Choose the Meta Quest 3S if you want wireless VR and mixed reality that works without a console or computer for ordinary use. Choose PlayStation VR2 if you have a PS5 and want its OLED display, eye tracking, foveated rendering, 3D audio, headset feedback, and Sense controller features. PS VR2 can also connect to a Windows PC, but that route requires extra hardware and loses several PS5 features.

These are different kinds of systems rather than interchangeable headsets. Quest 3S is the flexible all-in-one choice; PS VR2 is the more feature-rich console-VR choice for PS5 owners. Their published specifications do not by themselves establish which looks sharper, feels more comfortable, or offers better value to a particular buyer.

Which is better: Meta Quest 3S or PS VR2?
Choose Quest 3S for standalone wireless VR and mixed reality
Quest 3S runs games and apps on the headset, so ordinary setup and use do not require a PC or console. Its full-color passthrough supports mixed-reality experiences, and its wireless design suits use around the home. Meta describes it as an “all-in-one wireless headset.” The trade-offs include battery dependence and Fresnel optics rather than the PS VR2’s OLED display.

If you already own a PS5, PS VR2 gives you access to PS VR2-compatible PS5 games and Sony’s listed features: OLED displays, eye tracking, foveated rendering, headset feedback, Sense controller haptics and adaptive triggers, and Tempest 3D AudioTech. Support depends on the game; these features are not guaranteed across the whole library. The headset is tethered to the PS5 by a cable.

Neither headset is a universal winner based on specifications alone. Display type, resolution, refresh rate, field of view, and feature lists describe different aspects of the experience; they are not independent tests of perceived sharpness, comfort, tracking, or motion sickness.
Do you need a PS5 for PS VR2?
Yes, for its console-VR use: PS VR2 requires a PS5. It does not work with PS4, and original PS VR games are not compatible. Sony’s PS VR2 compatibility information explains the supported console and game compatibility.

There is a separate Windows PC route, but it is not a way to use PS VR2 as a standalone headset. It requires Sony’s PC adapter, a separate DisplayPort 1.4 cable, supported PC hardware, and Steam software. Several features available with PS5 are unavailable on PC.

Yes. Quest 3S is designed to run its Quest apps and games directly on the headset. A PC is optional, not a requirement for ordinary use. Meta also supports PC connections through Quest Link Cable or Air Link, and says Steam games can be streamed from a computer using Steam Link. Streaming performance depends on the computer and connection; this does not make Quest 3S equivalent to a native wired PC headset.

Meta lists a 2.5-hour average run time. Treat that as an estimate rather than a guaranteed session length: battery life varies with settings, activity, battery age, Bluetooth use, and wireless conditions.
How do the displays and controls differ?
Meta lists Quest 3S at 1832 × 1920 pixels per eye, with Fresnel lenses, a 96° horizontal and 90° vertical field of view, and 72, 90, and 120 Hz modes. Sony lists PS VR2’s OLED displays at 2000 × 2040 pixels per eye, an approximately 110° field of view, and a 90–120 Hz refresh range. These manufacturer specifications are not a direct measurement of comparative image quality.

The control systems also reflect different priorities. Quest 3S has Touch Plus controllers with haptics, plus hand tracking and controller-free navigation. PS VR2’s Sense controllers add adaptive triggers and haptics, while its headset includes eye tracking and headset feedback; Sony also lists Tempest 3D AudioTech. Compatibility is game-dependent, so the presence of a feature does not mean every title uses it.
Can you use PS VR2 on a PC?
Yes, with Sony’s PS VR2 PC adapter and a compatible Windows computer. You also need a separately sold DisplayPort 1.4 cable, Steam, SteamVR, and the PlayStation VR2 app. Sony’s PC setup and compatibility requirements specify the supported hardware:

What do the two headsets cost?
Prices depend on country, retailer, and date. The figures below are not a like-for-like total-system comparison: the Meta figures are live US store listings observed October 7, 2026, while Sony’s figure is an announced US recommended retail price effective March 2025.
| Product | Published US price | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Meta Quest 3S, 128GB | $349.99, listed in Meta’s US store on October 7, 2026. | Standalone use does not require a separate console or PC. Store price can change. |

| PlayStation VR2 | $399.99 US recommended retail price, announced by Sony for March 2025. | For console VR, add the cost of a PS5 if you do not already own one. This announced RRP does not confirm current stock or checkout price. |
Sony also announced regional recommended retail prices of €449.99, £399.99, and ¥66,980; availability and timing may vary by country or region. Check current local listings before buying. For PC use, factor in the required adapter and separate DisplayPort cable as well as the computer specifications.
Which should you buy?
- Pick Quest 3S if you want a headset that works without a console or computer, value wireless play or mixed reality, or want the option to stream PC VR games.
- Pick PS VR2 if you already have a PS5, want its OLED and console-specific immersion features, and are comfortable with a cable connection.
- Consider PS VR2 for PC only if your Windows computer meets Sony’s requirements and you accept the PC feature limitations and extra equipment.
Choose based on the system you can use and the experience you want—not on a single resolution or price figure. Verify current local pricing and the requirements for your preferred way to play before purchasing.
