Mellanox SX6036 Rail Kit Part Numbers: MSX60-SKIT vs. MSX60-BKIT

The Mellanox SX6036 uses MSX60-SKIT for standard-depth 60–80 cm racks and MSX60-BKIT for short-depth 40–60 cm racks. Learn how to measure, verify contents and interpret IBM part-number leads.

For a Mellanox SX6036, the standard-depth rail-kit part number is MSX60-SKIT. The short-depth alternative is MSX60-BKIT. Choose by measuring the rack and confirming the switch configuration: the Mellanox SX60XX hardware manual (revision 1.4) specifies MSX60-SKIT for 60–80 cm racks and MSX60-BKIT for 40–60 cm racks.

Which SX6036 rail kit do you need?

Part number Intended rack depth Mellanox fitment rule
MSX60-SKIT 60–80 cm Use for standard-depth systems
MSX60-BKIT 40–60 cm Use for short-depth systems; the manual also permits it for short systems when either kit is suitable

The manual’s rule is: “Standard depth systems should be mounted using the standard rail kit; short systems can be mounted using either of the rail kits.” Because the model name alone does not reveal the installed switch depth, measure the rack and verify the hardware before ordering.

How to check compatibility before buying

Measure the rack

  1. Measure the usable distance between the front and rear rack mounting planes.
  2. Use MSX60-BKIT for a 40–60 cm rack or MSX60-SKIT for a 60–80 cm rack, subject to the switch-depth rule.
  3. If the measurement is near 60 cm, confirm the switch depth and the seller’s exact kit rather than relying on the SX6036 label.

Confirm the switch configuration

Standard-depth SX60XX systems should use the standard kit. Short systems may use either kit, but a listing that only says “SX6036 rails” does not establish which depth or revision is included.

What the Mellanox kit should contain

The SX60XX hardware manual describes the rail kit as:

  • Two rails
  • Two rail slides
  • Two system slides
  • 16 recessed 6-32 flat-head screws, including extras
  • 10 cage nuts
  • 10 M6 pan-head bolts

Ask for photographs or an itemized inventory when buying used equipment. Missing slides, fasteners or cage nuts can make an apparently correct part number unusable.

Does an SX6036 normally include a rail kit?

The manual says SX60XX packaging normally includes one rail kit, except for half-width systems. Therefore, a second-hand SX6036 without rails may be incomplete; its absence does not prove that the model originally shipped without a kit. Verify whether the seller is offering the complete rail-and-fastener set.

IBM replacement numbers: useful leads, not confirmed equivalents

IBM service lists show platform-level rack-mount references for different SX6036 contexts:

IBM number Listed context What is established
90Y3774 MSX60xx/MSX10xx Enterprise Rack Mount Kit for an SX6036 PSE context IBM service-list mapping only; interchangeability with MSX60-SKIT or MSX60-BKIT is not established
90Y3784 MSX60xx/MSX10xx iDataPlex Rack Mount Kit for an SX6036 oPSE context IBM service-list mapping only; interchangeability with the Mellanox OPNs is not established

Treat 90Y3774 and 90Y3784 as configuration-specific replacement leads. Confirm whether the switch is PSE or oPSE, whether it is intended for an Enterprise rack or iDataPlex installation, and that the offered assembly includes the required rails, slides and fasteners. Do not describe either IBM number as a proven substitute for the Mellanox kits without confirmation from the seller or service documentation.

Ordering checklist

  • Record the exact switch model and configuration.
  • Measure rack depth in centimetres.
  • Choose MSX60-SKIT for standard-depth 60–80 cm installations.
  • Choose MSX60-BKIT for short-depth 40–60 cm installations; short systems may use either kit under the Mellanox rule.
  • Confirm that both rails, all slides, screws, cage nuts and M6 bolts are included.
  • For IBM-labelled parts, verify the PSE/oPSE and rack-platform context before purchase.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The OEM part numbers are MSX60-SKIT for standard-depth 60–80 cm racks and MSX60-BKIT for short-depth 40–60 cm racks. Measure first and verify the complete hardware set, especially for used SX6036 switches.
