MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro vs Snapdragon 8 Elite: Which Chip Is Better?

Dimensity 9600 Pro is newer, but published claims do not directly compare it with the original Snapdragon 8 Elite. Here is what phone buyers should weigh.

There is no verified real-world winner yet. The Dimensity 9600 Pro is the newer platform, announced in September 2026, while Qualcomm announced the original Snapdragon 8 Elite in October 2024. MediaTek publishes newer memory and storage support and strong improvements over its own previous chip, but those figures are not a direct comparison with Snapdragon 8 Elite. For a phone buyer, the handset’s sustained performance, heat, battery life, cameras, software and local availability matter more than a spec-sheet verdict.

First, make sure you are comparing the right Snapdragon

This comparison is between MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro and the original Snapdragon 8 Elite. Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and later generation-branded chips are separate products. A September 2026 comparison that includes Dimensity 9600 Pro reports figures against Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, not the original chip, so it cannot settle this matchup. TechPP’s comparison identifies that different pairing.

The launch dates also differ: MediaTek announced Dimensity 9600 Pro on September 15, 2026, describing it as a 2 nm flagship SoC and its first-wave 2 nm smartphone chip; Qualcomm announced Snapdragon 8 Elite on October 21, 2024. These are the manufacturers’ launch descriptions. MediaTek’s announcement and Qualcomm’s launch release provide the dates and claims.

Why a chip-only verdict would be premature

No matched, independently tested retail-phone comparison of Dimensity 9600 Pro and the original Snapdragon 8 Elite was verified. The available third-party comparison uses Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 instead. There is therefore no supported basis here for declaring one chip faster in sustained gaming, cooler, longer-lasting on battery or better in general use.

A useful head-to-head test would identify the exact phone models and regional variants, use the same benchmark versions and settings, repeat runs under consistent ambient and battery conditions, and include sustained-load results. Without those controls, a short peak-score comparison could miss throttling and differences caused by the handset itself.

What to check when choosing between phones

  • Sustained speed and heat: Look for repeated or long-duration tests of the exact models, especially if you play demanding games or record video for extended periods.
  • Battery life: Prefer comparable whole-phone tests over a chip-maker’s efficiency claim. Battery capacity, display and software also affect endurance.
  • Cameras and video: Platform capabilities do not guarantee a particular camera setup or recording mode. Check the phone’s supported modes and reviews of its image processing.
  • Software and AI: Confirm which features and models are available on the specific device and in your region, and consider the phone maker’s update support.
  • Exact variant and availability: Verify the processor in the regional model you can actually buy. Qualcomm’s partner list at the 2024 launch does not establish which phones remain available now. Qualcomm’s launch announcement.
  • Price: Compare the actual phones at current local prices; no current retail price or inventory comparison for this exact pairing is established here.

Verdict: choose the better-tested phone, not the newer chip name

Dimensity 9600 Pro is the newer platform on paper and lists LPDDR6 and UFS 5.0 support, but those advantages do not prove that a phone using it will outperform a Snapdragon 8 Elite phone in the ways you care about. Until matched tests of retail phones using these exact chips are available, make the decision on the specific handset’s sustained performance, thermals, battery, camera implementation, software support, regional variant and price.
