1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYes—APIs are still needed after MCP. An API exposes data or operations to software; the Model Context Protocol (MCP) standardizes how compatible AI applications discover and invoke capabilities exposed by MCP servers. An MCP tool can call an existing API, so the two often work together rather than compete.
What is the difference between MCP and an API?
An API is an interface a program uses to request data or perform an operation. For example, a weather service might offer an HTTP API that accepts a location and returns current conditions. MCP is an open protocol for communication between an AI application and an MCP server that offers context or capabilities. The protocol project describes MCP’s architecture as a data layer based on JSON-RPC and a transport layer that carries those messages: MCP architecture.

| Question | Direct API integration | MCP integration |
|---|---|---|
| What does it connect? | An application to a service or system’s data and operations. | An AI application (client) to an MCP server that offers capabilities. |
| How does the application learn what it can call? | The application’s integration code uses the API’s interface and documentation. Some APIs also provide machine-readable descriptions. | The client can request a server’s available tools and their descriptions and input schemas. |
| What performs the underlying operation? | The API implementation. | A server-side tool handler, which may call an existing API. |
| Does it guarantee compatibility with every client? | No. The application must implement the relevant API integration. | No. MCP provides a common protocol surface, but individual clients may support different features and transports. |
The comparison is about layers, not a rule that APIs lack descriptions or that MCP replaces an API’s backend. MCP’s tools specification defines tool names, descriptions and input schemas, and supports listing tools; it does not require every API integration to work the same way. See the MCP tools specification.
How does MCP work with an API?
An MCP server can present an AI-friendly tool and translate its structured input into a request to an existing service API. The client and model interact with the tool through MCP; the server uses the weather API to do the actual service operation. This separation means a team can add an MCP interface without replacing the system-facing API used by other applications.

- The client asks the MCP server for its available tools using
tools/list. - The client makes the discovered tool information available to the model. Based on the conversation and available tools, the model may request a tool call; MCP does not prescribe that a model always calls one or dictate the user-interface flow.
- The client sends the selected tool name and structured arguments to the server.
- The server validates the arguments, calls the underlying API if needed, and returns a result through MCP.
Tool discovery and invocation are protocol interactions; the choice to expose a capability, enforce permissions, validate inputs, and handle failures remains part of the server and application design. MCP’s tools documentation describes discovery and invocation without prescribing a particular user-interface pattern.
Runnable example: an MCP weather tool that calls an HTTP API
This small Python example makes the layers concrete. The MCP server exposes get_weather(location: string); its handler calls Open-Meteo’s geocoding and forecast endpoints. MCP handles discovery and tool invocation, while the weather service’s HTTP API supplies the data. No API key is required by the public endpoints used here. The example is provided as runnable code, not as a claim of tested execution.

The decorator registers a tool with the server. Its function name, description and typed argument let an MCP client expose the capability and its input shape. The handler then makes ordinary HTTP requests to the service API. For production, add deliberate handling for timeouts, upstream errors, ambiguous place matches, rate limits and any location-data privacy requirements.
3. Run it and connect a compatible MCP client
Start the server from the project directory with python weather_server.py when configuring a client that launches local stdio servers. The process communicates over standard input and output; keep diagnostic logs off stdout so they do not interfere with protocol messages. Add the server using the client’s MCP-server configuration, pointing its command to the virtual environment’s Python executable and its argument to the full path of weather_server.py. Configuration labels and formats vary by client, so use that client’s current setup instructions.
After connecting, the client should be able to list get_weather and its location input. A user can then ask for the weather in a city; if the model selects the tool and the client permits it, the client sends the structured call to the server, which returns the API data. This local stdio setup is for compatible clients; it is not a remote HTTPS deployment recipe.

How does MCP transport work?
MCP messages use JSON-RPC; the transport determines how they are delivered. The specification page dated 2026-07-28 describes two transports in its transport overview:
Recommended Free Tools
- stdio: A client launches a local server subprocess and exchanges newline-delimited messages over its standard input and output.
- Streamable HTTP: A remote client sends messages to one HTTP endpoint. The server responds with a JSON object or, where appropriate, a request-scoped server-sent events (SSE) stream.
The protocol semantics are shared across these transports, but clients do not necessarily support every transport. Confirm the chosen client’s connection and authentication requirements before designing deployment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should you use MCP, a direct API integration, or both?
- Use a direct API integration when an application needs a specific service operation and its developers are implementing that integration directly.
- Add MCP when an AI application needs a reusable, discoverable interface to tools or context from an MCP server.
- Use both together when the MCP server should expose an AI-facing tool while preserving an existing API for that tool’s backend or for other clients.
MCP can make capability exchange more consistent across compatible AI clients, but it does not make every server portable to every product. Support for tools, resources, prompts, transports and authentication depends on the implementation and client.

What should you check before deploying an MCP server?
Match the client’s supported features
Do not infer support from the MCP protocol alone. For example, Anthropic’s Messages API MCP connector documentation, accessed 2026-10-04, describes a connector for remote servers that supports tool calls only. It requires an HTTP-exposed server, supports Streamable HTTP and SSE, and does not directly connect to local stdio servers. Those limits describe that connector, not MCP generally. Check the current Anthropic MCP connector documentation for its supported subset.
Secure remote access and user actions
For production deployments, OpenAI’s developer guidance recommends stable HTTPS endpoints using Streamable HTTP, and the MCP authorization flow when tools access private user data or take actions for users. This is OpenAI’s implementation guidance, not a guarantee imposed on all MCP deployments. Review the current OpenAI MCP server guidance and the selected client’s requirements. Design authorization, input validation and confirmation for sensitive actions as part of the application; the protocol itself is not a substitute for those controls.
Plan for tool discovery and changes
Tool listings can be paginated and cached. Keep names, descriptions and input schemas accurate, and handle a server’s tool-list changes rather than assuming the client has an eternal, complete listing. The tools specification documents listing behavior and schemas at MCP tools.
Why MCP does not make APIs obsolete
MCP is an AI integration protocol, not a replacement for the service interfaces that systems already use. A server can map an MCP tool to an API call, allowing compatible AI clients to discover and invoke a capability through MCP while the underlying service continues to provide its API. Whether that extra interface is worthwhile depends on the need for a common AI-facing integration and on the clients, transports and security model involved.
Anthropic described MCP as “an open standard that enables developers to build secure, two-way connections between their data sources and AI-powered tools” in its announcement published November 25, 2024: Introducing the Model Context Protocol.
