Meesho is primarily a value-focused, asset-light marketplace; Amazon combines its own retail inventory with a third-party marketplace; and Flipkart is positioned by a January 8, 2026 JM Financial report as a more commission-led marketplace focused on branded supply and convenience. The important differences are not just app features or product selection. They are who supplies inventory, which services generate revenue, how orders are fulfilled, and how each company reports sales.
The short answer
Meesho, Amazon and Flipkart all connect shoppers with sellers, but they do not have the same economic model.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Meesho: Its core reported business is a Marketplace segment, alongside New Initiatives. Company materials describe revenue from services provided around marketplace transactions, including order fulfillment, advertising and seller insights. The company cautions that its reported revenue is not the total value of goods traded on the platform.
- Amazon: It operates a hybrid model. Amazon sells products from inventory it owns or controls and records those sales as product revenue. It also hosts third-party sellers and generally records only its net share of those transactions as service revenue. Seller fees, fulfillment and shipping, advertising and Prime subscriptions are among its service-revenue categories.
- Flipkart: The most direct three-way comparison available here is JM Financial’s report dated January 8, 2026. It characterizes Flipkart as closer to a commission-led marketplace, with seller, logistics or fulfillment and advertising fees. The report places Flipkart nearer branded supply and convenience than Meesho. Flipkart’s own pages did not provide enough extractable detail in the cited material to verify every part of that characterization directly.
These are relative positions, not rigid rules. A product can be branded or unbranded on any of the platforms, and a seller’s actual costs depend on category, service choices, returns, shipping and advertising. The comparison is most useful when it explains how money and inventory move through each platform.
What “business model” means in an online marketplace
Gross merchandise value is not the same as revenue
When shoppers place orders, the total value of those goods is commonly discussed as gross merchandise value (GMV). A platform’s accounting revenue can be much lower when it acts as an agent and keeps only a fee or service share. Conversely, a retailer that buys inventory and resells it can report the full selling price as product revenue, while also bearing the cost of that inventory.

That distinction is essential in this comparison. Meesho’s filings explicitly warn that reported revenue is not the total value of merchandise traded through its platform. Amazon’s reporting separates product sales from service sales for the same reason. A marketplace’s revenue line therefore cannot be read as its transaction volume without knowing the accounting model and the period being measured.
Three questions reveal the model
- Who supplies or owns the inventory? Inventory ownership determines who carries purchasing, storage and obsolescence risk.
- What does the platform charge for? A commission is only one possible charge. Fulfillment, shipping, advertising, subscriptions and seller analytics can also be monetized.
- Who performs fulfillment? The answer affects delivery speed, cost, control over the customer experience and the platform’s revenue opportunities.
How Meesho makes money
A marketplace-first structure
Meesho’s company materials identify Marketplace as its core reported segment and also disclose New Initiatives. The marketplace connects consumers and third-party sellers rather than presenting the business primarily as a retailer holding its own broad inventory.
JM Financial’s January 8, 2026 comparison describes Meesho as asset-light and says it does not hold inventory. That description should be read as an explanation of the platform’s principal model, not as a claim that no operational asset or service provider exists anywhere in its ecosystem. The key point is that sellers, rather than Meesho as a conventional retailer, are the source of the merchandise.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Meesho’s filings describe marketplace revenue from services around seller transactions. The cited categories include:
- Order fulfillment and related logistics services;
- Advertising sold to sellers seeking visibility; and
- Seller insights or other tools that support merchants.
The JM Financial report also presents zero commission as a central part of Meesho’s positioning. “Zero commission” does not mean that every order is cost-free for a seller. It means the platform’s headline transaction commission can be zero while paid logistics, fulfillment, advertising or other services remain part of the economics. A seller must therefore examine the complete cost of serving an order, not just a commission percentage.
Why the model can support long-tail supply
The report positions Meesho toward value-conscious shoppers, lower-ticket purchases and long-tail or unbranded supply. An asset-light marketplace can list many sellers and products without purchasing each item in advance. That can widen assortment while shifting inventory risk to merchants. It can also make quality, consistency, delivery and returns more dependent on seller execution and the platform’s controls.
Those are broad tendencies, not a description of every Meesho category or customer. A branded item can appear on Meesho, and a value-oriented shopper can use another marketplace. The model describes the emphasis, not an exclusive boundary.

Consider an illustrative order without assuming any particular price or fee rate. A seller lists a product, a shopper pays for it, and the seller remains the source of the merchandise. Meesho may earn from a fulfillment or shipping service, a seller’s advertising campaign or a seller-facing insight product. The total amount paid by the shopper is not automatically Meesho’s revenue, and the seller’s service costs cannot be inferred from a “zero commission” label alone.

