered content: pair an early lifecycle event such as
domcontentloadedwith a selector tied to the desired content. - For lazy or hidden content: scroll or click first, then wait for an element that appears as a result.
- For an explicit block or login: use the relevant access or authentication documentation rather than adding delay.
- If using a fixed wait: verify it fits within the current request timeout and increase it only when the evidence suggests the page needs more time.
Or skip the browser setup
If you would rather call a screenshot API than diagnose browser timing yourself, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request capture. The example saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe; replace the target URL as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

FAQ
Can I tell the exact cause from a blank image alone?
No. The target URL, request options, response and captured page are needed to distinguish timing, access, asset and display issues.
Should I use meta:false to fix the blank capture?
No. It skips metadata extraction for screenshot-only requests; it is a performance simplification, not a readiness condition.
