MCP App vs. MCP Server vs. Connector: The 2026 Terminology Guide

An MCP server provides tools and resources, a host connects to it, and an optional MCP App supplies an interactive UI. “Connector” depends on the product’s definition.

An MCP server provides capabilities such as tools and resources; an MCP host connects to that server; and an MCP App is an optional interactive interface a compatible host can display. “Connector” has no single meaning established by the core MCP documentation, so its definition depends on the product using the term.

What is the difference between an MCP server and an MCP App?

They describe different parts of an integration. The server is the protocol-side program that makes capabilities available to an MCP host. The App is an interactive UI associated with a tool and a UI resource. A server can provide tools without providing an App.

Term Where it fits What it does Required?
MCP server Provider, connected to a host Exposes capabilities such as tools and resources It is the protocol provider in this relationship
MCP host Connecting application, often called a client in product documentation Connects to servers and mediates their capabilities Needed to use the server through MCP
MCP App UI layer associated with a tool Provides an interactive interface for a compatible host to render No; the UI is optional
Connector Defined by the product that uses the label Could mean a server, managed connection or configuration, host-side integration, or broader integration package Not a universal MCP role

How do MCP Apps work?

A server advertises tools and UI resources. A tool’s UI metadata can point to the relevant resource, commonly using a ui:// resource URI. If the host supports MCP Apps, it retrieves the resource and renders the View in a sandboxed iframe. The View receives tool data through the host and can request further server tools through the host-mediated protocol.

There are two distinct communication paths: the MCP protocol connects the host and server, while postMessage connects the host and embedded View. The View does not replace the server or create a direct host-to-server connection. See the official MCP Apps overview for the architecture and lifecycle.

Does an MCP server need an App?

No. The App UI is a progressive enhancement, not a requirement. A host without MCP Apps UI support can still use the underlying tool and receive text instead of a rich interface. That means a server’s core function need not depend on whether a host can display its UI.

Is an MCP connector the same as an MCP server?

Not necessarily. “Connector” is not established in the reviewed core MCP documentation as a synonym for server or App. A product may use it for the server itself, a managed connection or configuration, a host-side integration, or a bundle of integration pieces. Check that product’s own definition before comparing its “connector” with MCP architecture terms.

How does the OpenAI Apps SDK relate to MCP Apps?

They are related, but not field-for-field identical implementations. OpenAI’s migration reference maps flat _meta["openai/..."] fields to nested _meta.ui.* fields, and maps direct registration patterns to MCP Apps helpers such as registerAppTool() and registerAppResource(). It also lists different resource MIME types: OpenAI’s text/html+skybridge and MCP Apps’ text/html;profile=mcp-app.

The migration guide calls out OpenAI features that do not yet have MCP equivalents. Developers porting an integration should use the current OpenAI Apps SDK to MCP Apps migration guide to check mappings and feature parity, rather than assuming the SDKs are interchangeable.

What was the MCP Apps support status in 2026?

The MCP Core Maintainers announced MCP Apps as an official MCP extension on January 26, 2026. Their announcement listed Claude on web and desktop, Goose, Visual Studio Code Insiders, and ChatGPT “starting this week.” That is a dated snapshot, not a guarantee of current availability: client implementation, plan eligibility, and platform support can change. Consult the January 26, 2026 announcement for what was stated at launch and check each client’s current documentation for its present support.

For implementation context, the MCP TypeScript SDK documentation describes v2 as the stable release line implementing the 2026-07-28 specification. That version label is distinct from the stable conceptual distinction between server, host, and App; verify the SDK and specification versions relevant to a project.
