Mediacom can be a good internet provider if its service at your address has the speed, upload capacity, and total price your household needs. It is not one uniform network: Mediacom sells wired Xtream service and fixed-wireless Bolt service, and wired customers may receive cable broadband or upgraded fiber-to-the-home service. Independent customer survey results are mixed, so check your exact offer and plan terms rather than relying on a company-wide verdict.
What internet service does Mediacom offer?
Mediacom sells residential wired service under the Xtream name and fixed wireless under Bolt. Availability, plan names, speeds, and network type depend on the service address. Mediacom’s Internet Broadband Disclosures distinguish cable broadband from service on its 10G platform, including fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) locations. That means “Mediacom internet” should not automatically be read as fiber: ask which network and plan are offered to your home.

In an October 2025 announcement, Mediacom said multi-gig and symmetrical-speed upgrades were complete in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The company listed Internet 300 at 300/100 Mbps, 1 Gig Symmetrical at 1,000/1,000 Mbps, and 2 Gig at 2,000/1,000 Mbps in those upgraded areas. It forecast that its wider upgrade program would reach one million households by the end of 2026; that was a company forecast, not a statement that those tiers are available throughout its footprint today. Mediacom’s October 2025 announcement gives the dated location details.

Mediacom publishes average speed and latency measurements for selected plan and network combinations. The figures below are provider-reported averages based on customer-device measurements for wired service, not independent controlled tests or guarantees for an individual home. Mediacom says actual speeds vary and that advertised speeds are “up to” figures, not speeds it guarantees a customer will achieve at all times. Network use, computers and local-network devices such as Wi-Fi routers, latency, external services, and internet segments outside the company’s control can affect results. The disclosure, last updated February 20, 2026, explains those qualifications.

| Network and plan | Advertised download/upload | Provider-reported average download/upload | Average latency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cable Internet 300 | 300/20 Mbps | 415/76 Mbps | 31 ms |
| Cable 1 Gig | 1,000/50 Mbps | 911/105 Mbps | 30 ms |
| 10G/FTTH Internet 300 | 300/100 Mbps | 415/142 Mbps | 25 ms |
| 10G/FTTH 1 Gig symmetrical | 1,000/1,000 Mbps | 958/792 Mbps | 24 ms |
| 10G/FTTH 2 Gig | 2,000/1,000 Mbps | 2,072/965 Mbps | 23 ms |
| 10G/FTTH 5 Gig | 5,000/1,000 Mbps | 5,351/933 Mbps | 29 ms |
Upload speed is a meaningful difference between the published cable and upgraded-network examples. Cable Internet 300 is listed at 20 Mbps upload, while the FTTH version is listed at 100 Mbps; the cable 1 Gig example is 50 Mbps upload, versus 1,000 Mbps for the FTTH symmetrical tier. Do not assume a symmetrical gigabit upload is part of every Mediacom plan. Confirm the network type and upload speed in the offer for your address.
Is Mediacom reliable, and what do customers say?
CableTV.com’s Mediacom review reports survey results of 62% reliability satisfaction and 73% speed satisfaction among surveyed Xtream customers; 59% said they were highly satisfied overall. The outlet ranked Mediacom 17th among 21 providers and gave it an editorial rating of 3.09 out of 5. These figures suggest better sentiment about speed than reliability in that survey, but they do not establish the experience of every customer or predict service at a specific address. The page says editors interviewed hundreds of customers but does not establish a precise field year or sample size in the accessible text. See CableTV.com’s Mediacom review for its survey context.

For currently available wired Xtream Connect, Internet 300, and 1 Gig plans, Mediacom’s terms list unlimited downstream usage. Its upgraded 10G/FTTH table also lists 2 Gig. The terms differ for Bolt fixed wireless: Bolt Internet and Bolt Internet+ are listed with 2,000 GB monthly downstream allowances and additional usage fees. Grandfathered plans may have separate terms, so check the plan actually on your account. The plan terms were last updated March 1, 2025; consult the current terms and your order documents because they can change. Mediacom’s internet usage allowance policy lists the plan distinctions.

Downstream allowances are separate from an upstream-use provision. Mediacom’s terms say that on certain plans, upstream usage above 1 TB in a monthly billing cycle may cause upload speed to be reduced by 50% for the rest of that billing month. The current wired tiers in the terms table are marked as potentially subject to reduced upload speeds. If you regularly send large files, back up data to cloud services, or stream live video, check whether this provision applies to your specific plan.
How much does Mediacom cost after the promotion?
Promotional prices are not the same as the long-term bill. Mediacom says address-specific rate cards or customer service provide current plan pricing, and that promotional rates, equipment rental, installation, and other fees may apply. Its residential agreement says offers can vary by location and customer and may be changed or discontinued. Mediacom’s broadband disclosure and residential customer agreement set out those qualifications.

Those advertised prices assumed autopay and paperless billing and excluded installation, activation, taxes, and post-promotion standard rates. Offers and availability can change, so these are not quotes for a particular address. CableTV.com’s review provides its price-snapshot disclosures.

Mediacom’s October 2025 announcement describes Advanced WiFi as a whole-home solution featuring eero TrueMesh and Wi-Fi 7 capabilities. CableTV.com’s review snapshot reports eero equipment included with plans, but equipment and terms can vary by offer. Ask whether a router or mesh equipment is included, whether it carries a recurring charge, and what happens if you use your own gear. If you are considering adding mesh Wi-Fi, first confirm what your plan already supplies and whether new equipment fits your home and network; the available information does not establish a specific Mediacom modem model.
Are there lower-cost Mediacom offers?
Mediacom’s October 2025 announcement described Xtream Connect at $14.99 per month, plus modem rental if applicable, with 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload for households in its territory participating in specified assistance programs: NSLP, SNAP, Medicaid, Federal Public Housing Assistance, SSI, or WIC. Its December 2025 release described a separate $29.99 monthly, five-year price-lock Xtream Connect offer for first responders, including installation and activation, and said the qualifying-household program continued. These are dated offers with eligibility conditions, not a guarantee of current availability or price. Check the current terms and eligibility directly with Mediacom. How to decide whether Mediacom is a good fit
Compare the address-specific offer with any alternatives you can actually order. Use the same household needs and time period for each comparison:
- Confirm availability and network. Check the service address and whether the offer is cable, FTTH/upgraded service, or Bolt fixed wireless.
- Match speeds to your use. Consider download needs for streaming and downloads alongside upload needs for video calls, cloud backups, and sending large files.
- Compare the full bill. Add equipment and one-time fees, account for any autopay discount, and include the standard rate after the promotion.
- Read the usage terms. Check downstream allowances and any upstream threshold that can affect upload speeds.
- Assess local service experience. Use survey evidence as context, then ask neighbors or check local outage information where possible; broad survey results do not settle a street-level question.
- Verify Wi-Fi equipment. Find out what router or mesh system is included and whether it meets your home’s coverage needs.
If a billing, speed, availability, or equipment problem remains unresolved, the FCC accepts informal consumer complaints. Filing is a route for seeking help, not evidence that a complaint will produce a particular outcome. The FCC Consumer Complaint Center explains the process. Mediacom’s residential agreement says customers may cancel with at least seven days’ notice by calling or visiting a local office. Review the agreement for its current terms.
