Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S can show a Windows 11 desktop in a spatial workspace, including multiple virtual displays. They do not run the full Windows desktop themselves: with a local setup, a nearby Windows PC does the computing; with Windows 365, a Cloud PC does it. The right choice depends on whether you value portable, private screens more than the comfort and clarity of physical monitors.
What a Windows workspace in Quest actually is
Microsoft and Meta’s Mixed Reality Link is the first-party route for viewing and interacting with a nearby Windows 11 PC. Microsoft announced general availability alongside Meta Horizon OS v81 on October 30, 2025; availability and behavior can still depend on current software versions. Microsoft’s announcement describes a private, multi-monitor workstation.
Local Windows 11 PC
The PC supplies Windows, applications, files, and processing. Quest streams the desktop over the local network and provides the spatial display and interaction layer. The PC must be awake and unlocked when reconnecting, and the headset and computer must be able to communicate on the same network or subnet. This is a way to use a Windows PC in VR, not a way to install the full Windows desktop on Quest. Microsoft’s Mixed Reality Link support page documents the connection and requirements.
Windows 365 Cloud PC
In this route, Windows runs on a Microsoft-hosted Cloud PC and Quest connects through the Windows App. A Windows 365 account and an administrator-assigned Cloud PC are required; installing the app or having a Microsoft account alone does not provide one. The session depends on internet quality and service availability. Microsoft describes Windows 365 as a cloud PC service.

Native Quest apps
Quest can run its own browser, note-taking, communication, and other Horizon OS apps. Those are not Windows applications running locally, and they do not make every desktop program available on the headset.
Which Quest headsets are supported?
Microsoft’s current documentation names Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S for Mixed Reality Link and the relevant Windows App workflows. Do not infer equivalent first-party support for Quest 2, Quest Pro, or any headset that can run PC VR; support depends on the specific app and software versions. What you need before connecting
For a local Windows PC
- Windows 11 version 22H2 or newer.
- Supported graphics: Intel integrated graphics on an 8th-generation Core processor with UHD 620 or newer, or equivalent supported hardware; AMD Ryzen 3000-series integrated graphics or newer; Radeon RX 5000 series or newer; NVIDIA GeForce GTX 9-series or newer; or Snapdragon X series or newer for ARM.
- Gigabit network support. Microsoft’s guidance is 5 GHz Wi-Fi minimum and 6 GHz recommended, with 20 MHz channel width minimum and 80 MHz recommended.
- Wi-Fi signal strength of at least 75%, with 90% recommended.
- Inbound network access for ports 8264 TCP, 8265 TCP, and 8266 UDP. Bluetooth Low Energy is recommended.
- A keyboard and mouse for ordinary Windows work. A wired PC can connect if it shares a subnet with the headset and the network allows device-to-device communication.

For Windows 365
- Quest 3 or Quest 3S with internet access to install Windows App from the Meta Quest Store.
- A Windows 365 user account and a Cloud PC assigned by an administrator.
- A sufficiently reliable internet connection for interactive streaming.
Connect Quest to a local Windows 11 PC
- Update Windows 11 and the Quest headset.
- Connect both devices to the same local network or subnet. Prefer 5 GHz or 6 GHz Wi-Fi for Quest; Ethernet for the PC can work if the network permits communication between the wired and wireless devices.
- On the PC, install and launch Mixed Reality Link from the Microsoft Store.
- On Quest, install or open the relevant Windows connectivity app from the Meta Quest Store and follow its pairing prompts.
- When prompted, look at the physical keyboard and select or tap Pair. Approve any connection request shown by Windows or the headset.
- Position the virtual display or displays in the workspace. Use the physical keyboard and mouse for normal typing and pointing.
The expected result is a virtual Windows workspace. Passthrough can keep the physical room visible; an immersive environment can reduce visual distractions. The computer remains the source of the Windows session. Microsoft’s general-availability announcement describes the keyboard pairing flow and workspace.

