Meta has not confirmed that it is abandoning a cloud business. Mark Zuckerberg reportedly said the idea was “definitely on the table” in May 2026, while Meta’s September Muse announcements describe an AI agent—not a public cloud service for customers. Still, prioritizing Muse could be a good strategic trade: Meta can build on its consumer reach and software ecosystem rather than compete primarily by selling computing capacity. That is an argument about strategic fit, not proof that Muse will be more profitable.
What Meta has—and hasn’t—decided
In May 2026, TechRadar Pro reported that Mark Zuckerberg said a cloud-computing business was “definitely on the table” at Meta’s annual shareholders’ meeting, in the context of excess data-center capacity. That establishes that the option was discussed; it does not establish a completed plan or launch. The sources available do not show that Meta has since canceled the idea. What Meta has announced is a growing Muse product family. On September 29, 2026, Meta introduced Muse for Small Business, an expansion of its personal agent with business-oriented skills and connections to other services. That is a software product announcement, not an announcement that Meta will sell general-purpose cloud infrastructure. Meta’s Muse for Small Business announcement

A cloud business would mean selling computing capacity to organizations. Muse instead aims to help people complete tasks using an AI agent connected to business tools and accounts. Meta’s September announcement lists integrations with Asana, Box, Canva, Dropbox, Figma, Granola, HighLevel, Intuit QuickBooks, Klaviyo, Lovable, Notion, Shopify, Slack, Stripe, Zoom, and Facebook and Instagram business accounts.

That connector strategy gives Muse a practical route into existing work: a small-business owner might use the connected context to manage communications, ecommerce, payments, bookkeeping, or design. Meta says Muse can make proactive suggestions, such as flagging emails that need replies and drafting responses. Whether customers adopt it at scale remains unproven, but the product is aimed at problems users already handle through familiar services—not at persuading them to buy computing infrastructure.
Its value proposition is easier to explain to small businesses
Many small firms do not need to choose a cloud provider to see the potential appeal of an assistant that can help with routine work. Meta quoted Tom Mulholland, owner of Mulholland Grocery in Malvern, Iowa, saying he works about 65 hours a week and wants to spend more time on the work that makes his business money. That is one owner’s testimonial published by Meta, not a statistic about small-business owners generally. It illustrates the problem Muse is meant to address without demonstrating how much time or money the product saves across businesses.

Meta’s AI investment can support products, not just infrastructure sales
Meta’s earlier Muse Spark announcement, dated April 8, 2026, said the model was built for Meta’s products, would power Meta AI, and would be available in private API preview to selected partners. That indicates a product and partner strategy around Muse, but it does not amount to a public cloud-service launch. Meta’s Muse Spark announcement
Likewise, Meta described personal Muse on September 8 as an agent running on its own dedicated computer in the cloud. Cloud infrastructure is therefore part of Muse’s architecture. Hosting an agent this way is different from offering outside customers a general-purpose cloud platform. Meta’s personal Muse announcement

The trade-off: an agent is not a cloud business
The two strategies would serve different customers and sell different things. A cloud business would sell infrastructure access to organizations; Muse sells—or may eventually monetize—agent capabilities for people and businesses. Cloud infrastructure could draw on Meta’s data-center capacity, while Muse depends on useful software, reliable connections to other services, and user confidence.
| Question | Potential cloud business | Muse for Small Business |
|---|---|---|
| What is offered? | Computing capacity or infrastructure access; the reporting describes this as an option under consideration, not a launched Meta service. | An AI agent with business skills and named software and account connectors, announced by Meta on September 29, 2026. |
| Who is it for? | Organizations buying computing capacity. | People and small businesses using Muse and connected services. |
| What is established? | Zuckerberg reportedly said the idea was “definitely on the table” in May 2026; no completed plan or launch is established. | Meta announced its intended product features and connector list; the announcement does not establish adoption or commercial success. |
| What would show it is succeeding? | The available sources provide no comparable revenue, adoption, cost, or return figures. | The available sources provide no comparable revenue, adoption, cost, or return figures. |
The distinction matters: Meta can operate cloud infrastructure for its own products without becoming a cloud provider for outside customers. And an agent that is strategically appealing is not automatically a better business. The available sources do not provide comparable financial or adoption data to establish which route would deliver stronger returns.

What users should know about Muse today
Meta says Muse is free for most needs and offers subscription plans for people who want more. The September 29 announcement does not specify subscription prices or detailed plan limits, so users should check Meta’s current product information before relying on a particular feature or cost. Meta also states: “You’re in control: nothing publishes, sends, or spends without your approval.” Treat that as Meta’s description of how the product is intended to work, not as an independently tested guarantee. Businesses considering an agent connected to email, payments, or operational tools should review the available permissions and approval controls before enabling those connections.
Why we think the trade could make sense
For Meta, Muse has a clearer connection to its existing products and user relationships than a speculative move into infrastructure sales. Its small-business version also has a concrete use case: coordinating work across tools that owners already use. That makes focusing on Muse a plausible strategic choice if Meta believes it can make the agent useful, trustworthy, and commercially sustainable.
But “could make sense” is the right level of certainty. The cloud option was reported as under consideration, not as a business Meta has now ditched. Muse has announced features and integrations, not demonstrated market success. Axios’s October 5, 2026 account of business-agent competition notes that distribution could matter in the emerging agent market; that framing supports the importance of Meta’s reach, but it does not prove Muse will win.
