Neither mechanical nor magnetic keyboards are better for everyone. Choose a magnetic Hall-effect model if you want adjustable actuation or Rapid Trigger and the specific keyboard suits your hands and setup. Choose a mechanical board if tactile or clicky feedback and a wider choice of familiar switch feels matter more. The technology label alone does not determine comfort, sound, or suitability: compare the exact model’s switches, software, layout, and connectivity.
How mechanical and magnetic switches register a keypress
Mechanical switches close physical contacts
A traditional mechanical switch uses a spring, stem, and metal contact plates. Pressing the key far enough brings the contacts together and registers the input. Mechanical switches commonly come in linear, tactile, and clicky profiles: respectively, smooth travel, a noticeable bump, or a bump with an audible click. These categories describe a switch’s feel; they do not guarantee how loud or satisfying a particular keyboard will be. HP explains the mechanical switch mechanism and profiles.

Hall-effect switches sense position magnetically
In a Hall-effect design, a magnet moves with the key stem while a sensor on the keyboard’s PCB reads its position. Rather than detecting only the closure of contacts, the system can track movement through the key’s travel. Compatible firmware can use that position data to set when a press registers. CORSAIR describes this arrangement; Gateron, a switch manufacturer, also explains how magnetic position sensing differs from contact-based registration.

That capability belongs to the working system, not simply to a switch. The magnet, sensor, PCB, firmware, supported switches, and software need to work together. Check the specific keyboard’s documentation rather than assuming every magnetic board offers the same adjustments or compatibility. Gateron describes these components as part of the implementation.

What adjustable actuation and Rapid Trigger actually change
Adjustable actuation changes the trigger point
On a compatible magnetic keyboard, software may let you choose how far a key must move before it registers. That can help tailor a trigger point to a particular key or task. A very shallow setting can also make a key easier to press accidentally, so choose settings that you can control reliably.
The available range and adjustment steps depend on the model. For example, ASUS specifies 0.1–3.5 mm actuation in 0.01 mm increments for the ROG Falcata. Those are specifications for that product, not a standard shared by all magnetic keyboards. ASUS lists the Falcata’s features and specifications.

N key rollover, and supports WIN key lock to prevent accidental touches in intense games
Rapid Trigger responds to a key’s movement
With a conventional mechanical switch, the key has to return past its fixed reset point before another press can register. Rapid Trigger on a compatible magnetic keyboard can reset and register a key again as it moves through its travel, without requiring it to cross the original actuation point. That behavior may suit repeated taps, such as movement inputs in a game that responds to them. CORSAIR explains the feature’s reset-and-reactivation mechanism.

Mechanical vs. magnetic keyboards at a glance
| What to compare | Mechanical | Magnetic Hall effect |
|---|---|---|
| How a press registers | Physical electrical contacts close when the switch is pressed far enough. | A PCB sensor reads a moving magnet’s position; compatible designs can use that position to trigger a press. |
| Feel and sound choices | Common choices include linear, tactile, and clicky switches. | Feel depends on the exact board and switch. The CORSAIR MGX Hyperdrive and Hyperdrive Core switches, for example, are described as linear. |
| Actuation point | Fixed for a given switch. | May be adjustable in software on supported models; range and adjustment increments vary. |
| Repeated key input | A key must return past its fixed reset point before it can register again. | Rapid Trigger can reset and register again based on movement through the key’s travel. |
| Compatibility and customization | Switch options and hot-swap support depend on the board. | Sensor, PCB, firmware, supported switches, and software must be compatible. |
| Layout and connectivity | Compare the particular board’s layout and connection options. | These vary by model too; magnetic sensing does not guarantee a particular layout or wireless option. |
These are differences in mechanism and available features, not a verdict on whole-keyboard speed, typing comfort, or build quality. A manufacturer’s specification describes its product; it is not an independent comparative test.

If you specifically want tactile feedback or an audible click, a mechanical keyboard is the more direct place to look because linear, tactile, and clicky switches are common options. Try the exact switch where possible: labels describe broad feel categories, not the sound or comfort of a whole keyboard.

Consider a hybrid only after checking switch compatibility
Some boards are designed to accommodate both magnetic analog and traditional mechanical switches. Logitech says its G512 X has 39 dual-swap beds for those switch types; the same comparison page identifies its sensors as TMR. TMR and Hall effect are both magnetic sensing approaches, but they are distinct implementations, so the G512 X should not be described as a Hall-effect model. Confirm which positions and switches are compatible before treating a hybrid board as interchangeable. Logitech G’s comparison distinguishes the G512 X’s TMR sensors from its Hall-effect model.
Logitech identifies the G PRO X TKL RAPID as a Hall-effect keyboard on that same comparison page. This is a manufacturer comparison, not an independent head-to-head test of the two keyboards. Read Logitech G’s comparison.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Manufacturer explanations and product pages establish how these mechanisms are intended to work and which features particular models claim to offer. They do not establish that magnetic keyboards as a category deliver a universal speed, typing-comfort, or gaming-performance advantage. No neutral comparative dataset or independent controlled whole-keyboard test is established here, so treat adjustable actuation and Rapid Trigger as capabilities to evaluate for your use—not guaranteed performance gains.
