This error means your PowerShell session is running in ConstrainedLanguage mode, which allows method calls only on a limited set of approved types. In most cases it is a deliberate security control, usually applied through AppLocker or Windows Defender Application Control (WDAC), not a bug in your script. Confirm the active mode first, then either rewrite the script to use supported cmdlets and types or ask the policy owner for an approved route.
What the error means
The message is a PowerShell language-mode restriction, not a generic syntax error. Your code is valid PowerShell, but the session will not invoke a method on the object type you used. Microsoft’s PowerShell language-mode documentation (PowerShell 7.6 edition, last updated January 26, 2026) describes ConstrainedLanguage as a mode in which only methods on approved types can be called. If your call used a .NET class or a COM object outside that list, the call fails with this message.

Readers often search for variations such as “Cannot invoke method” or ask what the error means and how to fix it. The wording is the same troubleshooting message documented in Microsoft and AWS guidance.

Start by checking which mode the session is using. The check only works in a session that permits property access, so run it in the same session where the error occurs.

- Run the following command:
$ExecutionContext.SessionState.LanguageMode - Read the result:
- ConstrainedLanguage: this matches the error. Continue with the fixes below.
- FullLanguage: the restriction is not coming from language mode, so check the exact line that failed and the object type it uses.
- RestrictedLanguage or NoLanguage: Microsoft notes these modes can block the property-access check itself, so the check will not return a usable value. Treat the session as restricted and work with the session owner to find its configuration.
Why the restriction exists
On Windows, PowerShell switches to ConstrainedLanguage automatically when it detects an AppLocker or WDAC application-control policy. A session configuration can also specify a language mode directly, so the restriction may come from a host or endpoint setting rather than from the machine policy alone.
The purpose is security. The PowerShell Team’s 2017 post on Constrained Language, updated in 2018, puts it this way:

“PowerShell Constrained Language is a language mode of PowerShell designed to support day-to-day administrative tasks, yet restrict access to sensitive language elements that can be used to invoke arbitrary Windows APIs.” (Paul Higinbotham, PowerShell Team)
In practice, cmdlets and basic language features remain available. Restricted operations include calls on unapproved types, COM objects, creating new types, and some other operations. Scripts that depend on those features will fail even though nothing is syntactically wrong with them.

How to fix it
Choose the path that matches who controls the machine. If the restriction is intentional, the right fix is almost always to change the script or request an approved exception, not to remove the control.
Option 1: Adapt the script
Look for a supported cmdlet that performs the same task. Many administrative jobs that appear to need a .NET class or COM object can be done with built-in cmdlets. Replace the failing method call with the cmdlet, or with a method on a type the session permits, and run the script again in the same session.

Option 2: Request a policy review
If the script genuinely needs a restricted operation, send it to the policy owner for review. Microsoft’s PowerShell Team explains that scripts approved through the organization’s application-control process can run in FullLanguage mode. Reviewers should understand that trusted code and trusted signing authorities can have broad access once approved, so the review should cover what the script does, not only whether it runs.

What not to do
Do not use environment-variable overrides, policy edits, or other bypasses to force FullLanguage on a managed machine. The policy may be protecting the system, and changes should go through the administrator’s normal security process.

Context-specific cases
The same message appears in some cloud and managed services, but the documented remedies differ. Use the context table to find the one that applies to you.

Azure Automation sandbox jobs
Microsoft documents this exact error for PowerShell jobs started from a runbook in an Azure sandbox. The suggested remedies are to replace Start-Job with Start-AzAutomationRunbook, or to run the runbook on a Hybrid Runbook Worker. Use these options only if your failure occurs in that Azure Automation job context. Changing a local script will not affect how the sandbox runs it.
AWS Windows VSS snapshots
AWS states that its AWSEC2-CreateVssSnapshot document requires PowerShell in FullLanguage mode. AWS directs users to the same $ExecutionContext.SessionState.LanguageMode check and to Microsoft’s language-mode documentation. If that document fails with this error, the fix is to meet its FullLanguage requirement through the instance’s configuration and approved process, not to edit the document’s internal calls.

Practical checklist
- Run
$ExecutionContext.SessionState.LanguageModein the failing session. - If the result is
ConstrainedLanguage, identify the exact line and object type that failed. - Replace the call with a supported cmdlet or permitted type where one exists.
- If the operation is required, send the script to the policy owner for review.
- For Azure Automation or AWS, follow the context-specific remedy in the table above.
