To choose one, compare where it stores data, how it represents and retrieves memories, which clients it supports, how persistence and recovery work, and what operating a local or hosted service requires.
What an MCP memory server does
MCP, or Model Context Protocol, provides a way for an AI application to connect to tools and other capabilities. An MCP memory server makes memory available through that connection, so a compatible client can use information beyond a single interaction. It is a software service, not a special piece of hardware.

The official Model Context Protocol servers repository describes its memory implementation as “A basic implementation of persistent memory using a local knowledge graph.” In that design, entities are named nodes with a type and observations; relations are directed connections between entities. This is the design of that reference implementation, not a requirement for every MCP memory server. Model Context Protocol servers: Memory

What the reference implementation stores and how it runs
The repository documents local setup using NPX or Docker. Its default storage is a JSONL file, and the MEMORY_FILE_PATH setting lets you configure the file path. Those details apply to this implementation; another server may use a different storage format, deployment method, or retrieval approach. Memory README and setup examples

A local process and file give you a starting point for understanding where this implementation keeps its data, but they do not by themselves establish a security guarantee. Check the project’s current documentation to understand data flows, access controls, and how the file is protected in your environment.
Local, self-hosted, and hosted options
The documented reference server runs locally. Hosted memory is another deployment model: the official MCP Registry lists a hosted-memory entry from Mnemoverse, whose provider materials describe memory shared across supported AI tools. The provider says Enterprise self-hosting is available by agreement. These are provider descriptions, not independent assessments of security, performance, or availability. - [Local AI Inference & 70B Model Ready] Equipped with the AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 8845HS processor, NEXUS is engineered for heavy local AI workloads. With a full-size GPU bay, it runs 70B LLMs natively without an internet connection. Ideal for AI developers and tech enthusiasts who need private environment for coding and model testing.
- [132TB Mass Storage with ZFS Integrity] Features a hybrid storage architecture (3×NVMe + 4×3.5" HDD) supporting up to 132TB. Utilizing the enterprise-grade ZFS file system and ECC memory, it prevents data corruption and bit rot—a must-have for professional photographers and video editors safeguarding 4K/8K RAW footage.
- [OpenClaw-Driven Automation Workflow] The built-in OpenClaw execution layer allows complex automated tasks to be processed locally. Even when offline, your backup schedules and AI file organization continue seamlessly. Say goodbye to monthly cloud subscriptions and high latency.
- [Dual 10GbE & USB4 Ultra-Connectivity] Experience server-class speeds with dual 10GbE ports and a 40Gbps USB4 interface. It enables multi-user real-time collaboration on large project files directly from the NAS, ensuring zero-lag editing for creative studios and production teams.
- [Open-Source ZimaOS for Total Privacy] Running on the fully open-source ZimaOS, NEXUS ensures your data stays physically on-premise with no backdoors. It acts as a "Digital Fortress" for privacy-conscious families and small businesses who demand absolute data sovereignty.
- Start with local or self-hosted options if your workflow requires memory to remain within an environment you control. Confirm the actual data path and any external connections rather than relying on the deployment label alone.
- Evaluate hosted options if you need memory shared across multiple AI clients. Before adopting one, check where data is processed and stored, who operates the service, and its current retention, export, deletion, and service terms.
Neither deployment model is universally better. The right choice depends on your control requirements, workflow, and willingness to operate or rely on a service.
How to compare MCP memory servers
Data location and control
Find out whether memories stay in a local file, are sent to a hosted service, or move through a combination of systems. Identify who operates the storage and whether self-hosting is available under the terms you need. Review current data-flow and access-control documentation; “local” and “hosted” are not security guarantees. Reference implementation documentation · Provider repository
Memory representation and retrieval
Consider what your workflow needs to remember and how you will inspect or correct a recalled item. The reference server documents a graph of entities, relations, and observations. Other implementations may use different structures and retrieval methods, so check how each one represents memories and makes them available to the client. Client compatibility and setup
Confirm support for the exact AI client you plan to use. Check the server’s current configuration instructions, transport, and authentication requirements alongside the client’s own MCP setup guidance. The reference README gives examples for selected clients, but support and setup instructions can change. Memory README and setup examples
Persistence and recovery
Identify the actual storage location and determine how to back up, restore, export, or delete memories. For the reference implementation, the README names a JSONL file and a configurable path; do not assume another server uses the same format or offers the same recovery options. Also check what happens when its process or host restarts. Memory README
Operations, terms, and cost
Running software locally involves installation and maintenance. A hosted service shifts some operating responsibilities to its provider, but requires you to check current pricing, retention, export and deletion options, availability, and service terms. The available documentation does not establish a like-for-like comparison of price or reliability between the options. Reference implementation documentation · Provider repository
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical selection checklist
- Choose your deployment boundary: Decide whether memory must remain in an environment you control or whether a hosted service is acceptable.
- Match the memory model to the task: Check what information the server stores, how it connects related items, and how you can inspect or correct those items.
- Verify your client setup: Confirm current compatibility, configuration steps, transport, and authentication for both the server and your AI application.
- Plan for data continuity: Find the storage location and documented backup, restoration, export, and deletion procedures; test recovery if the system is important to your workflow.
- Review ongoing obligations: For local software, account for maintenance. For hosted services, read the current terms and check costs and data practices before committing.
What the available documentation does not establish
The documented options do not provide a common basis for comparing performance, pricing, privacy guarantees, or security certifications. Do not treat a provider’s feature descriptions as independent verification of those qualities. Check the current primary documentation and terms for the option you are considering, and make the decision against your own requirements.
