MediaMTX YouTube Streaming on Ubuntu: Install and Configure

A practical Ubuntu setup for MediaMTX, from choosing a binary or Docker to testing a local RTMP path and configuring a separate publisher for YouTube RTMPS.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MediaMTX can receive and route a stream on your Ubuntu machine, but publishing a stream to MediaMTX is not the same as sending it onward to YouTube. Set up the local MediaMTX endpoint first, then configure the encoder or relay that performs the separate YouTube publishing step with the RTMPS URL and stream key from your YouTube Live Control Room.

How the MediaMTX-to-YouTube workflow fits together

MediaMTX describes itself as a live media server and proxy that can publish, read, proxy, record, and play back real-time audio and video. For this workflow, it is the local receiving server; your publishing client and YouTube are separate parts of the chain.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Install and run MediaMTX on Ubuntu.
  2. Publish a test stream from OBS or FFmpeg to a MediaMTX path, such as rtmp://localhost/mystream.
  3. Configure the onward publisher or relay to send media to the RTMPS URL and stream key shown in your YouTube Live Control Room.

The official MediaMTX publishing pages document the first publishing hop into MediaMTX, while YouTube documents how to obtain its RTMPS destination. They do not provide a single official, integrated MediaMTX-to-YouTube forwarding recipe. Do not assume that pasting YouTube’s public ingest address into an arbitrary MediaMTX YAML field will make forwarding work: identify which program performs the second hop and use that program’s documented configuration.

Choose an Ubuntu installation method

MediaMTX documents both a standalone executable and Docker. The right choice depends on how you intend to run and maintain the service, not on a published performance comparison.

Method When it may suit you What to know
Standalone binary A straightforward trial or a direct executable-based setup. Download the release bundle matching Linux and your machine’s architecture, extract it, and run ./mediamtx.
Docker A deployment where container isolation and repeatability fit your operations. Follow the official Docker instructions. MediaMTX recommends Docker for production environments; that is not a benchmark or a guarantee of suitability for every workload.

Use the current official MediaMTX Releases page and the installation documentation. Select the bundle for your operating system and CPU architecture rather than copying a version-specific download command from an older tutorial. The documentation is rolling, so its instructions and available release assets can change.

Start MediaMTX and publish a local test stream

For the standalone installation, run the executable from the extracted release directory. The publishing client connects to the MediaMTX instance on the same machine using the documented example address rtmp://localhost/mystream; the resulting stream path is /mystream.

Using OBS

  1. Start MediaMTX and leave it running while you test.
  2. In OBS, open Settings, then Stream.
  3. Choose Custom… as the service.
  4. Set the server to rtmp://localhost/mystream and leave the stream key empty for this local path.
  5. Apply the settings and start streaming in OBS. Consult MediaMTX’s OBS guide if your OBS version presents different controls.

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is another documented RTMP publishing client. Configure it to publish to the MediaMTX RTMP address and path, rtmp://localhost/mystream. The exact input and encoding arguments depend on the source you are capturing; the MediaMTX publishing page lists client options, but this setup does not establish a single required camera, microphone, capture device, or encoding preset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For client-specific details, use the official RTMP clients documentation. This local publishing test confirms that your client can send a stream to MediaMTX; it does not, by itself, send anything to YouTube.

Get the YouTube RTMPS destination and key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream you intend to publish.
  2. Open Stream settings.
  3. Use the lock icon to reveal the RTMPS URL, then copy the displayed Stream URL and stream key into the encoder or relay that will publish to YouTube.
  4. Check that the selected destination begins with RTMPS if you intend to use secure ingest. YouTube notes that the displayed default may be an ordinary RTMP URL.

Use the values provided for your own stream rather than a tutorial’s hard-coded destination. Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your YouTube stream. YouTube explains the RTMPS settings in its RTMPS help page.

Configure the second publishing hop deliberately

Once a client is publishing to MediaMTX, a separate component must publish the media to YouTube. Depending on your design, that may be an encoder or relay configured to read from MediaMTX and publish to the YouTube RTMPS destination. Follow the chosen component’s documentation for how it reads the MediaMTX stream and how it accepts YouTube’s URL and key.

Do not confuse MediaMTX’s own RTMP listener settings with YouTube’s remote ingest settings. MediaMTX documents RTMPS support for its server-side RTMP connections when TLS is configured; that concerns connections to your MediaMTX server, not the credentials or configuration for YouTube ingest. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. The two endpoints must be configured in the program responsible for each connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Validate MediaMTX configuration changes

If you edit a MediaMTX YAML configuration file, validate it with the executable before relying on it:

./mediamtx --validate-conf=/path/to/mediamtx.yml

Replace the path with the actual file you want to check. MediaMTX documents configuration through a file, environment variables, or its Control API; use the official configuration guide for the current options. Validation checks configuration syntax and validity; it does not prove that an unrelated client or relay is correctly forwarding to YouTube.

Troubleshoot by identifying which hop failed

  • OBS cannot connect to MediaMTX: confirm MediaMTX is running on the Ubuntu machine and that OBS uses the local example server address and path. Check that the stream key is empty for the documented OBS local-path setup.
  • MediaMTX receives a stream, but YouTube stays offline: the local publishing hop alone does not publish to YouTube. Check that a separate upstream publisher or relay is configured to read the MediaMTX stream and send it to YouTube.
  • YouTube rejects the destination: retrieve the RTMPS URL and stream key again from the correct Live Control Room stream. Verify that the URL is RTMPS if secure ingest is intended, rather than assuming the displayed default is RTMPS.
  • A YAML edit prevents startup: run ./mediamtx --validate-conf=/path/to/mediamtx.yml against the file you edited, then check the current configuration guide for supported names and values.
  • The stream fails after an update or on a different Ubuntu machine: check the current MediaMTX release assets and select the bundle matching that system’s architecture. Avoid assuming a fixed release version or x86-64 package.
  • You are unsure where to put YouTube’s public RTMP address: first identify the process that performs the second hop. The community question is discussed in a MediaMTX discussion, but a discussion is not a substitute for configuration documentation for your selected relay.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps prerecorded videos live around the clock, rather than a self-hosted MediaMTX routing setup, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and includes the first day free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
