Both Meta Quest 3 and Quest 2 can play PC VR games through Meta Quest Link, and Steam lists both as compatible with Steam Link. Quest 3’s main advantages are its higher-resolution physical display, wider published field of view, and continuously adjustable IPD—not faster PC game rendering. Your computer, connection, and game settings still determine how well PC VR runs.
What changes on Quest 3
Higher physical display resolution
Meta lists Quest 3’s display at 2064 × 2208 pixels per eye, compared with 1832 × 1920 pixels per eye for Quest 2. Those are panel specifications, not a guarantee that a PC game will render at that resolution. The application’s render resolution can be adjusted, and higher render scale increases GPU workload. See Meta’s device comparison and Meta’s render-scale guidance.

Wider stated field of view
Meta lists Quest 3 at 110° horizontal and 96° vertical. The official Quest 2 material cited here does not provide a comparable field-of-view figure, so a numeric Quest 2 comparison is not established by these sources.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →More granular IPD adjustment
Quest 3 uses a continuous IPD slider; Meta described Quest 2 as having three lens-position settings. That gives Quest 3 more adjustment positions on paper, but it does not guarantee a better fit for every person. Meta’s comparison and its Quest 2 announcement document the difference.

Color passthrough and depth hardware
Quest 3 includes color stereoscopic passthrough listed at 4 MP (18 PPD) and a depth sensor. These are hardware distinctions relevant to mixed reality; they are not the image path used to render a PC VR game.
A newer standalone chipset, not a faster PC
Quest 3 uses Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, while Quest 2’s launch announcement identifies Snapdragon XR2. That difference concerns the headset’s standalone hardware. In Link PC VR, the Windows PC supplies the additional computing power for the PC experience, so the newer headset chipset is not evidence that Quest 3 will make a PC render games faster. Meta describes Link in its Link update.

What stays the same for PC VR
Both work with Meta Link and Steam Link
Meta lists Quest 3 for wired Link or Air Link, and its Quest 2 launch material documented Oculus Link PC VR. Steam lists both headsets for Steam Link. Compatibility does not establish that image quality, latency, game performance, or setup experience will be identical. See Meta’s device comparison, the Quest 2 announcement, and Steam Link support.

Both have the same listed refresh-rate targets
Meta’s rendering documentation lists 72, 80, 90, and 120 Hz targets for both headsets. Meta separately announced 120 Hz Link support for Quest 3 in 2024, stating: “Link now supports a 120Hz refresh rate for PCVR titles with Quest 3.” A supported mode is not the same as a game sustaining that frame rate: the PC must render frames in time, and Meta warns that missed frame rates can cause judder and related artifacts. See Meta’s rendering guidance and its Link update.

Wired Link, Air Link, or Steam Link?
Each route connects the headset to a PC, but the connection and setup differ. Wired Link uses a USB connection; Air Link and Steam Link stream wirelessly. Steam’s compatibility listing confirms support for both headsets, but not equal results in every home network or PC configuration.
- Choose wired Link if you prefer a cable connection. Meta’s developer hardware setup instructions recommend a USB-C data cable supporting at least 5 GB/s; this is a recommendation in developer setup guidance, not a universal consumer requirement. Check that a cable listing specifies data capability, connector type, length, and compatibility. See Meta’s hardware setup guidance.
- Choose Air Link or Steam Link if you want a wireless connection and your network is suitable. A cable is not required for these wireless options.
Meta’s March 2024 Link update reported approximately 30% lower power consumption during Link sessions and estimated Air Link runtime increasing from 90 minutes to about 140 minutes. These are Meta’s update-era figures, not guaranteed battery life for every headset, battery condition, or current setup. Meta also noted that USB Link runtime depends on the power supplied by the PC.

How to choose between them
Keep Quest 2 if your setup already meets your needs
If your Quest 2 works well for your PC VR library and you are satisfied with its display and fit, the documented differences do not make an upgrade necessary for compatibility alone. Both models are supported for Link and Steam Link.
Consider Quest 3 for hardware-side display and fit changes
Quest 3 is the more relevant choice if its higher physical panel resolution, published field of view, continuous IPD adjustment, or color passthrough and depth hardware matter to you. These are headset-side changes; they do not remove PC, network, or game-setting limits.

Check the PC and settings before blaming the headset
For either headset, render scale and refresh target affect the work demanded of the PC. If a game struggles, lowering render scale or selecting a refresh rate the PC can sustain may help; increasing detail or refresh rate can raise the workload. Meta’s render-scale documentation explains this trade-off.
Quest 2 availability
Meta’s Quest 2 product page said the headset was no longer available directly from Meta as of October 3, 2026. That does not establish whether third-party sellers have stock, and availability can vary by market. See Meta’s Quest 2 product page.
