Both measurements describe the width across the flats of a fastener head—not its thread size. For the best fit, use a socket marked for the fastener’s exact size and measurement system. A near-equivalent from the other system may fit loosely and damage the fastener’s corners, particularly under load.
What metric and SAE socket sizes measure
The number on a socket refers to the distance across the flat faces of a compatible hex fastener. Metric sockets mark that width in millimetres; SAE sockets mark it in inches, usually as a fraction. A bolt’s thread designation does not, by itself, tell you which socket fits its head. Check the fastener specification or measure across the flats.

“SAE” is the familiar label for inch-size sockets in this context. The important practical distinction is the unit of measurement, not a guarantee that two sockets with nearby numbers are interchangeable.

Can you substitute a metric socket for an SAE size?
Sometimes the dimensions are close, but a close conversion is not a fit guarantee. Compel Group’s conversion chart, reviewed August 16, 2026, compares selected metric sizes with nearby SAE sizes and assigns fit labels. The chart says excess clearance can round fastener corners; its labels and gap thresholds should be read as that chart’s guidance, not as a universal standard.

Extension bars allow better reach in deep or hard-to-access areas, improving flexibility during work. Additionally, the adapters enable seamless conversion between different drive sizes, expanding compatibility across various sockets and tools
- Remarkable Design & Solid Box: Each socket has its own dedicated slot for organized storage and quick access, with clearly marked sizes for easy identification. The durable blow-molded case provides strong protection, preventing loss or mix-ups. The well-structured design also makes it convenient to carry and store in garages, workshops, or vehicles
| Metric socket | Nearest SAE size in Compel’s chart | Charted gap | Chart label |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 mm | 5/16 in | 0.0025 in | Good |
| 10 mm | 3/8 in | 0.0187 in | Poor |
| 12 mm | 15/32 in | 0.0036 in | Good |
| 13 mm | 1/2 in | 0.0118 in | Poor |
| 16 mm | 5/8 in | 0.0049 in | Loose |
| 17 mm | 11/16 in | 0.0182 in | Poor |
| 19 mm | 3/4 in | 0.0020 in | Good |
| 27 mm | 1 1/16 in | 0.0005 in | Good |
These are Compel’s comparisons, not independently measured fit results or a promise that a particular socket will work on every fastener. For example, the chart lists a 0.0182-inch gap between 17 mm and 11/16 in and labels that comparison poor, while it lists a 0.0020-inch gap between 19 mm and 3/4 in and calls it good. Even when a chart labels a pair good, use the correctly sized socket when available—especially if applying substantial force or working on a fastener with worn corners. See Compel Group’s socket size chart.
Which socket set should you choose?
For mixed fasteners, consider both systems
If your work involves fasteners marked in both systems, a metric-and-SAE set is a practical starting point. Choose the size range and drive size for the work you actually do; a dual-system set reduces reliance on approximate substitutions, but does not guarantee coverage for every fastener or application.

Check reach, point profile, and application
Socket size is only one selection factor. Shallow and deep sockets reach different fasteners, while six-point and twelve-point profiles suit different fastener geometries and applications. Specialty construction may also matter: standards distinguish, for example, high-strength and thin-wall designs. SAE MA4534A covers high-strength commercial and universal metric sockets for six-point hex fasteners. ANSI’s catalog describes SAE AS 954H-2023 for high-strength thin-wall and universal sockets, among other tools, for twelve-point fasteners; it also says AS955 covers metric socket requirements and supersedes MA4534 and MA4535. These standards describe tool scope and design requirements, not a consumer set recommendation.
When comparing sets, check measurement-system coverage, included size range, drive size, point profile, socket depth, and whether the intended application calls for standard or specialty construction.

What socket size do common reader questions point to?
What is 17 mm in standard?
In the Compel chart, the nearest listed SAE size to 17 mm is 11/16 in. The chart shows a 0.0182-inch gap and labels the comparison poor, so do not treat 11/16 in as a generally safe substitute.
Is 19 mm the same as 3/4 inch?
No. They are close: Compel’s chart lists a 0.0020-inch gap and labels the comparison good. That is a chart comparison, not proof of a safe fit on every fastener; use the specified size where possible.

Why can a metric socket fit an SAE bolt?
Some metric and SAE sizes are dimensionally close enough that a socket may go onto a fastener. That does not mean the fit is correct: clearance can let the socket bear unevenly and round the fastener’s corners. The size to use is the fastener’s across-flats measurement, in the matching system when available.

Standards help explain why matching a number alone does not capture every tool difference. SAE International’s MA4534A, Socket Wrenches, Hand (Metric), stabilized February 10, 2013, covers high-strength commercial and universal metric sockets for six-point hex fasteners. Its scope specifies a design intended to transmit torque without bearing on the outer 5% of the fastener’s wrenching points; it also says listed dimensional data do not mean every size is a stock production size.

ANSI’s catalog entry for SAE AS 954H-2023 describes high-strength thin-wall and universal sockets, box wrenches, and torque adaptors for twelve-point fasteners. The catalog also summarizes AS955 metric socket requirements and notes that AS955 supersedes MA4534 and MA4535. ANSI’s listing for ASME B107.17-2020 (R2025) covers final inspection gage and test mandrel sizes for inch and metric wrench openings, including spark-plug wrench openings, for commonly manufactured sizes rather than every possible size.