How Amazon makes money
A hybrid retailer and marketplace
Amazon is structurally different because it combines first-party retail with third-party marketplace services. It can buy or otherwise hold inventory, list that inventory for sale and perform the retail transaction itself. At the same time, independent sellers can offer products through Amazon, with Amazon providing marketplace, fulfillment, advertising and other services.
Amazon’s 2025 Form 10-K states: “Generally, we recognize gross revenue from items we sell from our inventory as product sales and recognize our net share of revenue of items sold by third-party sellers as service sales.” This sentence explains why two orders of similar value can appear differently in Amazon’s accounts: one may be a gross product sale, while the other is represented by Amazon’s net service share.
Amazon’s principal revenue categories in this comparison
- Product sales: Revenue from items sold from Amazon’s inventory, recognized gross under the filing’s description.
- Third-party seller services: Amazon’s net share of merchandise sold by outside sellers.
- Seller fees: Charges associated with using the marketplace.
- Fulfillment and shipping: Services that move or deliver seller inventory and can produce service revenue.
- Advertising: Paid visibility and related promotion for sellers or brands.
- Prime subscriptions: Membership revenue tied to the broader Amazon customer proposition.
The categories overlap operationally. For example, a third-party seller may pay marketplace fees, choose fulfillment, purchase advertising and sell to a Prime member in one transaction. The filing’s categories describe how revenue is classified, not a promise that every order uses every service.
What first-party inventory changes
Owning inventory gives Amazon direct control over purchasing, selection, pricing decisions and fulfillment for those items, but it also exposes Amazon to inventory costs and the risk of unsold stock. A third-party order transfers merchandise ownership and much of the inventory risk to the seller, while Amazon earns service revenue and may still provide logistics, advertising and membership-related benefits.
Amazon’s 2025 Form 10-K is a global filing. Its revenue categories explain Amazon’s worldwide reporting model and should not be presented as India-specific figures or as a precise description of Amazon India’s local mix.
How Flipkart is positioned
What the January 2026 comparison says
JM Financial’s report dated January 8, 2026 places Flipkart closer to a commission-led marketplace than to Meesho’s zero-commission positioning. It describes revenue opportunities from seller fees, logistics or fulfillment and advertising. The same report characterizes Flipkart as more oriented toward branded supply and convenience, relative to Meesho’s value and long-tail emphasis.
The report also compares fulfillment approaches. It presents Meesho with a seller-to-consumer shipping model and contrasts that with more centralized or dedicated fulfillment approaches associated with Amazon and Flipkart. That is an analyst’s comparative framing, not a complete official description of every Flipkart logistics program.

Flipkart corporate and seller pages retrieved for this comparison did not expose enough substantive text to verify detailed segment definitions, revenue-recognition policies or a current fee schedule directly. This evidence difference matters. Amazon’s hybrid accounting explanation comes from an SEC-filed Form 10-K, and Meesho’s segment and service descriptions come from company filings and investor-relations materials. Flipkart’s role in this article is supported primarily by the analyst comparison.

Fulfillment is more than delivery speed
Meesho’s seller-to-consumer emphasis
In the comparison supplied by JM Financial, Meesho’s logistics model is associated with shipping from sellers toward consumers. The platform can still coordinate or monetize fulfillment and delivery services, but the merchandise is not described as being held in a conventional retailer-owned inventory pool. This arrangement can support a broad seller base while making seller packaging, dispatch and product consistency important parts of the customer experience.
Amazon’s service layer
Amazon explicitly lists fulfillment and shipping among service-revenue categories. A third-party seller can therefore use Amazon not only as a storefront but also as an operational service provider. The same marketplace transaction can generate seller-service revenue even when Amazon does not own the product.
Flipkart’s reported positioning
JM Financial presents Flipkart as using a more centralized or dedicated fulfillment approach than the seller-to-consumer model it attributes to Meesho. The practical implication is greater platform involvement in inventory movement and delivery execution, but the cited first-party material does not establish a complete current network design or fee table.
Why fulfillment changes marketplace economics
Fulfillment affects more than the parcel’s final-mile journey. It can determine who pays for storage, sorting, packing, returns, failed deliveries and customer support. It also creates a service that a platform can charge for independently of a sales commission. A comparison that looks only at commission percentages misses this layer.
Assortment, price positioning and customer intent
Meesho: value and breadth
JM Financial’s framing associates Meesho with value-conscious shoppers, lower-ticket purchases and long-tail or unbranded products. A long-tail marketplace can be attractive when customers prioritize price, variety or access to smaller sellers over standardized branded assortments. The trade-off may be greater variation in product information, packaging and delivery performance, depending on seller quality and platform controls.
Amazon and Flipkart: convenience and branded supply
The same report places Amazon and Flipkart more toward convenience and branded supply in relative terms. That does not mean either platform lacks inexpensive or unbranded products. It means the analyst sees their competitive emphasis as more closely tied to dependable shopping journeys, recognizable brands and fulfillment convenience than Meesho’s central value-commerce proposition.

Marketplace catalogs overlap. A shopper may compare the same brand across all three platforms, while a small seller may list unbranded products on a platform known for branded goods. Category, geography, seller reputation, delivery promise and promotions can matter more than the platform’s broad positioning for a particular order.

