Menagerie is a zoo-building, light-questing and exploration modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1 using Forge. The listed client file is Menagerie2.4.zip; the matching dedicated-server download is MenagerieRelease2.4ServerFiles.zip. Install the same Minecraft version, Forge loader and pack release on every client, then deploy the published server files rather than assembling a separate mod list.

What Menagerie is and which version to use

Menagerie is built around creating and managing a zoo while exploring, building and completing light quests. The project listing categorizes it as exploration, quests, adventure/RPG and Vanilla+. Its own description is: Light-questing, building and exploration pack about building a ZOO! 🐾🪴

The project is owned by jamono and targets Minecraft 1.20.1 with the Forge loader. That version and loader combination is the compatibility baseline for both single-player and multiplayer. A Fabric profile, another Minecraft release or a manually edited collection of mods is not an equivalent installation unless the author specifically documents it.

The current files shown in the public listing are the client archive Menagerie2.4.zip and the server archive MenagerieRelease2.4ServerFiles.zip. The listing showed 137,949 downloads during a 2026 page crawl and an update date of October 20, 2025; those figures describe that page snapshot and can change.

Those acknowledgements explain the pack’s source and contributor relationships; they are not independent testing or a guarantee of performance.

Choose the right way to play

There are three practical arrangements. Decide before installing so that the person hosting and every person joining use the same files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Option Best for Administration Control and cost considerations
Client-only play Solo building, learning the pack or testing a world Lowest; install the client pack and launch locally No server setup or recurring hosting charge, but friends cannot join unless a separate multiplayer service is added
Self-hosted dedicated server Players who want control over files, backups, permissions and upgrades Highest; you manage the runtime, operating system, network access, updates and backups Uses your own hardware or a rented machine; recurring cost depends on that machine and connection
Managed hosting A group that wants an always-on server without maintaining the operating system Lower; the provider supplies a control panel and server availability Recurring provider charge and provider-specific limits; CurseForge documents a hosted-server workflow powered by Shockbyte when a matching server pack is available

Whichever option you choose, compare the same factors: Minecraft and Forge compatibility, how the published server pack is installed, effort to recover a failed update, control over backups and configuration, expected player capacity, and the support available when a mod or loader fails. Menagerie’s public listing does not state a minimum RAM figure, player limit, startup flags or a required port, so those details must come from the downloaded archive and the host’s documentation.

Install Menagerie on a client

Use a supported launcher that can import a CurseForge modpack archive. The labels differ between launchers, but the required result is always a Minecraft 1.20.1 profile running Forge with the Menagerie 2.4 files.

  1. Obtain the published client file. From the official Menagerie project listing, download Menagerie2.4.zip. Keep the original filename so you can identify the release when troubleshooting.
  2. Create or select a 1.20.1 profile. In the launcher, choose Minecraft 1.20.1. Do not let the launcher silently select a newer release because the pack is not identified for that version.
  3. Select Forge for that profile. The loader must be Forge, paired with Minecraft 1.20.1. A profile that says 1.20.1 but uses Fabric, or Forge paired with a different game version, is still incompatible.
  4. Import the ZIP as a modpack. Use the launcher’s import or add-pack function and select Menagerie2.4.zip. Avoid unzipping individual mods into an unrelated profile; the pack’s configuration and dependency versions belong together.
  5. Allow the launcher to finish downloading dependencies. Keep the profile’s game directory separate from other modpacks. This prevents another pack’s configuration, shader, mod or saved world from being mistaken for a Menagerie file.
  6. Launch once before inviting anyone. Wait for the title screen, create a temporary test world and verify that the pack reaches the game rather than stopping during mod loading. Close the game normally so the launcher can finish writing configuration files.
  7. Record the exact profile details. Note the displayed Minecraft version, Forge version and pack release. Send those details to friends along with the server address if you will use a dedicated server.

Every player should install the matching client release. Do not update one player’s mods by hand, remove a mod to make a warning disappear or copy a configuration from another pack unless the project author documents that change. A world can appear to load while still producing missing-content or registry errors later.

