Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Claude Desktop documents local servers as well as separate cloud-brokered connectors; ChatGPT’s full MCP app support is a web beta for eligible workspaces; and Copilot’s capabilities vary across its IDE, CLI and GitHub surfaces. Cursor is listed by the MCP project as a client, while Google’s cited documentation supports a narrower conclusion about Gemini CLI and developer workflows.

What this comparison covers
Model Context Protocol (MCP) lets compatible AI clients connect to external servers that expose capabilities such as tools, resources and prompts. Support is not necessarily identical across clients: the MCP project notes that “Each client may support different MCP features, allowing for varying levels of integration with MCP servers.” MCP client documentation

This comparison concerns Claude Desktop and Claude’s remote connectors; ChatGPT workspace MCP apps on the web; Cursor as an editor client; GitHub Copilot across specific product surfaces; and Gemini CLI or coding-agent integrations. It does not establish that every consumer app from any of these vendors supports third-party MCP servers.

Claude: local Desktop servers or remote connectors
Claude Desktop
Anthropic documents connecting local MCP servers to Claude Desktop and installing desktop extensions. Extensions can come from a directory or be installed as custom .mcpb files; supported server implementations include Node.js, Python and binaries. Sensitive extension configuration can be stored using operating-system secure storage, and administrators can control extension use. See Anthropic’s local MCP server and extension guide.
A local server runs on the user’s machine, so this route differs from a remote service that must be reachable over a network. Check the extension’s origin and requested permissions before enabling it, especially if it can perform actions or access local data.

Remote custom connectors
Anthropic separately supports remote custom connectors across Claude, Cowork and Claude Desktop on the listed Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. Free accounts are limited to one custom connector. These connectors are brokered through Anthropic’s infrastructure, so the remote server must be reachable from that infrastructure; they are not the same mechanism as a local Desktop server. Team and Enterprise organization owners control adding connectors. Details are in Anthropic’s remote MCP connector documentation.

OpenAI documents custom MCP apps through ChatGPT developer mode. Full MCP support, including write and modify actions, is described as a beta rolling out on the web to Business and Enterprise/Edu workspaces. Pro users can connect MCPs with read/fetch permissions in developer mode; MCP apps are not available on mobile. Workspace administrators and owners control enabling and publishing apps, with additional role-based access controls for Enterprise/Edu. Consult OpenAI’s developer mode and full MCP connector documentation for current eligibility and controls.

ChatGPT’s documented model connects to remote MCP servers. For private, on-premises or developer-machine servers, OpenAI points to Secure MCP Tunnel. This matters when a server is not publicly reachable: do not assume that a local server configuration used by a desktop client can be transferred directly to ChatGPT. Beta status, plan eligibility, tool permissions and workspace controls can change.
Cursor: listed MCP support, but verify current product details
The MCP project’s archived example-client page lists Cursor as supporting MCP tools and describes Composer integration with STDIO and SSE. That is a useful indication of the integration described by the project, not a current guarantee of Cursor’s setup steps, transports or feature set. The listing is archived and the current Cursor documentation is not corroborated here. See the MCP project client listing and verify current Cursor guidance before choosing it for a specific server or workflow.

GitHub Copilot: support depends on which Copilot surface you use
GitHub documents MCP for Copilot IDE integrations, Copilot CLI, the GitHub Copilot app, and GitHub.com cloud agent and code review. In IDEs, GitHub describes broad local-server support while remote-server support is being added in named editors; Copilot CLI supports both local and remote servers. GitHub’s own MCP server is available in some Copilot surfaces. The product-by-product details are in GitHub’s MCP overview.

For managed organizations, Business and Enterprise policy can enable or disable MCP for governed users. So an individual’s ability to add a server may depend on both the Copilot product surface and organization settings. Check the relevant IDE or CLI instructions and your organization’s policy rather than assuming that support in one Copilot surface applies everywhere.
Gemini: the available evidence is about developer tooling
Google’s developer guide documents a Gemini API documentation MCP server and shows how to inspect active connections in Gemini CLI. It also lists checks for several coding assistants. This supports considering Gemini CLI for developer workflows, but it does not establish third-party MCP server parity across all Gemini apps or consumer surfaces. See Google’s Gemini API MCP guide.
How to choose the right client
- Match the work surface. For coding inside an editor or terminal, compare the specific Cursor or Copilot integration and Gemini CLI workflow. For general knowledge work or deployment to a team, consider the relevant Claude or ChatGPT workspace surface.
- Trace the connection. Determine whether the server runs locally, is reached directly as a remote endpoint, or is accessed through a cloud-brokered connector. Confirm that the required network route works, especially for private or on-premises servers.
- Check capability depth. Identify whether you need tools, resources, prompts or write actions. A client being described as MCP-compatible does not mean it exposes every MCP capability.
- Confirm access and governance. Check plan eligibility, who may add or publish a server, what permissions it receives, and whether an administrator can restrict it.
- Account for setup and maintenance. A local process, a packaged desktop extension, a remote endpoint and a workspace-published app have different configuration and update paths. Choose a model your team can maintain safely.
There is no universal winner on the available evidence: the best fit depends on the actual client surface, connection requirements and controls your work requires. An independent comparison published in May 2026 is also a dated snapshot; it highlights audience, distribution, authentication and discovery as useful comparison dimensions, not as a substitute for current vendor documentation.
