KB5043076 was Microsoft’s September 10, 2024 cumulative security update for Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2. It brought those releases to builds 22621.4169 and 22631.4169, respectively. The end-of-service warning associated with it was about particular Windows versions and editions—not the end of Windows 11 as a product. In 2026, KB5043076 is obsolete; most users should install the latest update offered for a supported Windows version instead.

KB5043076 at a glance

Detail What Microsoft listed
Release date September 10, 2024
Update type Cumulative security update with quality improvements
Windows 11 22H2 result OS build 22621.4169
Windows 11 23H2 result OS build 22631.4169
Servicing-stack component Included servicing-stack improvements identified as KB5043937

Microsoft listed the update for Windows 11 22H2 and 23H2 editions. The 23H2 release included the improvements in the 22H2 package. A servicing-stack update improves the Windows component that installs updates. Microsoft’s KB5043076 notice provides the original release details.

What the update changed

Security and quality maintenance

Microsoft described KB5043076 as addressing Windows security issues and supplying quality improvements. Its support notice does not provide a complete vulnerability-by-vulnerability map for this Windows 11 package, so the broader September 2024 Microsoft security bulletin should not be read as a list of issues all fixed by KB5043076.

Microsoft’s September 2024 security release bulletin discusses vulnerabilities across multiple Microsoft products and Windows versions. For example, CVE-2024-43491 concerned Windows Update and affected Windows 10 version 1507 LTSB/IoT LTSB, rather than ordinary current Windows 11 installations. Other vulnerabilities highlighted in the wider release included CVE-2024-38014, CVE-2024-38217, and CVE-2024-38226. Their appearance in the monthly bulletin alone does not establish that each was fixed by KB5043076.

Windows Installer repair and UAC

The 22H2 package included improvements from preview update KB5041587. One documented change affects some Windows Installer application repairs: User Account Control (UAC) prompts for credentials. Scripts or deployment workflows that assumed a repair would proceed without an interactive elevation prompt may need adjustment. Microsoft advised application owners to add the Shield icon where full administrator access is required.

For IT teams, the practical issue is not simply that users may see a different prompt. Test application-repair scripts and deployment workflows under the permissions and interaction conditions they will encounter. The 23H2 release included the 22H2 improvements; Microsoft listed no additional issues for that release.

Linux dual-boot issue

Microsoft documented a known issue for some Windows/Linux dual-boot configurations. After enabling the relevant dual-boot setup, Linux might fail to boot and display an SBAT-related security-policy error. Dual-boot users should consult the known-issue guidance on Microsoft’s KB5043076 page before applying this historical package to an affected system.

What the end-of-service alert meant

Windows 11 is the product family; 22H2 and 23H2 are feature-update versions with their own support periods. When a version reaches end of servicing for an edition, it stops receiving normal security updates. That does not immediately disable the PC or mean Windows 11 itself has ended.

Version and edition Support meaning
Windows 11 22H2 Home, Pro, Pro Education, Pro for Workstations, and SE Updates ended October 8, 2024, according to Microsoft’s lifecycle notice.
Windows 11 22H2 Enterprise and Education Continued beyond October 8, 2024; the Home/Pro-family date did not apply to these editions.
Windows 11 23H2 Home and Pro Support has ended by 2026.
Windows 11 23H2 Enterprise and Education Microsoft lists support through November 10, 2026.

Microsoft’s 22H2 lifecycle notice specifies the affected editions and date. Its Windows 11 release information page lists current versions and their support dates. Support periods vary by edition: Home/Pro-family versions generally receive 24 months of servicing, while Enterprise/Education generally receive 36 months.

Installing KB5043076 did not extend a version’s support period, and reaching end of service did not require buying another Windows license. It meant that the affected Windows version would no longer receive normal security updates.

Check your Windows version and install the current update

  1. Press Windows key + R, type winver, and press Enter.
  2. Check the Windows version and OS build shown in the About Windows window. Build 22621.4169 corresponds to 22H2 with KB5043076; build 22631.4169 corresponds to 23H2 with KB5043076.
  3. Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
  4. Install the newest feature and cumulative updates offered for your device, then restart if prompted.
  5. Run winver again after restarting to verify the resulting version and build.

In 2026, do not normally seek out KB5043076 for a personal PC. It is a superseded 2024 update, and a newer cumulative update replaces it on a maintained Windows installation. Current consumer Windows 11 versions are 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1; use Windows Update and Microsoft’s release table to determine what is supported and offered for your device. If Windows Update says the device is current but it remains on an unsupported version, an organization’s update policy may be controlling what is offered; check with the administrator.

When to use the Update Catalog or enterprise channels

Windows Update is normally the right route for a personal device. Microsoft also listed Windows Update for Business, Microsoft Update Catalog, and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) as distribution channels for KB5043076. Catalog downloads are chiefly useful when an administrator needs an offline package or a deployment system requires manual import.

  • Update Catalog: Search for KB5043076 in the Microsoft Update Catalog.
  • Package selection: Match the Windows version and CPU architecture (x64 or ARM64), as well as the deployment context. A package for the wrong architecture or release is not appropriate.
  • Managed devices: Windows Update for Business, WSUS, Intune, or another organization policy may determine when updates appear.

A missing KB5043076 listing often simply means a newer cumulative update is already installed or being offered. Do not use third-party “KB download” sites as a substitute for Microsoft’s distribution channels.

Removal limitations for administrators

Microsoft said the combined servicing-stack and cumulative update package cannot be removed with wusa.exe /uninstall, because the servicing-stack update cannot be removed from the system. If removal of the LCU is necessary, Microsoft directs administrators to identify its installed package name with DISM /online /get-packages and use the appropriate DISM /Remove-Package operation. The package identity must be taken from the affected machine; do not guess it.