What to do when the launcher reports an incompatibility

  • Check the game version first. It must read Minecraft 1.20.1, not merely a nearby 1.20 release.
  • Check the loader second. Select Forge for the same 1.20.1 profile. A Fabric profile cannot load the published Forge pack.
  • Check the imported file. Confirm that you selected Menagerie2.4.zip, not the server archive or a file from another release.
  • Remove accidental manual edits. Re-import into a clean profile if you added, removed or replaced mods. This is usually faster and more reliable than trying to identify every changed dependency.
  • Read the first error, not only the final crash line. The earliest message normally identifies the wrong loader, game version or missing dependency. Keep the log if you need to ask the pack author or launcher support for help.

CurseForge’s compatibility guidance is the relevant rule here: the modloader and game version must be compatible. Menagerie’s listing identifies that combination as Forge on 1.20.1.

Prepare a dedicated Menagerie server

The supported starting point is MenagerieRelease2.4ServerFiles.zip, the server-pack file shown with the project listing. It is preferable to building a server by copying the client’s mods folder because a server pack can include the appropriate server-side files, scripts and configuration.

  1. Create a clean server directory. Use a new folder dedicated to this Menagerie instance. Do not extract over an existing world or another modpack’s directory.
  2. Download the server archive. Save MenagerieRelease2.4ServerFiles.zip from the official file listing. Preserve the release name in your notes so future backups and updates are traceable.
  3. Extract all files. Unzip the archive directly into the server directory. Look for the included startup script, README or setup notes; those files are the authority for the pack’s exact launch command.
  4. Install or use the expected Forge runtime. Follow the archive’s instructions for the Forge server runtime. Do not substitute a Fabric server or a different Minecraft release. If the archive includes a Forge installer or a prepared runtime, use that method rather than guessing at arguments.
  5. Run the supplied startup script once. The first run may create configuration files and stop while requesting acceptance of Minecraft’s EULA. The exact script name and Java arguments are not stated in the public listing, so use the files included in your download.
  6. Accept the EULA only after reading it. If the server creates an EULA file, open it, review the terms and set the acceptance value as instructed before restarting. The server will not complete startup until this requirement is satisfied.
  7. Start again and watch the console. A successful launch should progress through mod loading and reach a ready state without a repeating crash loop. Keep the console output from this first successful run as a baseline.
  8. Create a backup before opening the server. Stop the server cleanly, copy the world and configuration directories to a separate location, then restart. This gives you a known-good restore point before players create permanent changes.
  9. Record the connection details. Note the server address and the port shown by the server configuration or hosting panel. The public Menagerie listing does not publish a required port, so do not assume a value from another pack.
  10. Test locally or with one player. Connect with a client using the matching Menagerie 2.4 profile. Confirm that the player can join, load the world and perform a simple block placement before inviting the rest of the group.

The archive, rather than the project summary, determines the exact RAM recommendation, Java invocation, startup flags, port and any configuration differences between client and server. Those values are not exposed in the public listing excerpt. Read them from the downloaded server files before changing memory settings or writing a hosting-panel command.

Self-hosting checklist

  • Use a machine that can remain online for the hours your group expects to play.
  • Keep the server directory outside automatic cloud-sync folders that might lock or partially copy world files.
  • Allow the Java server process through the operating system firewall only as needed.
  • If friends connect from outside your home network, configure the router or network service for the port specified by the server files; do not publish a port that the pack does not use.
  • Use an allowlist or the server’s permission tools if you want to restrict who can join.
  • Stop the server from its console before copying a world. Copying live region files can produce an unusable backup.
  • Keep at least one backup away from the machine running the server, and label it with the pack release and date.

Use managed hosting with the published server pack

Managed hosting removes much of the operating-system and network administration. CurseForge’s hosted-server documentation says its workflow is powered by Shockbyte and can deploy a modpack when a matching server pack exists. For Menagerie, the matching file is the published MenagerieRelease2.4ServerFiles.zip.

  1. Choose a hosting plan that permits Forge on Minecraft 1.20.1 and lets you upload or select a custom server pack.
  2. Use the provider’s modpack or server-pack importer and select the Menagerie server archive. Do not select only the client ZIP if the panel offers a dedicated server-pack option.
  3. Wait for the installation to finish, then inspect the generated startup command and server version in the panel.
  4. Read the archive’s README and compare the panel’s Java, memory and port settings with those instructions. The public project listing does not provide those values.
  5. Start the instance, accept the EULA through the panel or generated file as required, and wait for a ready state.
  6. Make a panel backup before the first group session and test a connection with one correctly installed client.