Connect to Windows 365 with Windows App
- Install Windows App from the Meta Quest Store and open it.
- Complete or skip the introductory tour.
- Open the menu in the upper-left corner and select Sign in.
- Sign in with the account that has an assigned Windows 365 Cloud PC.
- Select the Cloud PC to start the remote Windows session.
Windows App also supports other Microsoft remote Windows services, including Azure Virtual Desktop and Microsoft Dev Box; access depends on the service and account provisioned to you. The app is a client, not a Windows license or free Cloud PC. Microsoft’s Windows App guide lists the supported connection types.
Where a Quest workspace is useful
- Travel and temporary desks: virtual screens can be useful when carrying several physical monitors is impractical.
- Small spaces: the headset can provide a broad workspace without placing several displays on a desk.
- Privacy: virtual screens are not directly visible to nearby people in the way a physical monitor is, though this does not make the device or session inherently secure.
- Focus: an immersive environment can reduce visual distractions, while passthrough keeps the room in view.
- Remote access: Windows 365 can provide a consistent managed desktop from different locations when the organization has provisioned it.
Limits to weigh before relying on it for work
Comfort and ergonomics
A large virtual workspace still requires wearing a headset. Facial pressure, heat, lens fogging, battery charging, and neck strain from poorly placed screens can matter more over a full workday than during a short session. You also need to look at a physical keyboard to type effectively. There is no single dependable battery-life figure for every headset, workload, and software configuration.

Text clarity and display quality
A virtual screen’s apparent size is not the same as its pixel density. Lens alignment, the sharp area of the lenses, streaming compression, and small text all affect legibility. Dense spreadsheets or prolonged code reading may be less comfortable than on a good physical display. Microsoft describes the workstation as high quality, but that description is not a guarantee of a particular rendered resolution or image quality on every setup.
Latency, network, and graphics load
Streaming quality depends on the connection and the PC’s ability to render the desktop. Congested Wi-Fi or weak signal can cause instability or pixelation. Microsoft also warns that three active displays may reduce quality when the PC does not meet graphics requirements; adding displays is not cost-free in graphics or network capacity. Cloud sessions add dependence on internet latency and cloud-service availability.

Collaboration and security
People beside you cannot naturally see or point at the virtual screens, which makes shared desk work less convenient. Local-PC mode is not the same as exposing a computer to the public internet, but network isolation, firewall settings, and endpoint protections still matter. Windows 365 adds organizational identity, cloud data, device-management, and policy considerations. Microsoft’s use of the word “private” describes the workspace experience, not a blanket security guarantee.

Windows 365 Business is a recurring subscription rather than a one-time headset purchase. Microsoft’s page showed promotional listings during the research period of $28 per user per month for 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, and 128 GB storage; $36 for 2 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, and 128 GB; and $56 for 4 vCPU, 16 GB RAM, and 128 GB. Those are promotional figures, not universal or guaranteed current prices; geography, tax, dates, plan availability, and billing terms can change them. Troubleshoot common connection problems
Quest cannot find the PC
- Confirm both devices are on the same SSID or subnet and not on a guest network.
- Check that the PC is awake, unlocked, and running Mixed Reality Link.
- Make sure wireless client isolation is disabled and the network permits wired-to-wireless communication if the PC uses Ethernet.
- Check firewall or antivirus rules and confirm the required inbound ports are allowed.
Streaming connection closes
Microsoft identifies firewall or proxy restrictions as common causes of a message that the connection was closed because a streaming connection could not be established. On a managed network, ask its administrator to review the required traffic rather than disabling security controls indiscriminately.

- Prefer 5 GHz or 6 GHz Wi-Fi, improve signal strength, and reduce congestion between the router and headset.
- Check whether three displays are active and whether the PC meets the published graphics requirements.
- If the Windows session is on Windows 365, consider whether internet latency or service availability is the limiting factor.
Only one display appears
Check current Horizon OS and Mixed Reality Link versions, PC graphics capability, and whether the selected connection route supports the display arrangement you expect. A driver, policy, or network issue may also restrict the setup. Microsoft confirms multi-monitor capability but does not promise that every configuration will expose the same number of displays at the same quality; its support page specifically cautions that three displays can reduce quality on PCs below the graphics requirements.
