In Messages on iOS 27, tap a word or information suggestion above the keyboard to insert it. For a gray inline completion, press the Space bar. To use a full suggested reply, tap it, review the draft, and send it when you’re ready. Apple calls these features Predictive Text, inline predictions, and Smart Reply—not one feature named “one-tap suggestions.”
Choose the suggestion you want to use
| What appears | What to do | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| A suggested word, emoji, or information item above the keyboard | Tap it | Inserts the suggestion into your message. Predictive Text is separate from Apple Intelligence. Apple’s iOS 27 Predictive Text guide |
| Gray text completing what you are typing | Press the Space bar to accept it; keep typing to reject it | Accepts or dismisses an inline prediction. Apple’s iOS 27 Predictive Text guide |
| A complete suggested response | Tap the reply, review the draft, then tap Send if you want to send it | Places a Smart Reply draft in the text field. It requires Apple Intelligence. Apple’s Messages and Apple Intelligence guide |
Insert a suggested word or information item
- Open a conversation in Messages and tap the text field.
- Start typing and look for suggested words, emoji, or information above the onscreen keyboard.
- Tap the suggestion you want to use. Apple says a suggested word is followed by a space automatically; entering punctuation removes that space. Apple’s iOS 27 Predictive Text guide
Some suggestions depend on what you type. For example, Apple says typing “I’m at” followed by a space may offer your current location, and “My number is” followed by a space may offer your phone number. These are examples, not guaranteed suggestions. Apple’s iOS 27 Predictive Text guide

Accept or reject a gray inline completion
An inline prediction appears as gray text within your message rather than as a separate option above the keyboard. Press the Space bar to accept it, or continue typing to reject it. If you accept the wrong inline prediction, Apple’s guide says to tap Delete and then the word being edited to change it. Apple’s iOS 27 Predictive Text guide
Use a full suggested reply
- Open the Messages conversation and tap the text field.
- Tap a suggested reply shown in the keyboard.
- Read the drafted response in the text field and edit it if needed.
- Tap Send only when you’re ready to send the message.
This is Smart Reply, an Apple Intelligence feature—not the same as tapping a predicted next word. Apple’s Messages and Apple Intelligence guide

Why a suggestion may be missing
- Smart Reply is unavailable: Apple says it requires Apple Intelligence. Its iOS 27 guidance lists an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 16 model or later; availability also depends on language and region. Check Apple’s current compatibility and feature availability information.
- Predictive Text or inline predictions do not appear: Check whether Predictive Text is on in Keyboard Settings. Predictive typing and inline predictions may not be supported in every language. Apple’s iOS 27 Predictive Text guide
- Spelling corrections still appear after Predictive Text is off: That can be expected; Apple notes that corrections may continue to appear.
