Meta announced Meta AI for Quest in July 2024 as an experimental assistant that could replace the headset’s Voice Commands, respond to spoken questions, and use Quest 3’s Passthrough view to answer questions about nearby objects. The announcement described an initial rollout in the United States and Canada; it does not establish that the feature is available to every Quest 3 owner today.
What Meta AI can do on Quest 3
In its July 23, 2024 announcement, Meta said Meta AI would let Quest users control the headset hands-free, ask questions, get real-time information, and check the weather. Meta described the assistant as replacing the existing Voice Commands system.

Meta also announced Meta AI with Vision in Passthrough: users could ask about things visible in their physical surroundings. Its examples included asking about an object or an outfit, checking weather for a trip, and requesting nearby restaurant recommendations. Those were examples of intended functions in Meta’s announcement, not independent tests of how reliably the assistant handles them.

Quest 3 is a mixed-reality headset with full-color Passthrough, the view that lets you see your surroundings while wearing the headset. Meta’s announcement positioned that view as the context for asking Meta AI about nearby things. The feature is therefore different from a voice assistant that only responds to spoken commands without referring to the user’s environment.

How to turn on Meta AI or “Hey Meta”
Meta’s July 2024 announcement says the assistant would replace Voice Commands, but does not provide a current, step-by-step Quest 3 setup path or establish that a particular activation phrase is available to all users. Because availability may be staged and features can change while experimental, check Meta Quest’s current support documentation and the settings shown on your own headset before following instructions for a specific menu or wake phrase.

- Check whether Meta AI or updated voice controls are offered for your headset and account.

- If the option is absent, do not assume your headset is broken: the 2024 announcement alone does not prove current eligibility for every owner.
Where Meta AI on Quest 3 is available
Meta announced an initial experimental rollout in the United States and Canada. That is a statement about the rollout announced on July 23, 2024, not a complete or current availability list. The announcement does not establish a 2026 country, language, age, account-type, or Horizon OS-version matrix.

What “experimental” means for owners
Meta explicitly described the rollout as experimental. That means the announcement should be read as a description of an early release, not a promise that every announced capability is generally available or unchanged. Meta did not publish performance figures in that announcement, so it does not establish response speed, answer accuracy, battery impact, or how consistently Vision can identify objects.
The announcement also does not provide a complete technical privacy specification for Quest AI. Review the current permissions and microphone or camera controls presented by Meta before enabling voice or Passthrough features; do not assume a privacy guarantee that Meta has not stated in the cited announcement.

Quest 3 hardware and buying context
Meta reduced the US price of the 512GB Quest 3 to $499.99 in September 2024, according to its Quest announcement. That is a historical US price, not a current quote: headset pricing, storage models, and retailer stock can change.
If buying specifically for Meta AI with Passthrough, confirm the feature is available to your account and region before treating it as a guaranteed reason to purchase. Compatible head straps, carrying cases, prescription lens inserts, and battery straps are possible accessory categories, but verify that any particular product is explicitly compatible with Quest 3.
