MCP, or Model Context Protocol, is an open protocol that lets AI applications communicate with servers offering tools, contextual data, and reusable prompts. It is sometimes described as the USB port for AI agents: a shared interface can connect an AI application to many services without a separate integration protocol for each one. But MCP is software, not a physical connector, and shared standards do not guarantee compatibility or safety.
What does MCP stand for, and what is it for?
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It standardizes how an AI application—often called a host—communicates with MCP servers that expose capabilities the application can use. MCP is not an AI model, nor is it a service or connector by itself. It defines conventions for exchanging messages and making capabilities available.

The protocol’s main server-side building blocks are:
- Tools: actions or information requests that a model can ask the server to perform, such as running a database query.
- Resources: contextual data the server can provide, such as a database schema.
- Prompts: reusable templates, potentially including examples for using available tools.
These are capabilities implementations may choose to support; an MCP client or server does not necessarily implement every feature.

Why compare MCP to a USB port?
The analogy captures the idea of one shared interface connecting an AI application to different servers. Instead of every application and service needing an entirely distinct communication protocol, MCP provides common conventions for exchanging capabilities.
The comparison has limits. USB is a hardware interface, while MCP is a software protocol. Implementations must support compatible protocol versions, transports, and capabilities; a shared interface does not promise that every client will work with every server. Nor does compatibility establish that a server is trustworthy or that an integration is secure.
How does MCP work?
The official architecture separates MCP into a data layer and a transport layer. The data layer defines JSON-RPC-based client-server messages, capability and version discovery, and primitives such as tools, resources, prompts, and notifications. The transport layer handles how messages travel, including framing, connection behavior, and transport-specific authorization.

- Connect and discover: a client communicates with a server and learns which protocol versions and capabilities it advertises.
- Choose a capability: the client can list available tools and select one that fits the task. It may also make contextual resources or reusable prompts available to the AI application.
- Send a request: the client sends the server a request using MCP’s message conventions; the transport carries it between them.
- Return the result: the server responds, and the client can use the result as part of the application’s context or workflow.
For example, an MCP database server could expose a query tool, a resource containing the database schema, and a prompt with examples of how to use the tools. The client and server still need compatible versions and support for the particular capabilities involved.
What changed in the 2026-07-28 specification?
The MCP maintainers’ release announcement on July 28, 2026 describes revision 2026-07-28 as introducing a stateless request/response core. The release also lists self-describing requests and optional discovery, HTTP header-based method and tool routing, Multi Round-Trip Requests for flows such as sampling and elicitation, cache hints, deterministic list ordering, a formal extensions framework, authorization hardening, and a minimum 12-month deprecation window. These are revision-specific changes, not proof that every deployed client or server already supports them. Check the versions and feature coverage of the implementations you use before relying on a particular behavior.
The maintainers also reported close to half-a-billion downloads per month across Tier 1 SDKs, and said the TypeScript and Python SDKs had each passed one billion total downloads. Those are maintainer-reported SDK download counts—not counts of unique developers, deployed servers, or users.

Agent identity and delegated authority were identified as continuing areas of work.
Is MCP secure?
There is no useful blanket answer that MCP is simply secure or insecure. The specification provides authorization guidance for HTTP implementations, but the security of an integration also depends on the client and server, transport, credentials, tools, and deployment.
A November 25, 2025 research preprint identifies risks including malicious instructions embedded in content, compromised servers, and agents acting beyond their intended roles. The researchers discuss data-driven exfiltration, tool poisoning, and cross-system privilege escalation. These are risks identified in that research, not findings that the protocol itself guarantees will occur.

Practical safeguards include:
- Review what each server can access and what actions its tools can perform.
- Use scoped, per-user authorization rather than granting broader access than a task requires.
- Treat external content and tools as potentially untrusted, and check inputs and outputs.
- Sandbox execution where appropriate, enforce policy, and audit actions.
- Track provenance and watch for anomalous activity; centralize governance where the deployment requires it.
These controls reduce exposure but cannot guarantee that an integration is safe.
What should you check when choosing an MCP implementation?
MCP is a protocol, not a guarantee that two products behave alike. Evaluate the specific client and server documentation rather than relying on the protocol label alone.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesQuick Recap
- Revision and feature coverage: check which protocol revision and optional capabilities each side supports.
- Transport: confirm that the client and server support a compatible communication method.
- Exposed capabilities: inspect the tools, resources, and prompts the server offers, and whether the client can use them.
- Authorization: understand how the implementation authenticates users and limits access.
- Deployment and operations: establish whether the server is local or remote and what controls exist for versioning, sandboxing, policy enforcement, and auditability.