How sellers should interpret the models
If your business competes mainly on low price or unusual selection
Meesho’s reported marketplace orientation and the analyst-described value focus may fit a seller whose proposition depends on affordable products, long-tail demand or a wide catalog. The seller should still calculate fulfillment, returns, advertising and other service costs because zero commission does not eliminate operating expenses.
If you need a hybrid retail and marketplace environment
Amazon’s model is relevant when a seller wants access to marketplace demand while operating alongside a platform that also sells its own inventory. The presence of first-party retail can affect assortment, pricing dynamics and customer expectations. Amazon’s service menu also creates options for fulfillment and advertising, each with its own economics.
If branded presentation and convenience are central
JM Financial’s description of Flipkart points toward a marketplace environment oriented more toward branded supply and convenience than Meesho. Sellers evaluating that fit should verify current commercial terms, fulfillment requirements and category policies directly, because the cited first-party pages do not provide a complete, independently verified fee schedule here.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A practical checklist before choosing a platform
- Estimate total contribution after shipping, fulfillment, returns, packaging, advertising and platform fees—not commission alone.
- Check whether the platform or the seller controls inventory, dispatch and customer-service steps for the chosen category.
- Separate the platform’s transaction volume from its reported revenue when comparing scale.
- Ask whether your products need branded merchandising, low-price discovery or specialized long-tail search.
- Confirm current terms for your country, category and seller status; the broad model does not determine an individual contract.
Why headline figures should not be compared casually
Different periods and geographies
No verified, directly comparable three-company statistic was established for this comparison. Meesho’s investor-relations page identifies headline scale measures for the last twelve months ended June 30, 2026. Amazon’s 2025 Form 10-K is global. Flipkart figures in a different entity, geography or period would not create an apples-to-apples comparison.
Meesho’s prospectus contains concrete segment and revenue-recognition detail, but its quantitative period ends in 2025 and its model may evolve. A 2025 Meesho figure, a global Amazon FY2025 figure and a separately defined Flipkart number should not be combined into a single ranking without matching definitions.
Different accounting definitions
Even identical order values can produce different reported revenue because Amazon generally records its own inventory sales gross and third-party marketplace transactions at its net service share. Meesho warns that its revenue is not the merchandise value traded. A marketplace comparison should therefore label every figure by metric, period, geography and accounting definition.
What a sound comparison can say
The evidence supports a structural comparison: Meesho is marketplace-service-led and value-oriented; Amazon is hybrid, with product and service revenue; and Flipkart is described by JM Financial as commission-led, logistics-enabled and more convenience or brand oriented. It does not support a definitive ranking by size, profitability, order volume or growth across all three.
Three illustrative order flows
Value marketplace order
A small seller lists a low-priced, less-branded item. The shopper pays the seller’s listed price. The platform connects the parties and may earn from fulfillment, shipping support, advertising or seller insights. The seller bears responsibility for the merchandise, while platform revenue is a service stream rather than the full merchandise value.
Best Value
Amazon first-party order
Amazon purchases inventory and sells an item from that inventory. Under the 2025 Form 10-K explanation, the sale is generally recognized gross as product revenue. Amazon also carries the commercial risks associated with buying and holding that stock.
Amazon or Flipkart third-party order
An outside seller supplies the product. The platform can earn seller or commission-related fees and may provide fulfillment, shipping or advertising. For Amazon, the filing says the platform generally recognizes its net share as service revenue. For Flipkart, the seller, logistics or fulfillment and advertising fee structure is the characterization provided by JM Financial, not a fully reproduced first-party accounting policy.
Common misconceptions
“Zero commission” means zero selling cost
No. It describes a commission position, while fulfillment, shipping, advertising, returns and other seller services can still carry costs.
Recommended Free Tools
All three platforms are simply retailers
No. Meesho is described primarily as a marketplace, Amazon combines retail and marketplace operations, and Flipkart is positioned in the cited analyst report as a commission-led marketplace.
Platform revenue equals customer spending
No. Meesho explicitly distinguishes revenue from the value of goods traded, and Amazon separates gross product sales from net third-party service revenue.
A broad positioning applies to every product
No. Value, branded supply, convenience and long-tail assortment are relative tendencies. Individual categories and sellers can differ substantially.
An analyst description is the same as an audited disclosure
No. Amazon’s hybrid revenue explanation comes from an SEC filing, and Meesho’s segment description comes from company materials. Flipkart’s comparative positioning here comes mainly from JM Financial’s January 8, 2026 report and should be labeled accordingly.

Bottom line for readers
Choose the comparison lens that matches your question. For inventory ownership and accounting, Amazon is the outlier because it combines first-party retail with third-party services. For a marketplace-service model centered on value commerce and seller monetization beyond commissions, Meesho is the clearest example. For a commission-led, branded-convenience positioning, JM Financial places Flipkart between those ideas and closer to Amazon than Meesho on assortment and fulfillment emphasis.
The most reliable conclusion is structural rather than numerical: seller fees are only one part of marketplace economics. Fulfillment, logistics, advertising, subscriptions, inventory ownership and accounting presentation determine how each platform creates and reports value.
