Choose a full-size keyboard if you want a dedicated number pad and the usual key groups immediately available. Choose a 75% board if you want a compact layout that keeps the function row and arrow keys. A 65% board is smaller still, typically keeping the arrows but moving function-row commands to a secondary layer. The right choice depends on which keys you use directly—not on the percentage label alone.
What do 65%, 75%, and full-size mean?
These labels describe a keyboard’s overall form factor and distribution of key groups. They are not typing layouts such as QWERTY, AZERTY, or Dvorak, and they are not regional arrangements such as ANSI or ISO. Nor do the percentages guarantee exact dimensions or a fixed key count: layouts vary by manufacturer and model.

The practical distinction is which groups remain dedicated and easy to reach. Corsair’s size guide and RTINGS’ keyboard size guide describe common arrangements while noting variation. Keychron’s illustrative counts are 68 keys for 65%, 84 for 75%, and 104 for full-size; those are category examples, not requirements for every board.
How the three layouts compare
| Layout | Typically includes | Main advantage | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| 65% | Alphanumeric keys, dedicated arrows, and a limited navigation group; usually no dedicated function row or number pad. | Compact footprint while retaining arrow keys. | Function-row commands and some other keys may require a function layer; right-side keys vary by model. |
| 75% | Alphanumeric keys, a compact function row, arrows, and some navigation keys; no number pad. | Keeps direct function-row and arrow access in a compact arrangement. | Keys and clusters sit closer together, and navigation keys vary. |
| Full-size | Alphanumeric keys, function row, navigation cluster, arrows, and number pad. | Direct access to the familiar key groups, including a dedicated numpad. | Uses more desk space. |
Full-size is commonly described as having 104–108 keys, but there is no strict standard. RTINGS gives that range; Keychron uses 104 as its full-size example. Its archived guide also gives 84 as an example for 75% and 68 for 65%. These figures describe example layouts, not market statistics or exact counts for every product. See RTINGS and Keychron’s keyboard-size guide.

Which layout should you choose?
Choose full-size if you rely on a dedicated number pad
A full-size board is the straightforward choice if you regularly enter numbers, use the full set of key groups, or prefer the familiar separation between the alphanumeric area, navigation keys, arrows, and numpad. Its compromise is the larger footprint. If you want a smaller main keyboard but still need frequent numeric entry, a separate numeric keypad is an option; check its connection type and compatibility with your operating system before buying.
Choose 75% if you want the function row and arrows
A 75% layout keeps the function row and arrow keys while removing the dedicated number pad. It suits someone who often uses F-keys but can work without a numpad. Navigation and control keys may be compressed or rearranged, so check the specific board’s layout image rather than assuming every 75% model retains the same keys.

Choose 65% if compactness matters more than direct F-key access
A 65% board typically retains dedicated arrow keys and some navigation keys, but omits both the function row and numpad. Function commands and other less-used actions may be accessed through a function layer or key combination. This arrangement can work well if you are comfortable with layers and do not need a dedicated numpad; inspect the right side of the keyboard to see exactly which navigation keys are present.

What to check before buying
- Look at the layout image. Confirm which keys are dedicated, especially the right-side navigation and control keys.
- Check your regional arrangement. Key counts and physical arrangements can differ by region; confirm the exact configuration of the model you plan to buy.
- Consider your actual routine. Think about how often you use F-keys, navigation keys, and numeric entry, and whether using layers would feel acceptable.
- Verify dimensions for the exact model. The percentage label alone does not establish a board’s precise width or desk footprint.
- Check keycap compatibility before replacing caps. Compact boards can use nonstandard key sizes or arrangements, so compare the replacement set with the specific keyboard layout.
Keychron puts the trade-off succinctly: “The smaller you go, the more desk space you save, but keep in mind what keys you actually need for your workflow.” The cited layout guides describe which key groups are commonly retained; they do not establish that one layout is universally more comfortable or improves performance.
