Miami Shuttle vs. Bus, Metrorail, and Rideshare: Which Should You Take?

Miami’s “shuttle” can mean a fixed-route Beach trolley, zone-limited Freebee, or a County shuttle bus. Match the service to your route, hours, and connections.

For Miami Beach trips, check the free trolley first if both ends are near its fixed routes; in parts of Mid Beach and North Beach, Freebee offers free on-demand rides. Use Metrobus for destinations its county network serves, Metrorail when both ends fit the rail corridor, and rideshare when you need door-to-door coverage or a transit route does not fit. There is no universal fastest or cheapest choice: the right option depends on your addresses, travel time, and connections.

First, identify which “shuttle” you mean

In Miami, “shuttle” can refer to different services. Miami Beach operates a fixed-route citywide trolley and a separate on-demand service with Freebee. Miami-Dade Transit also lists a shuttle bus category in its fare information. Their coverage and operating patterns are not interchangeable.

Miami Beach trolley

The City’s trolley has South, Middle, and North Beach routes. It runs daily from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., with average service about every 20 minutes along each route. It is a free neighborhood circulator with fixed stops, not a ride to every Miami destination or a door-to-door service. See the City’s trolley routes and service details.

Freebee in parts of Miami Beach

Freebee provides free, on-demand trips that start and end within its defined zone in Mid Beach and portions of North Beach. The City recommends requesting a ride about 20 minutes before you want to leave. Published hours vary by day: Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m.–10 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m.–10 p.m.; Sunday, 8 a.m.–8 p.m. It can also connect riders with the trolley and County bus service within the zone. Check whether both addresses are in the service area before relying on it. Check Freebee’s service area and hours.

How the main options compare

Miami Beach trolley Free trips between places near its Beach routes Fixed routes and stops; daily 8 a.m.–11 p.m.; approximately 20-minute average frequency Free; check that both ends are near a route and allow for the wait
Freebee Door-to-door trips or a first/last-mile connection within its zone On demand in Mid Beach and portions of North Beach; hours vary by day Free; request around 20 minutes ahead, as the City recommends
Metrobus Trips served by the county bus network, including connections to Miami Beach and other county destinations Routes and schedules depend on origin, destination, and time $2.25 regular fare per ride; transfers and payment method affect the trip cost
Metrorail Trips that fit the rail corridor, including trips involving the MIA station Rail service does not reach every destination; airport arrangements vary by day $2.25 regular fare per ride; station fare gates do not accept cash
Rideshare Door-to-door trips, awkward connections, or journeys outside transit hours Pickup and drop-off depend on driver availability and applicable rules Fare and ETA depend on the particular trip; check the app

County fares, pass details, and service information can change. Confirm current routes, schedules, and payment rules with Miami-Dade Transit’s fare information, Metrobus, and Metrorail.

What Metrobus and Metrorail cost—and how transfers work

Miami-Dade County’s fare page, accessed in 2026, lists regular Metrobus and Metrorail fares at $2.25 per ride. It lists a $5.65 one-day pass and fare capping at $5.65 per day for unlimited Metrobus or Metrorail rides. The County also lists shuttle bus as a free fare category. Check the current fare page for the exact product and rules before travelling.

Because transfer treatment can depend on fare media and current rules, verify how your payment method applies to your itinerary.

Can you take Metrorail to Miami airport?

Yes. Miami-Dade Transit identifies a MIA station on the Orange Line, and the system’s published operating hours are 5 a.m. to midnight daily. Airport train arrangements depend on the day: on weekends, Orange Line trains provide airport shuttle service between Earlington Heights and MIA every 15 minutes, and passengers heading to the airport must transfer at Earlington Heights. Consult the current Metrorail information and live service notices for your travel date, especially if you are connecting from another line.

Getting between Miami Beach and MIA

The City of Miami Beach estimates that Miami International Airport is approximately 10 miles west of Miami Beach. That distance alone does not establish journey time: your exact address, traffic, departure time, and transit connections all matter. The Beach trolley is a local circulator, not an airport service, so use a trip planner to check how Metrobus and Metrorail fit your specific route, or compare a rideshare quote for your addresses and departure time.

At MIA, rideshare pickup and drop-off are subject to the airport’s designated rules and zones. Follow airport signs and the app’s pickup instructions; see the Miami-Dade Aviation Department’s transportation network company information. No fixed rideshare fare or wait time applies to every trip.

Choose by trip shape, hours, and connections

  • Both destinations are near Miami Beach trolley routes: Check the route and operating hours first if a free, fixed-stop ride works for your schedule.
  • You are in the Freebee zone: If both addresses qualify, request a ride with the City’s recommended lead time; its on-demand pattern may suit a trip that does not line up with trolley stops.
  • Your trip crosses the county: Search Metrobus routes and schedules for the actual addresses and departure time. Do not assume that one bus will cover the whole trip.
  • Both ends are near the rail corridor: Metrorail can be a practical option, particularly for an airport connection, but check the applicable line and transfer arrangement.
  • You have luggage, a late departure, or an awkward connection: Compare a rideshare quote with the available transit itinerary. For airport journeys, use the designated pickup or drop-off location.

For Miami Beach trolley arrival estimates, the City says riders can use Transit App for real-time tracking; the City covers the app’s premium subscription for trolley tracking. The City also offers ETA information by calling or texting stop IDs. See Miami Beach trolley information for current details.
