Mesh Router Distance: Place Nodes Close Enough to Keep a Strong Link

There is no single ideal mesh-router spacing. Start within about two rooms, place the satellite partway toward the weak area, and verify its link in your system’s app.

There is no universal best distance between mesh routers. A practical starting point is to place a wireless node no more than about two rooms from a working node, then use your system’s app or signal indicator to check the connection. Keep nodes closer if walls, floors, or other obstructions weaken the link.

How far apart should mesh routers be?

For a wireless mesh system, start with the satellite roughly halfway between the main router and the area where coverage is weak. Keep it within about two rooms of the router or another working node. Google recommends this two-room guideline for its Wifi devices, while Linksys suggests two rooms or one floor and advises limiting obstacles. Those are placement rules of thumb, not a guaranteed distance for every home.

Manufacturers use different terms: a mesh router may be called a node, point, or satellite. The right spacing depends on the home’s layout and construction, the nodes’ locations, and where you need Wi-Fi. Google describes placement as an “inexact science.” Google Nest Help’s placement guidance and Linksys’s mesh connectivity FAQs offer starting points, but the system’s own link check should decide whether a location works.

Why a numeric distance is not universal

ASUS recommends no more than 10–15 m between nodes for multiple mesh packs. That is ASUS guidance, not an industry-wide standard. In its X700 user guide, Inseego gives a 5 GHz mesh range of up to 50 feet and estimates that one wall reduces range by roughly 10 feet. Both figures apply to the named manufacturer or product; they should not be treated as a spacing guarantee for other systems or homes.

Where to place each node

Start with the main router

Place the primary unit in an open, visible, central location where the modem connection allows it. Elevate it where practical. Google recommends open placement for the primary router; avoid hiding it inside a cabinet or behind a television.

Position the satellite before the weak area

Put a wireless satellite partway toward the room or area that needs better coverage, rather than at the far edge of the dead zone. It needs a useful connection to the main router or another node to relay traffic effectively. Use the two-room guideline as an initial placement, then check the actual connection.

Reduce obstacles and interference

Keep nodes away from walls where possible, large metal objects, cabinets, appliances, and other obstructions. TP-Link identifies walls, metal, microwaves, Bluetooth devices, and USB 3.0 devices as possible sources of interference or signal loss. Linksys also flags televisions, glass, refrigerators, fish tanks, and microwaves. The impact depends on the materials and layout between the nodes.

For TP-Link Deco units specifically, the placement guide recommends putting satellites at the same height as the source unit and describes 1–1.5 ft off the floor as ideal. This is Deco-specific advice, not a requirement for all mesh systems. See the TP-Link Deco placement guide.

  • With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.

How to check whether the spacing works

After moving a node, check the connection in the manufacturer’s app or by using its mesh test or indicator. Do not assume that a signal threshold from one brand applies to another.

  • Google: Run a mesh test and adjust the node’s position if the result indicates a weak connection.
  • TP-Link Deco: Check signal strength in the app; TP-Link recommends two bars for its system.
  • Linksys: Its guidance treats an RSSI below -70 dBm as a poor signal. This threshold belongs to Linksys’s system guidance.

If the link is weak, move the satellite closer to its source node, reduce the number or impact of barriers, or try another open location. A strong connection between nodes matters because the satellite must receive traffic reliably before it can extend coverage. Linksys notes that strong inter-node signals are critical for speed and coverage.

When wired backhaul changes the placement decision

With Ethernet backhaul, nodes do not have to relay traffic over the wireless node-to-node link. This removes that wireless link as the same placement constraint, though each node still needs to be positioned where it can serve the intended area. TP-Link says wired backhaul is more stable and faster than wireless, and ASUS describes Ethernet as its best-performing backhaul option. Check that your mesh system supports wired backhaul and that Ethernet is available at the intended locations. See ASUS ROG Support’s whole-home mesh guidance and the TP-Link Deco placement guide.

  • Obstacles: Consider the number and type of walls or floors, as well as nearby metal objects and appliances.
  • Coverage target: Favor a position partway toward the weak area, not a spot where the satellite has already lost a reliable connection.
  • Backhaul: Account for wireless link quality or, where supported and available, Ethernet.
  • Compatibility: Any added node must be compatible with the existing mesh system. Compatibility is not automatic across brands.

If repositioning and reducing obstructions do not help, consider a compatible additional node or Ethernet backhaul if your system and home support it. Adding another node is not a substitute for checking the connection between nodes.
