Choose Meta Quest 3 if you want wireless, standalone VR, color mixed reality, or a flexible route into PC VR. Choose PlayStation VR2 if you own a PS5 and want to play its VR library on an OLED headset. Both can connect to a PC, but PS VR2 needs a separate adapter and DisplayPort cable, and its PC mode omits several PS5 features.

Specifications are not a complete image-quality or comfort verdict: panel type, fit, content, and individual perception all matter. Meta describes Quest devices as wireless all-in-one VR devices. Sony requires a PS5 for PS VR2 console games. Meta’s device specifications and Sony’s PS VR2 specifications give the full hardware details.

Choose Quest 3 if you want standalone and mixed-reality flexibility
Play without a console
Quest 3 runs its own apps wirelessly, so you do not need a PS5 or gaming PC to use its standalone library. That makes it the more practical choice if you want to move between rooms, travel with a headset, or start VR without arranging a console connection. Meta estimates about two hours of battery life; that is a manufacturer estimate, not an independent test, and standalone use is not all-day use.
Use color passthrough and room-aware apps
Quest 3 has color stereoscopic passthrough and a depth sensor, features that let supported experiences combine digital content with a view of your surroundings. If mixed reality is part of the appeal, Quest 3 is the clearer fit based on the published specifications. Sony’s PS VR2 spec page does not establish a comparable Quest-style mixed-reality capability.

Add PC VR when you want it
Meta Quest Link supports PC VR over a cable or Air Link. Wireless PC play avoids a headset cable but depends on the quality of your network and setup; a wired connection is an alternative. Check the requirements of the PC games you intend to play as well as Meta’s setup guidance before buying on the assumption that every title or computer will work.
Choose PS VR2 if you have a PS5 and want its VR library
A straightforward match for PS5 gaming
For someone who already owns a PS5 and wants PS VR2 games, Sony’s headset is the direct console option: it connects to the PS5 with one USB-C cable. The headset includes eye tracking and headset vibration, and supported PS5 experiences can make use of those features. Its OLED panel is another reason to favor it if that display technology is a priority.

Do not assume original PS VR games carry over
Sony says original PlayStation VR games are not compatible with PS VR2. If your buying decision depends on keeping access to a PS VR1 library, check each game’s compatibility rather than treating PS VR2 as a drop-in upgrade.

PC VR works on both, but the requirements are not alike
Quest 3: cable or Air Link
Quest 3 supports PC VR through Meta Quest Link by cable or Air Link. This gives you a choice between a wired connection and wireless streaming, rather than requiring the particular adapter-and-DisplayPort arrangement used by PS VR2.

PS VR2: adapter, DisplayPort, and compatible Windows PC
PS VR2 can play SteamVR games on PC, but it requires Sony’s PC Adapter, a DisplayPort 1.4 cable sold separately, Steam, and compatible Windows hardware. Sony’s US support requirements specify Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 64-bit, an Intel Core i5-7600 or AMD Ryzen 3 3100 (Zen 2 or later), at least 8 GB of RAM, a supported dedicated DisplayPort output, DisplayPort 1.4, USB 3.0, and Bluetooth 4.0 or later. Sony recommends an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 or later or AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT or later for best performance. The adapter must connect directly to a USB port on the PC; USB-C DisplayPort output is not compatible with it. Check Sony’s US PC requirements and setup instructions against your exact hardware and the games you plan to run.
PC mode does not preserve every PS5 feature
Sony lists HDR output, eye tracking, headset feedback, adaptive triggers, and controller haptic feedback as unavailable when PS VR2 is used on PC. Basic controller vibration remains. That makes PC compatibility a useful extra, but not a feature-for-feature substitute for PS5 use; see Sony’s PS VR2 PC and PS5 feature comparison.

How the displays compare
Quest 3’s LCD resolution is 2064 × 2208 pixels per eye, with a listed refresh rate up to 120 Hz. PS VR2’s OLED resolution is 2000 × 2040 pixels per eye, with 90 Hz and 120 Hz modes and an approximately 110° field of view. Quest 3 lists a 110° horizontal and 96° vertical field of view.

Compare the full cost, not just the headset
Prices vary by region, retailer, bundle, and date. Meta’s US product listing displayed Quest 3 starting at $599.99 when accessed October 4, 2026; that listing can change. Sony announced a US PS VR2 recommended retail price of $399.99 starting in March 2025, while noting that start dates and bundles varied by country and region. That is a dated RRP, not a current retailer quote. Compare local checkout prices and included bundles rather than treating these figures as a like-for-like current offer.
Also account for hardware you may still need. PS VR2 console play requires a PS5; PS VR2 PC use needs the adapter and a separate DisplayPort 1.4 cable. Quest 3 can run standalone, while PC VR on either headset requires a suitable gaming PC. Sony’s PC Adapter announcement gave an estimated US launch price of $59.99 in 2024, but that historical figure is not a current price quote. Check Meta’s US Quest listing and Sony’s 2025 PS VR2 RRP announcement for the relevant published price context.
Which one should you buy?
- Pick Quest 3 if standalone wireless play, color mixed reality, or the option to use PC VR by cable or Air Link matters most.
- Pick PS VR2 if you own a PS5, want PS VR2’s console game library, and value its OLED display and supported PS5 features.
- For PC VR, compare your actual setup. Quest 3 offers cable and Air Link routes; PS VR2 requires an adapter, DisplayPort 1.4 connection, and compatible Windows PC, with some PS5 features unavailable.
- If you are upgrading from PS VR1, verify your games first. Sony says the original PS VR library is not compatible with PS VR2.
Neither official specifications nor compatibility lists can settle personal fit, facial comfort, motion tolerance, or visual clarity for an individual. If those are decisive, try each headset if you can and check the return policy before purchase.
