Election-year advertising can lift results for broadcasters, while streaming puts pressure on traditional TV and creates new ways to reach viewers. The impact varies by company, revenue mix, and reporting period.
Do media stocks pay dividends?
Some do; dividend policy is set by each company’s board, not by the media sector as a whole. To assess a particular stock, look at its recent declared dividends and payments alongside cash generation and the company’s latest disclosures. A past payment or stated annual rate does not guarantee the board will continue it.

For example, Comcast reported that its board declared quarterly dividends of $0.33 per share in 2025, including a fourth-quarter dividend payable in February 2026. It also reported $4.9 billion in dividend payments during 2025. These are historical company disclosures, not a promise of future payments. Comcast’s 2025 Form 10-K

Fox reported $243 million in dividend distributions during fiscal 2026. It estimated approximately $245 million in aggregate cash dividends for fiscal 2027, using its stated annual rate and share count as of June 30, 2026. That estimate depends on those assumptions and is not a sector benchmark or a guarantee. Fox’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K

Why can media stocks move around elections?
Political campaigns can spend heavily on advertising, particularly on broadcast television and local stations. That can make an election year look unusually strong for ad-supported companies and the following year look weaker. The comparison is a calendar effect as well as a business trend: separate political revenue from underlying advertising demand before drawing conclusions about growth.
Nexstar reported total revenue of $2.712 billion in 2025, down 13% from 2024. It reported political revenue of $373.229 million in 2024 and $38.787 million in 2025, attributing much of the overall decline to that reduction. The comparison illustrates how large election-year revenue can affect the next year’s results; it is not a forecast for all media companies. Nexstar’s 2025 Form 10-K
Election spending is only one influence. Comcast says domestic advertising is generally highest in the fourth quarter and in even-numbered years, citing holiday and political advertising. Major sports broadcasts and programming schedules can also affect advertising and distribution revenue. Advertiser budgets, audience size, and where viewers watch matter too. Comcast’s 2025 Form 10-K

Other companies can face similar cycles, but not in identical ways. iHeartMedia identifies macroeconomic conditions and political advertising cyclicality as factors affecting revenue. Local broadcasters, national networks, and audio businesses therefore may have different exposure to the same election calendar. iHeartMedia’s 2025 Form 10-K

How does streaming competition affect media companies?
Streaming changes both where audiences watch and where advertisers can reach them. It competes with traditional television for viewers and advertising, but it can also give media companies a direct subscription business or an ad-supported platform. Whether that opportunity offsets pressure on older businesses depends on the company’s distribution and advertising mix, content costs, sports rights, and platform economics.
Comcast describes audience fragmentation and streaming as risks to traditional television, while reporting Peacock within its Media segment. Its filings do not establish that Peacock fully offsets declines in linear network results. Comcast’s second-quarter 2026 filing reported $1.9 billion of Media segment revenue related to Peacock for the three months ended June 30, 2026, and $4.0 billion for the six months ended June 30, 2026. The company notes that these figures include event-related effects; they are not standalone Peacock revenue, a subscriber count, or a measure of Peacock profitability. Fox likewise describes pressure on linear viewing and competition from ad-supported streaming, while operating Tubi. Its results show why the traditional advertising business remains relevant: Fox reported fiscal 2026 revenue of $17.126 billion, including $8.058 billion from distribution and $7.339 billion from advertising. Advertising revenue rose from $6.865 billion in fiscal 2025, with Fox attributing the increase partly to sports programming. These figures describe Fox’s fiscal years, not an industry-wide streaming trend. Fox’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K

Do not treat “media stocks” as one business. Filings and results are easier to interpret when you compare companies on the same dimensions and keep fiscal-year, calendar-year, quarterly, and year-to-date figures distinct.
Best Value
- Revenue mix: Check the contribution of advertising, distribution or affiliate fees, subscriptions, content licensing, and other sources.
- Advertising exposure: Consider local versus national markets, political cycles, sports schedules, seasonality, and sensitivity to advertiser budgets.
- Streaming position: Identify whether the company has a subscription or ad-supported service, and whether it reports actual service results or only describes strategy. Segment figures should not be mistaken for a platform’s standalone economics.
- Dividend policy: Use the company’s own declarations and payments for the relevant period. Do not infer a continuing rate from a past declaration or assume a sector norm.
- Evidence period: Confirm the reporting year and whether each number covers a full year, a quarter, or a year-to-date interval before comparing it with another company.
Because dividends and financial results change over time, check the latest company filing and board disclosures for the period you are assessing.
