For a smoother start in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, choose the control scheme that feels familiar, scan unfamiliar objects and enemies when you need a clue, and use lock-on to help track targets as you dodge. Psychic abilities and Morph Ball skills are not just combat tools: they also open routes and solve puzzles.
Choose a control scheme that suits your aiming style
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is available for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo lists a December 4, 2025 release date for the U.S. product and offers both platform editions. The control options described below—Dual Stick Fusion, Pointer Fusion and mouse control with a Joy-Con 2—are Switch 2 features; do not assume the mouse option is available on the original Switch.

On Switch 2, start with the scheme you already understand. If aiming feels awkward, adjust sensitivity or remap controls, or try another scheme. Button assignments vary by scheme, and a community-authored GameFAQs guide says most controls can be remapped, so a long fixed button list may not match your setup.

- Dual Stick Fusion: Use both analogue sticks for movement and aiming. It will feel familiar if you play console shooters with two sticks.
- Pointer Fusion: Move with the left stick and aim using motion controls. This is the gyro-aiming option.
- Mouse control: Place the right Joy-Con 2 on a surface and use it to aim like a mouse.
Nintendo Australia also lists Quality and Performance display modes for the Switch 2 edition. Supported output depends on the mode and on whether the connected display supports it; check Nintendo’s Switch 2 edition details if you are choosing a display mode.

Scan when you need a clue or more context
Make the Scan Visor part of your exploration routine, especially when you encounter stone statues, ruins, outlined objects or unfamiliar enemies. Nintendo specifically points players to scanning statues and ruins for clues about how to advance. If a device’s purpose or a route forward is unclear, scanning before guessing can save time.
Scans also add information about Viewros’s creatures, structures and story. Tom’s Guide reports that scanning can offer useful hints for boss encounters, so scan an unfamiliar enemy or boss before settling on a tactic. Scanning contributes to collectible entries, too, but that does not mean every scan is required to progress.
Use lock-on to follow enemies while you dodge
Tom’s Guide describes a combat setup in which the left trigger locks on to an enemy and allows dodging in four directions. When learning an opponent’s timing, lock on to keep your attention on the target, then dodge directionally to avoid incoming attacks. Treat this as a practical starting point, not a guarantee that one approach suits every encounter.

As your abilities expand, remember that combat and exploration overlap: psychic powers can steer charged shots, while the Control Beam can direct a shot toward a target or mechanism. Nintendo describes psychic abilities as a way to operate mechanisms and reach areas that were previously inaccessible; their value is not limited to fights.

Use new abilities to rethink routes
The main objective is to explore Viewros and find a way home. Scanning ruins, fighting alien creatures and using psychic abilities to clear a path are all part of that journey. Morph Ball changes how Samus moves through the environment and is used for puzzles and doors, according to Tom’s Guide. When a passage or mechanism remains out of reach, note it and reconsider it after gaining a new ability. That is a useful exploration habit, rather than a promise that every blocked route will later open.
For faster travel and open-area combat, Nintendo describes the Vi-O-La as a motorcycle. It complements the game’s on-foot exploration, scanning and ability-based progression.
Check the game version before following dated advice
Nintendo Support lists software update Ver. 1.1.0, released December 3, 2025. Its notes mention adjustments to some enemy difficulty in Hard mode and gameplay fixes. Update details can change, so check Nintendo’s Metroid Prime 4: Beyond update page for the version currently listed for your region.
