Short answer: A 2026 page reports lower latency for MCP stdio than for remote SSE, but its published details are too limited to establish a general performance winner. More importantly, “SSE” can refer to legacy HTTP+SSE or to optional SSE streaming within the newer Streamable HTTP transport. Those are not interchangeable comparisons.
For production, use stdio when a client launches a local server process; use Streamable HTTP for a server that must be reached remotely. Choose based on deployment, scaling, security, and message-flow needs, then benchmark the specific protocol version and implementation you plan to run.

What the published benchmark reports
The page “Production Benchmarks: Stdio vs SSE Transports in the Model Context Protocol”, published by World Programming Society on September 14, 2026 and attributed on-page as “Originally by Storm,” says it measured 10,000 tool executions. It reports these results for stdio and remote SSE:
| Measure | Stdio | Remote SSE |
|---|---|---|
| Mean invocation latency | 2.1 ms | 19.4 ms |
| p95 invocation latency | 3.8 ms | 32.1 ms |
| p99 invocation latency | 6.2 ms | 48.7 ms |
| Connection setup | 0 ms for a persistent pipe | 45 ms for TCP handshake plus TLS |
These are the page’s reported figures, not independently verified measurements. Its visible content does not provide enough detail about hardware, software versions, workload mix, network placement, concurrency, warm-up, repetitions, measurement boundaries, or raw data to establish reproducibility or show that the results generalize to other deployments.

- Exquisite design: usb-to-serial,Gold Plated USB RS232 connector and PVC cable ensure high performance and extra durability. Powered by USB port, this USB to DB9 series RS232 adapter cable is designed to fit easily into your handbag.
The page also gives memory estimates: about 32 MB RSS per active process for a Node.js stdio worker, about 21 MB per Python FastMCP worker, under 7 MB per compiled Go or Rust worker, and about 42 MB shared across incoming streams for a centralized SSE daemon. These, too, are claims from that page; the visible material does not establish the conditions needed to compare them across runtimes or workloads.
Why “SSE” needs a version label
MCP messages use JSON-RPC, but the transports determine how those messages move between client and server.

Stdio is a local subprocess connection
With stdio, the client launches the MCP server as a child process, writes messages to its standard input, and reads responses from its standard output. The server may write logs to standard error; standard output must contain valid MCP messages. This is a process-and-pipe arrangement, not a network connection.

Legacy HTTP+SSE and Streamable HTTP are different transports
The earlier HTTP+SSE transport used separate HTTP endpoints for client-to-server messages and server-to-client event streaming. The March 26, 2025 MCP specification replaced that transport with Streamable HTTP: an independent server process communicates over HTTP POST and GET, with optional SSE streaming. Compatibility support may still be needed when clients or servers must work with older HTTP+SSE implementations.

- Serial adapter allows a serial device to be connected to a USB computer
- Plug and play convenience:DB9 serial port is seen as a COM port by your computer, and is available for use by any program that accesses COM ports
- No need for an external power adapter:draws power directly from your computer via the USB connection
- DB9 serial port supports data transfer rates up to 230 Kbps:twice the speed of a standard built in serial port
- LED shows adapter status and data activity at a glance
Consequently, a result labeled “remote SSE” cannot be treated as a measurement of current Streamable HTTP unless the benchmark identifies the protocol version and implementation it tested. The specification history makes that distinction especially important: a July 28, 2026 Streamable HTTP revision describes changed behavior. Always identify the wire format and version when comparing performance.
Which transport fits a production deployment?
MCP maintainers’ December 19, 2025 transport roadmap describes stdio for local deployments and Streamable HTTP for remote deployments as the two official transports, while noting that custom transports can suit specialized needs. That is the project’s stated direction, not a comparative performance result.

| Decision factor | Stdio | HTTP transport |
|---|---|---|
| Deployment | The client launches a local child process. | The server runs independently and accepts HTTP client connections. |
| Message flow | Messages move through stdin and stdout pipes. | HTTP requests carry messages; streaming can use SSE. |
| Flow control | The C# SDK comparison describes implicit stdin/stdout flow control. | In Streamable HTTP, POST responses remain open; in legacy SSE, POST returns 202 before the handler runs. |
| Scaling | Each client has a process connection. | Stateless Streamable HTTP can scale horizontally without session affinity; stateful modes may require affinity. |
| Server-initiated messages | Supported in the SDK comparison. | Support depends on HTTP mode; check whether the chosen stateless or stateful mode supports the required messages. |
| Security and operations | The client and server share a local process boundary. | The service is network-facing and needs appropriate authentication and protections. |
The scaling, flow-control, and message-support descriptions in the table reflect the MCP C# SDK transport guide; they should not be assumed to describe every SDK or implementation. Its mode matrix distinguishes stdio, stateless and stateful Streamable HTTP, and legacy stateful SSE. The guide says its ASP.NET Core integration disables legacy SSE by default and notes that legacy SSE’s immediate 202 response does not provide HTTP-level backpressure before a handler runs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSecurity requirements for HTTP deployments
The March 2025 specification warns HTTP implementers to validate the Origin header to prevent DNS rebinding, bind local servers to loopback where applicable, and implement proper authentication. Without appropriate protections, a malicious website could attempt to interact with a local MCP server. These are implementation safeguards, not reasons to infer that one transport is inherently secure in every deployment.

How to benchmark the transport you will actually deploy
No independently reproducible, matched comparison of stdio against current Streamable HTTP is established by the cited sources. To make a useful decision, measure your own implementation under comparable conditions and record enough context for another operator to interpret the result.
- Identify the protocol precisely: record whether the HTTP side is legacy HTTP+SSE or Streamable HTTP, and specify the protocol revision and SDK version.
- Match the deployment: include the real client and server placement, network path, TLS, proxy, and connection reuse behavior. A local pipe and a remote network route do not have equivalent setup costs.
- Use representative requests: test realistic message sizes, tool execution time, concurrency, and streaming or server-initiated messages where your application needs them.
- Define the measurement: separate connection setup from invocation latency, state how warm-up and repetitions work, and report distributions such as mean, p95, and p99 along with the measurement boundaries.
- Test overload and recovery: observe admission and backpressure behavior, then test failures and reconnection. These operational outcomes can matter more than a small difference in an isolated call.
- Measure resource use in context: report runtime, process count, memory method, and whether a centralized service shares resources across clients.
A meaningful conclusion is therefore conditional: the cited page’s figures favor stdio in its reported comparison, but they do not settle stdio versus current Streamable HTTP as a general production-performance question. The protocol generation, runtime, workload, and topology must match the system you intend to operate.
