For a single always-on YouTube feed that mainly needs a relay, MediaMTX is the clearer starting point: its official documentation gives a direct RTMPS forwarding example for YouTube. Choose OvenMediaEngine (OME) when you need its documented transcoding, broader ingest and playback options, or Origin-Edge architecture. Neither server guarantees that a 24/7 broadcast will stay live end to end; the source, host, network, YouTube connection, and monitoring all matter.
What each server is built to do
MediaMTX: a media server and proxy
MediaMTX describes itself as a ready-to-use, zero-dependency live media server and proxy for publishing, reading, proxying, recording, and playback. Its documentation covers publishing over RTMP and explicitly identifies OBS as a publishing client. It also describes serving always-available streams while the publisher is offline. That is useful for a configured path, but it does not mean a missing source keeps supplying content or that the YouTube connection cannot fail. MediaMTX introduction · Publishing documentation

OvenMediaEngine: more workflow and delivery options
OME documents inputs including WebRTC, SRT, RTMP, RTSP, and MPEG-2 TS, and WebRTC and LL-HLS delivery. The project also describes an embedded live transcoder, adaptive-bitrate workflows, and Origin-Edge clustering. Those capabilities make it a better fit when the design really needs transformations, multiple delivery formats, or an origin-and-edge layout. The published documentation does not establish that OME is faster, more reliable, or more resource-efficient than MediaMTX for this particular YouTube workload. Which should you choose?
| Need | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One stream relayed to YouTube | MediaMTX | It documents a YouTube RTMPS forwarding configuration directly. MediaMTX forwarding documentation |
| Transcoding or multiple playback formats | OME | Its project documentation describes an embedded transcoder and WebRTC/LL-HLS delivery. OvenMediaEngine project · OME Quick Start |
| Several kinds of incoming source | Compare the exact protocol directions in each configuration | OME lists WebRTC, SRT, RTMP, RTSP, and MPEG-2 TS inputs; MediaMTX documents a broad protocol set and explicit OBS publishing. A protocol being supported does not by itself establish that it works in the direction your topology requires. OME RTMP input · MediaMTX publishing documentation |
| Origin-Edge distribution | OME | OME documents Origin-Edge clustering. OME configuration |
| Simpler self-hosted setup | MediaMTX is a reasonable first evaluation | MediaMTX describes itself as zero-dependency and documents standalone and Docker installation, recommending Docker for production. OME’s configuration model covers providers, publishers, virtual hosts, applications, and optional Origin-Edge architecture. This is a setup consideration, not a measured comparison of installation time. MediaMTX installation · OME configuration |
| YouTube is the only viewer destination | Usually MediaMTX for a straightforward relay | OME’s direct viewer-delivery features matter more if this server must also serve viewers; they may add little when YouTube is the sole destination. This is an inference from the documented delivery options, not a performance result. OvenMediaEngine project |
There is no direct comparative benchmark or published resource-use or uptime figure in the cited official materials for this workload. Treat feature fit and operational complexity as the decision criteria rather than assuming one server is inherently more dependable.

How the MediaMTX-to-YouTube path works
A typical relay topology is continuous source or encoder → MediaMTX → YouTube Live. MediaMTX’s forwarding guide shows an RTMPS destination and stream key. Obtain the RTMPS URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room and use the endpoint YouTube provides there instead of relying on a hard-coded ingest hostname. MediaMTX forwarding configuration · YouTube RTMPS guidance
- Confirm the channel can go live. YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. YouTube live-streaming eligibility
- Prepare the source. Use an encoder or another continuous source that publishes to the MediaMTX path you intend to forward. Check the protocol direction in the current MediaMTX documentation and match the publishing path to the forwarding configuration. MediaMTX publishing documentation · MediaMTX forwarding documentation
- Configure YouTube forwarding. In the MediaMTX forwarding configuration, provide the RTMPS destination and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to publish to the associated stream.
- Use a compatible feed. MediaMTX’s YouTube forwarding documentation states that YouTube requires both audio and video tracks; video-only streams are silently rejected. For a generated loop or ambient scene, make sure the outgoing stream still contains an audio track. MediaMTX forwarding documentation
- Test in Live Control Room before relying on it. Preview the incoming feed, check both picture and sound, and monitor the broadcast after going live. Plan for continuity, not just a running process
A 24/7 broadcast depends on more than whether a server process stays alive. Plan for an uninterrupted source or fallback, stable host power and network, process recovery, YouTube publish recovery, and monitoring. The product documentation describes capabilities; it does not promise end-to-end uptime. YouTube recommends testing ahead, monitoring audio and video quality, and testing failover when a backup encoder is used. YouTube live-streaming tips
Do not depend on YouTube’s automatic archive for a 24/7 recording
YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a durable recording, arrange a separate recording or archive workflow; YouTube also recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. YouTube archive guidance · YouTube encoder setup

Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the feed | Wrong RTMPS URL or stream key, or a failed source-to-server publish. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, then verify the source is publishing to the MediaMTX path being forwarded. YouTube RTMPS guidance · MediaMTX forwarding documentation |
| Video-only feed is rejected | The outgoing stream lacks an audio track. | Ensure the published feed includes both audio and video; MediaMTX’s documentation says YouTube silently rejects video-only streams. MediaMTX forwarding documentation |
| Connection is live, but quality is poor or unstable | Encoder settings, available upload bandwidth, or the source may not sustain the selected output. | Check YouTube’s current bitrate guidance for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate, then monitor audio and video in Live Control Room. The recommended H.264 examples are 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps (YouTube Help, accessed 2026). Encoder settings and bitrates · YouTube live-streaming tips |
| Broadcast stops after a source or server interruption | A server alone cannot replace a missing source, host, network, or YouTube publish connection. | Check each link in the path, configure process and source recovery where appropriate, and monitor for failed publishing. Test the recovery path before depending on it. YouTube live-streaming tips |
| Expected archive is missing | A 24/7 stream exceeds YouTube’s stated archive window. | Do not rely on automatic archiving for a stream over 12 hours; use a separate recording/archive workflow. YouTube archive guidance |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is simply to keep uploaded video live on YouTube without maintaining a self-hosted relay, StreamNeo is a managed alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
