It defines how camera bodies and lenses connect, including the mount and the image circle for a 4/3-type sensor; it is a camera system, not a camera model or a lens brand.
What does “Four Thirds” mean?
“Four Thirds” refers to the sensor-format category used by the system. The Micro Four Thirds FAQ describes a 4/3-type sensor’s diagonal as about half the diagonal of a 35 mm sensor. A specific OM System camera, for example, lists an imaging area of 17.4 mm × 13.0 mm and a 4:3 aspect ratio; those dimensions are an example for that model, not a universal specification for every Micro Four Thirds camera.

The system’s name does not mean that a lens physically changes focal length. Instead, the smaller sensor captures a narrower angle of view than a 35 mm format sensor would with the same focal length. The official FAQ says roughly twice the focal length marked on a lens gives its 35 mm equivalent for angle of view. For instance, a 25 mm lens gives approximately the angle of view associated with a 50 mm lens on 35 mm format.

Micro Four Thirds extends the earlier Four Thirds standard for mirrorless cameras while retaining its sensor size. Both are interchangeable-lens camera systems, but their lens-mount standards are distinct: a legacy Four Thirds DSLR lens can be used on a Micro Four Thirds body with a mount adapter. That adapted-lens route is different from using a native Micro Four Thirds lens.

- Multi coated lens: A multi coated lens element reduces ghost and flare to deliver high optical performance (12 elements in 9 groups, [1 UHR lens and 2 aspherical lenses])
- Near silent focusing for video and still: inner focus system enables excellent resolution and contrast from full life size magnification to infinity; stepping motor makes focusing action smooth and near silent for use in video and photo recording
- Lumia optical image stabilization: Panasonic Mega O. I. S. Makes it easy to shoot super clear shots even in low lit situations by suppressing the blur caused by a hand movement
- Medium zoom lens: A 45 150mm (35mm camera equivalent: 90 300mm) focal length with F4. 0 5. 6 ASPH provides a versatile medium zoom range of daily situations
- Seven aperture blade construction: The lens’ seven aperture blades produce an attractive smoothness in out of focus areas, even when shooting at large aperture
Will a lens from another manufacturer work?
The standard is designed to let bodies and lenses from different participating manufacturers be combined. The official system information says basic functions such as automatic exposure and autofocus are standardized, but the standard does not guarantee every feature on every body-and-lens combination. The system’s camera finder also cautions that functionality may be limited.
Before buying or adapting a lens, check the camera and lens manufacturers’ compatibility details for the exact pair. Confirm which functions are supported rather than assuming that physical fit means every feature will work.

What the standard does—and does not—tell you
Micro Four Thirds establishes a shared system framework: the camera-lens connection and the image circle for the sensor format. It does not make all cameras or lenses identical, nor does it settle product-specific details such as the full set of supported features. The system organization presents its aim as balancing image quality with compactness and lightness; that is a design goal, not a controlled comparison proving a particular camera will outperform another format.