Hosting is a convenience choice, not a different Menagerie edition. Players still need the same 1.20.1 Forge client pack. A provider’s one-click catalog can lag behind a project update, so verify that it installed release 2.4 and not an older cached build.

Client, self-hosted and managed setups compared

Decision factor Client-only Self-hosted dedicated server Managed hosting
Initial setup Install one Forge profile Extract archive, install runtime, configure EULA and network Import archive in a provider panel and configure the instance
Availability Only while the player runs the game Only while your machine and connection are online Usually designed for continuous availability, subject to the provider
File and backup control Local world files Full access to world, configs, scripts and backups Depends on panel access, plan limits and provider policies
Recurring cost No server-hosting charge Electricity, hardware or rented-machine cost Recurring hosting fee
Capacity information for Menagerie Not applicable to a dedicated server Not stated in the public listing; test your hardware after reading the archive instructions Not stated in the public listing; depends on the selected plan and actual workload
Technical support Launcher and pack documentation Your responsibility plus community or pack support Provider support for its panel and machine, with modpack support still dependent on compatibility

Bring friends into the same world

Before sharing an address, send every player a short installation checklist. A server can be healthy while a client fails because one person selected a different loader or pack release.

  1. Install Minecraft 1.20.1.
  2. Install or import the Forge profile.
  3. Import Menagerie2.4.zip.
  4. Launch once and reach the title screen.
  5. Confirm that the displayed profile and pack release match the host’s notes.
  6. Use the server address and port supplied by the host, not a value copied from an unrelated tutorial.

If a player is rejected with a mod-list, registry or missing-content message, stop changing files at random. Compare that player’s profile with a known-working client, then reinstall the clean client archive if necessary.

Troubleshoot the most common failures

The game crashes before the title screen

Verify Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge are selected together. Re-import the client ZIP into a clean profile and remove manually added mods. If the crash persists, retain the launcher log and the first error message; it is more useful than a screenshot of the final line.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The server stops during startup

Confirm that you extracted the server archive completely and are using its supplied script or README. Check the EULA state, Forge runtime and game version. Do not guess RAM flags because the public listing does not state a recommendation; use the archive’s instructions. A repeated stop at the same mod-loading stage usually indicates a missing, altered or incompatible server file.

Clients cannot connect

First compare versions and loaders on both sides. Then verify that the address and port are the ones shown by the running server. For self-hosting, check the local firewall and router configuration; for managed hosting, check the panel’s online status and connection address. A connection refusal is a network or availability symptom, while a mod-list mismatch is a client/server file symptom.

One player receives a missing-mod or registry error

Have that player close the game, remove the altered profile and import Menagerie2.4.zip again. Ensure the server was also deployed from MenagerieRelease2.4ServerFiles.zip. Do not copy the server’s configuration over a client profile unless the pack instructions explicitly require it.

The world appears damaged after an update

Stop the server, restore the most recent backup and confirm which pack release created it. Do not roll a live world backward or forward repeatedly without a backup. Keep the old server directory intact while testing the new release so that a failed upgrade can be reversed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Updating Menagerie safely

Treat a pack update as a coordinated change, not as a single-player mod download. The listing identifies release 2.4 as the current client and server files described here; a later release should be evaluated from its own notes.

  1. Announce a maintenance window and prevent players from joining during the change.
  2. Stop the server cleanly and make a dated backup of the world, configuration and server files.
  3. Install the new client and server archives in separate test directories first.
  4. Read any README, changelog or migration instruction included with the new archive.
  5. Start the test server, connect with the new client profile and inspect existing builds and animals.
  6. Only after the test succeeds, replace the production files according to the archive’s instructions.
  7. Tell every player which Minecraft version, Forge loader and pack release to install before reconnecting.

Never assume that a higher pack number permits a higher Minecraft version. The version and loader remain explicit compatibility requirements unless the project listing says otherwise.

What is and is not published about performance

The public listing supplies the Minecraft version, Forge loader, client and server filenames, description, category and download count. It does not publish a minimum RAM requirement, recommended startup flags, a standard port, a player-capacity benchmark or an independent performance test. Consequently, there is no defensible universal memory number or guaranteed player count to copy into a setup tutorial.

Use the server archive’s own instructions for memory and startup settings, then monitor the actual machine while a small group explores and builds. Increase resources only when logs and observed pauses justify it, and preserve a backup before changing several variables at once.
