The company describes the virtual machine (VM) used for user data as private and secure, but that description is Meta’s own characterization—not an independent assessment of Muse’s security or a full explanation of how chats are stored and accessed.
What Meta says about Muse and adult conversations
In comments to WIRED, Meta spokesperson Daniel Roberts said: “Muse is an app for people 18 and over that allows them to engage in adult conversations, if they choose, using a private and secure VM only accessible to them.” Roberts added: “Muse is built to help people get things done, and it doesn’t block legal adult behavior.”

Roberts was referring to secure virtual machines Meta uses to store AI-agent user data. His statement establishes Meta’s stated age threshold and policy position: the app is for people 18 and older, users may choose adult conversations, and legal adult behavior is not blocked. It does not establish how Muse handles every prompt or independently verify the VM’s security.
What WIRED reported in its tests
WIRED reported on October 12, 2026, that its journalist elicited explicit responses from Muse in particular interactions. The report also quoted a passage from Muse’s system prompt: “Adults have autonomy over their sexuality, and sexual expression is an ordinary part of adult life. Adult sexual content is lawful expression and legitimate creative work.” According to WIRED, the directive also tells Muse to preserve the intensity selected by the user.

These are observations from the journalist’s tests, not a reproducible benchmark or a guarantee that Muse will respond uniformly to all users, prompts, or circumstances. The report described Muse as a breakout hit and said millions of users had downloaded it since launch; it did not provide an exact download count. It said the app had launched about three weeks before publication, without giving an exact launch date.
What “private and secure VM” does—and does not—tell users
A VM is a computing environment that runs separately from other environments on a host system. Meta’s description indicates that it uses VMs to store AI-agent user data and characterizes them as accessible only to the user. The statement alone does not spell out the system’s technical design or threat model.

WIRED’s report does not establish how long Muse conversations are retained, whether staff or other systems can access them, what access controls apply in practice, or how a compromise might expose data. Nor does it report that a breach has occurred. The distinction matters: a company’s privacy assurance is relevant, but it is not the same as a public technical account or an independent security audit.

Ben Winters, director of AI and privacy at the Consumer Federation of America, criticized the approach, saying: “It reflects a carelessness with their signature product of the moment,” and “It is in line with Meta’s longstanding choice of addiction and engagement over safety.” Those are Winters’s assessments, not independently established findings in the report.

Calli Schroeder, senior counsel at the Electronic Privacy Information Center, called the situation “a powder keg.” Her concern was hypothetical: if an account were compromised, explicit chats could be exposed, potentially leading to embarrassment or extortion. WIRED did not report an actual account compromise or breach.

In the journalist’s described interactions, similar explicit prompts were declined by OpenAI’s Dots agent and xAI’s Grok Bot; Grok reportedly redirected the discussion toward task completion. WIRED also noted that OpenAI had previously considered erotic text generation for ChatGPT, but that capability never launched to users. These are comparisons based on the reporter’s prompts, not comprehensive evaluations of the services’ policies or products.

WIRED published its report on October 12, 2026. Its findings support a narrow conclusion: Meta says Muse is intended for adults and does not block legal adult behavior, and WIRED reported eliciting explicit outputs in its own tests. The available account does not resolve broader questions about data retention, access, or security protections.
