In medieval England, monastery was the broad term for a religious house or community. An abbey was ordinarily headed by an abbot or abbess, while a priory was headed by a prior or prioress. Many priories were dependent on an abbey, but some were independent; size alone does not determine the difference.
What do monastery, abbey, and priory mean?
These terms do not describe three separate building designs. “Monastery” is the umbrella term for a religious house or community. “Abbey” and “priory” are more specific institutional names, associated especially with the title of the community’s head and, in some cases, its relationship to another house.

Historic England’s Asset Type Terms defines a priory as a monastery governed by a prior or prioress. Its record for Monkwearmouth Anglo-Saxon monastery and medieval priory also reflects the range of people and functions a religious site could encompass. Communities included monks, canons (priests), and sometimes lay brothers; a monastery did not necessarily house only male monks.
How does an abbey differ from a priory?
Leadership
The clearest distinction is the head’s title: an abbey was ordinarily led by an abbot or abbess, and a priory by a prior or prioress. The terminology applied to women’s religious houses as well as men’s. English Heritage notes that medieval nunneries were frequently priories led by prioresses, while abbeys could also be women’s houses under an abbess (Nuns in medieval England).

Independence and dependence
Many English priories were dependent houses—sometimes described as daughter houses or cells—associated with an abbey. But “priory” did not always mean subordinate: autonomous priories existed too. Peter Balmer’s discussion for the Medieval Studies Forum of the Surrey Archaeological Society explains that distinctions varied with autonomy, religious order, and local history (What distinguished abbeys from priories in medieval England?). The introduction to The Heads of Religious Houses: England and Wales, 940–1216 likewise distinguishes autonomous abbeys, autonomous priories, and dependent priories.
Size is only a clue
Priorities were often smaller than abbeys, but that is a tendency, not a definition. A priory could have considerable standing, and a house’s classification depended more on its institutional status and leadership than on the size of its buildings or community. English Heritage’s overview of Abbeys and Priories discusses the variety of these religious houses.

What did a medieval monastery look like?
There was no single architectural plan that made a site an abbey or a priory. A religious house might include a church, communal accommodation, and buildings for work, but layouts and surviving remains varied by time, place, and religious order. The labels primarily describe the institution, not a fixed arrangement of rooms or buildings.

| Term | Meaning in medieval England | Typical head | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monastery | Broad term for a religious house or community | Varied | Could include communities of monks, nuns, or canons, and sometimes lay brothers. |
| Abbey | A more specific kind of religious house | Abbot or abbess | Could be a men’s or women’s house. |
| Priory | A monastery governed by a prior or prioress | Prior or prioress | Often dependent on an abbey, but some priories were autonomous; smaller size is not a decisive test. |
Why the distinction needs a regional qualification
This explanation describes patterns in medieval England, not a universal rule for every medieval European region or religious order. Titles and institutional status varied across orders and changed over time, so a particular site’s history matters more than a simple assumption based on its name.
