For professional-service coding, consider AAPC’s CPC; for physician-based coding, AHIMA’s CCS-P; for experienced coding across inpatient and outpatient records, AHIMA’s CCS; and for an early-career starting point, AHIMA’s CCA. If your goal is billing operations rather than coding, AAPC’s CPB is the billing-focused option. None guarantees a job, salary, or remote work.
How to choose a medical billing or coding certification
Start with the job setting in local postings, then compare its requested credential with your experience and the exam’s scope. “Best” is a fit question: these certifications come from different organizations and are designed for different work. A certification is an industry credential, not the same thing as a course-completion certificate or an academic degree.

- Professional services coding: AAPC’s CPC is designed around coding professional services.
- Physician-based coding: AHIMA’s CCS-P is aimed at physician offices, group practices, multispecialty clinics, and specialty centers.
- Inpatient and outpatient coding: AHIMA’s CCS is intended for experienced coding professionals working across those records.
- Early-career coding: AHIMA’s CCA is an entry-level option with a high-school diploma requirement.
- Billing operations: AAPC’s CPB focuses on billing, not the same coding scope as CPC.
Certification may be preferred or required by some employers, but education and hiring requirements vary by position, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Check current job listings in your area before paying for a course or exam.

Which credential matches each role?
| Credential | Best fit | Experience and exam focus |
|---|---|---|
| CPC — Certified Professional Coder | Professional-service coding | AAPC says the exam covers CPT, HCPCS Level II, and ICD-10-CM. Candidates who have not met the experience requirements may hold the CPC-A apprentice designation. AAPC CPC guidance |
| CPB — Certified Professional Biller | Billing operations | AAPC describes CPB preparation as billing-focused, with only light coverage of coding. Its CPB and CPC certification exams are separate. AAPC billing and coding overview |
| CCA — Certified Coding Associate | Early-career coding | AHIMA requires a high-school diploma and recommends, but does not require, coding experience, an approved coding program, or relevant foundational coursework. AHIMA CCA |
| CCS — Certified Coding Specialist | Experienced coding across inpatient and outpatient records | AHIMA recommends qualifying combinations of education, coding experience, or another credential. AHIMA CCS |
| CCS-P — Certified Coding Specialist—Physician-based | Physician offices, group practices, multispecialty clinics, and specialty centers | AHIMA positions it for experienced outpatient coders or health information professionals and recommends relevant experience or qualifying credentials and experience. What course or certification should you start with?
If you are new to coding
CCA is a reasonable credential to investigate first if you meet its high-school diploma requirement and want an early-career coding credential. AHIMA recommends foundational training or experience, but its page describes those as recommendations rather than prerequisites. Compare that path with local entry-level postings: employers may ask for different education, training, or credentials.

If you want to code professional services
Look at CPC when the work involves professional-service coding and the relevant code sets are CPT, HCPCS Level II, and ICD-10-CM. AAPC says candidates who have not fulfilled the full experience requirement may carry the CPC-A designation. Its guidance describes qualifying course hours and Practicode as pathways that can reduce the remaining experience requirement; review current details with AAPC before enrolling.
If you already have coding experience
Consider CCS if you work with inpatient and outpatient records and want a credential aimed at experienced coders. CCS-P is a more specific fit for physician-based outpatient settings. AHIMA recommends several pathways for both, based on combinations of related education, experience, coursework, or other credentials; verify the current eligibility guidance for the credential you choose.

If your target is billing rather than coding
CPB is the billing-focused choice. AAPC distinguishes it from CPC: CPB preparation emphasizes billing and touches coding lightly, while CPC preparation focuses on coding. The exams are separate, so completing preparation for one should not be treated as earning the other.

CCA
AHIMA lists a 105-question exam: 90 scored questions and 15 pretest questions, with two hours allowed. The high-school diploma is required; coding experience, an approved program, or relevant foundational coursework are recommendations. Confirm the current exam details on AHIMA’s CCA page.
Rank #3
CCS and CCS-P
AHIMA lists 107 questions for CCS, including 97 scored questions and 10 pretest questions, with four hours allowed. Its CCS guidance recommends pathways that include two years of related coding experience or specified coursework plus one year applying codes. CCS-P is also intended for experienced practitioners; consult its page for current recommended experience and credential pathways. Exam formats and eligibility details can change, so check CCS guidance and CCS-P guidance before applying.
CPC and CPC-A
AAPC’s CPC exam covers professional-service coding with CPT, HCPCS Level II, and ICD-10-CM. A candidate who has not met the full experience requirement can hold the apprentice designation. AAPC’s current rules explain qualifying preparation and experience routes for removing it; review those rules directly with AAPC.
Check codebook rules before scheduling an AHIMA exam
For AHIMA’s CCA, CCS, and CCS-P exams delivered on or after May 1, 2026, AHIMA requires the applicable 2026 codebooks from the list for that specific exam. The titles differ by credential. Candidates without the correct required books will not be admitted and will forfeit the exam fee, according to AHIMA’s CCA materials guidance. Match each book title and edition to your exam and test date, and verify the exam-specific list with AHIMA before buying; do not assume one codebook set works for every exam.
What can you expect from the career outlook?
National labor statistics describe occupations, not the pay or hiring outcomes of individual certification holders. BLS reports the following U.S. figures:
Best Value
| Occupation | Median annual pay | Projected growth | Annual openings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medical records specialists | $51,140 in May 2025 | 8% from 2025 to 2035 | About 14,000 per year on average over 2025–35 |
| Health information technologists and medical registrars | $68,020 in May 2025 | 16% from 2025 to 2035 | Not stated by BLS on the cited page |
These are BLS occupational estimates, published in 2026, not certification-specific salary surveys. Medical records specialists include work interpreting documentation and coding diagnoses; the health information technologist and medical registrar group covers broader responsibilities and may involve higher education. Neither figure predicts what a beginner, certified coder, biller, or remote worker will earn. See the BLS pages for medical records specialists and health information technologists and medical registrars.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Identify the work setting in the jobs you would actually apply for: professional services, physician-based outpatient, inpatient/outpatient records, or billing operations.
- Note which credentials those employers require or prefer, and whether they also specify education or experience.
- Compare the issuer’s current eligibility rules and exam scope with your background; distinguish recommendations from requirements.
- Confirm exam format, codebook editions, fees, and maintenance requirements on the issuer’s current page before purchasing preparation materials or booking.
- Choose preparation suited to the exam you intend to take. A course can build knowledge, but course completion is not the same as earning a certification.
