Choose a micro data center by matching a specific configuration to your local workload, site, and availability needs—not by relying on the product name or rack-unit count alone. First establish the IT load and growth plan, then verify physical fit, usable cooling, the complete power path, and how the system will be monitored and serviced.

What a micro data center includes—and what the name does not guarantee

A micro data center is a packaged local IT environment, usually built around an enclosure or rack with some combination of power protection and distribution, cooling, monitoring, security, and related components. There is no single standard bill of materials: one offer may include equipment that another treats as optional or external. Compare the exact configuration schedule, included options, and exclusions rather than assuming that two products with the same category name are equivalent.

This approach can suit computing that needs to stay near users, equipment, or local processes. Whether a particular package is suitable depends on the workload and the site, not the label.

Define the workload and site before choosing a size

Write down what must run locally

List the systems that need to operate at the site, their intended rack positions, estimated or measured power draw, network requirements, criticality, and expected additions. State the availability objective in operational terms: which services can tolerate an outage, and which need to continue through a power or component failure? That answer helps determine whether you need a basic protected rack or a design with redundant feeds and cooling.

Schneider Electric’s 2020 edge-site preparation guide addresses power, cooling, connectivity, site assessment, and startup for small server rooms and branch offices with up to 10 kW of IT load. That figure describes the guide’s scope; it is not a general capacity limit for micro data centers.

Check the room and delivery path

Before requesting a final configuration, record doorway and corridor dimensions, floor capacity, available service clearance, room temperature and humidity, dust exposure, security controls, fire requirements, and network connectivity. Ask for a dimensioned drawing and a layout showing the equipment as installed—not just the empty enclosure. Confirm how the unit will be delivered, positioned, and brought into service.

Schneider Electric’s 2023 international low-density R-Series brochure gives examples in 15U, 24U, and 42U sizes; Eaton’s iCube brochure includes 24U and 42U examples. These are product examples, not a complete sizing range. Rack units alone do not establish equipment depth, cable bend room, cooling-unit encroachment, UPS placement, working clearance, weight, or whether the assembled system can pass through the delivery route.

Match capacity to the actual equipment and growth plan

Calculate the planned IT load from the equipment expected to run in the rack, then distinguish that load from the enclosure’s nominal space and any vendor-stated recommended load. Nameplate totals, measured consumption, recommended IT load, and cooling capacity describe different things; ask the supplier to identify the basis and operating conditions for each figure.

Allow physical room for cabling, power equipment, and any internal cooling components, as well as for planned additions. Ask which rack positions remain usable after the selected UPS, PDU, and cooling arrangement is installed. The cited vendor material does not establish a universal growth percentage or a single formula that sizes every micro data center.

Size cooling for the site, not just the brochure number

Have the supplier validate usable cooling against the planned IT load and the site’s ambient temperature, humidity, dust, airflow, and heat-rejection conditions. Clarify where hot air goes, whether cooling is self-contained or split, whether the design requires wall or roof penetrations, and how condensate is handled where applicable. Confirm routine maintenance needs and what happens to cooling during a utility outage.

Published examples show how widely configurations can differ; they are not recommendations for a particular site:

Published example Capacity or figure How to interpret it
Schneider Electric, 2023 EcoStruxure R-Series low-density international brochure Cooling capacities from 500 W to 2 kW across configurations Product specifications for cited configurations, not a universal cooling range for the category.
Eaton, iCube brochure; search result dated 2025 Example cooling capacities of 3.5 kW and 4.2 kW Configuration-specific figures; verify the latest model data and the conditions under which capacity is rated.
Eaton, iCube brochure; search result dated 2025 3 kW recommended IT load in cited example configurations A vendor figure for those examples, not a general load recommendation or a cooling rating.

Do not apply high-density AI or HPC rack assumptions to an ordinary edge cabinet without a reason. AMD’s high-density design guide discusses power and cooling constraints at hundreds of kilowatts per rack, a different design regime from the cited micro data center examples.

Validate the complete power path

Ask facilities or a qualified electrical professional to confirm the available supply and applicable local requirements before ordering. The review should cover circuit capacity, voltage, phase, frequency, connector, and the intended rack load with planned additions. Do not treat an online selection guide as a substitute for site-specific electrical review.

Check the UPS and what it actually keeps running

Establish whether the proposed system uses an internal or external UPS, its capacity and topology, the runtime at the expected load, and whether supported battery expansion is available. Confirm which loads remain powered during an outage; depending on the design, cooling and network equipment may need to be considered alongside servers.

Eaton’s published iCube examples include a 220 V single-phase input and a 6 kVA UPS in cited configurations. Those are model examples, not ratings to transfer to a different package or site.

Match the PDU to the circuit and devices

Select a rack PDU by its input compatibility, outlet type and count, rack form factor, metering or switching requirements, environmental rating, and redundancy needs. Eaton’s rack PDU selection guidance recommends determining equipment load and accounting for growth, then checking feasible circuit options. Its buying guide discusses outlet matching, including C13 and C19 types. Match the PDU’s voltage, phase, current, input plug, and outlet mix to both the supply and the devices being connected.

Where equipment has redundant power supplies, Eaton advises connecting those supplies to separate PDUs and circuits to support redundant power paths. Confirm that the site and proposed system actually provide those independent paths; two PDUs on the same circuit do not create independent utility feeds.

Assess serviceability, monitoring, and protection

Review the installed layout and maintenance procedures, not just the feature list. Check front and rear access, door swing, isolation points, cable routes, installation and lifting needs, and whether components can be replaced safely. For the selected configuration, ask about battery replacement, fan or cooling-component access, filter maintenance if applicable, emergency access, and whether service can continue on a redundant component while another is maintained.

Clarify who commissions the system, who receives alarms, which communication protocols and interfaces are available, how event history is retained, and what local spares and support response commitments are included. These operational details affect recovery time, but the cited product materials do not offer a standardized cross-vendor serviceability score.

Vendor literature describes different monitoring and protection options. Eaton’s iCube brochure lists touchscreen and remote monitoring, SNMP/HTTP connectivity, and example smoke, water-leak, and temperature sensing. Schneider Electric’s brochure describes monitoring, UPS, PDU, and fire suppression as configurable or compatible elements. Delta Electronics’ InfraSuite product page describes control across air conditioning, UPS, environment, and smart-rack functions, including temperature/humidity, lighting, PDU, and door sensing. For any quote, verify which sensors, licenses, network connections, and management subscriptions are included.

Product specifications, regional catalogs, commercial terms, certifications, and support commitments can change. Obtain current, region-specific documentation and a written configuration before comparing offers.

What to request in a quote

Ask each supplier to provide a configuration-specific schedule and drawings so you can compare the same requirements across offers. A useful request includes:

  • Enclosure dimensions, usable rack units, equipment depth and weight limits, installed layout, access clearances, and delivery requirements.
  • IT-load basis, growth assumptions, cooling capacity and rating conditions, air path, heat rejection, condensate needs, and any cooling redundancy.
  • Power input requirements, circuit and connector details, UPS configuration and runtime at the expected load, battery options, PDU input and outlet schedule, and how redundant paths are arranged.
  • Monitoring and sensor list, interfaces, included software or subscriptions, alarm routing, and event-history capability.
  • Commissioning and startup responsibilities, maintenance access and procedures, warranty, local support response, spares, installation scope, and applicable regional certifications.

The cited product documents provide useful configuration examples and selection considerations, but they do not establish current quotations, availability, or support terms for a specific country or site. Request those details directly from the vendor and have facilities validate the proposed design.
