Meta Muse is different from a basic chatbot because it can work through connected services and take actions on a user’s behalf. Meta says Muse’s conversations and virtual-machine data are not shared with its advertising systems, but it also says sanitized interaction trajectories are used to train new model checkpoints by default unless users opt out. Those are separate uses of data, and neither statement alone answers every question about storage, review or deletion.
This comparison reflects consumer-service information available as of October 4, 2026. The strongest current evidence here covers Muse and the model-training controls described by OpenAI and Anthropic; it does not establish a complete privacy audit or a definitive winner across every assistant.

What makes Muse’s privacy question different?
A conventional chatbot mainly receives what someone types or uploads into a conversation. Meta presents Muse as a personal agent: it can use a browser, work with services a user connects, and continue tasks after the app is closed. Meta says users choose which services to connect and what permissions to grant, can change or disconnect that access, and must approve sensitive actions such as sending email or making a purchase. Muse also provides an audit trail, according to Meta’s September 8, 2026 launch announcement.

Its safety explanation says files users put in the VM, files Muse creates or uses, its memory, and connected-service credentials are stored there. Credentials are kept in an isolated container within the VM, and VM data is continuously backed up. These are Meta’s descriptions of its system, not an independent security verification.

Greater reach can make an agent more useful, but it also makes permission choices consequential. A connected account may expose more than the text a user deliberately pastes into a prompt. Review each service and permission before connecting it, especially for email, calendars, messages, social accounts and payment-related services.

Does Muse use conversations to train AI?
According to Meta, yes: back-and-forth conversations, tool calls and handoffs between subagents—together described as “trajectories”—can help train new model checkpoints. Meta says it sanitizes trajectories to remove key personally identifiable information before training and offers a switch in Muse settings to opt out.

That control concerns training use. It should not be read as proof that information is never stored, never reviewed by a person, or removed from training that has already happened. Meta’s explanation does not establish those broader outcomes. Check the current Muse settings if you want to change the training preference, because interface labels and availability can change.
How Muse’s data use differs from Meta’s broader AI policies
Meta’s broader generative-AI privacy explainer says public Facebook and Instagram posts, including photos and text, were used to train the models underlying its generative-AI features. It says private posts were not used, and that private messages with friends and family are not used unless someone in the chat chooses to share them with Meta AI. The same explainer says information shared in interactions with generative-AI features may be used to improve products and for other purposes.
These broader statements should not be collapsed into Muse’s narrower claims about VM data, advertising systems and trajectory training. They address different data contexts and purposes.

What ChatGPT and Claude’s training controls do—and do not—say
ChatGPT
OpenAI’s consumer documentation describes a setting to turn off model improvement for new conversations. Temporary Chat is not used to train models. Those controls do not establish that a conversation is never stored or reviewed. OpenAI’s documentation also describes special treatment for feedback users submit, so consider what you include when sending feedback. Use OpenAI’s current settings and documentation rather than relying on a remembered interface label.
Claude
Anthropic’s consumer privacy guidance lets users adjust whether their data may be used to improve Claude and says Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude. Anthropic also draws a timing distinction: changing the preference stops future use of previously stored chats and coding sessions in future training runs, but does not remove data from training already started or from models already trained.
These controls are not interchangeable. The available information describes different categories and timing, so a simple “training off” comparison does not establish equal storage, review or deletion practices.

What App Store privacy-label counts can tell you
A Surfshark comparison of Apple App Store privacy disclosures for 13 AI chatbots, reported by TechRadar in 2026, counted these disclosed data types:
| Assistant | Data types disclosed, out of 35 |
|---|---|
| Muse | 31 of 35 (Surfshark, 2026) |
| Meta AI | 33 of 35 (Surfshark, 2026) |
| Gemini | 24 of 35 (Surfshark, 2026) |
| ChatGPT | 17 of 35 (Surfshark, 2026) |
These are counts of disclosed App Store categories—not measurements of how much data is collected, how sensitive it is, how long it is retained, whether it trains a model, or how effective a control is. They do not establish that ChatGPT is the most private service overall, or that Muse has the greatest privacy risk across every meaningful dimension. The cited comparison does not provide a Claude count.
What a reported Muse permission incident does—and does not—show
Tom’s Hardware reported that journalist Jason Aten said Muse appeared to sync a local Messages database and surfaced context from messages, despite his saying he had not granted permission. This is a reported incident, not proof that every user or device has the same exposure, and it does not by itself settle the technical cause. It is a reason to examine granted permissions carefully and follow credible reporting for any further investigation.

Meta itself acknowledges a broader agent-safety limitation: “Prompt injection remains an open problem in the industry — and Muse will sometimes make mistakes.” That warning matters for agents that browse or act on external content: permission review can limit access, but it cannot guarantee that an agent will interpret every instruction safely.
How to make a practical choice
- If you want connected-app actions: Muse’s agent model may be useful, but inspect each connection and permission before granting access. Start with the least sensitive service and verify what is available in the current app.
- If your priority is model-training choice: review the current training control for the specific service and account you use. For ChatGPT, note the distinction between the model-improvement setting and Temporary Chat; for Claude, note the distinction between future training runs and training already started.
- If your priority is keeping information away from advertising systems: Meta makes a specific claim about Muse conversations and VM data not being shared with Meta ad systems, while also noting possible indirect ad effects from activity elsewhere. Equivalent claims for the other assistants are not established here.
- If you need a business or regional comparison: do not assume consumer settings or launch availability apply to business plans or your location. Confirm the current terms and product settings for your account.
Before using any assistant with sensitive information, check its connected-app list, permissions, training preference, deletion options and account type. A setting that limits future model improvement is not the same as a promise of no storage or retroactive erasure.
