McDonald’s says its AI pricing tool recommends prices rather than setting them: franchisees make the final decision, the company said on October 1, 2026. Reuters had reported two days earlier that the tool analyzes transaction and competitor data to generate restaurant-level recommendations, while some franchise owners described pressure to use it. The distinction is between an algorithm suggesting a price and the system automatically charging one—not whether software informs the process.
What McDonald’s says its pricing tool does
In its October 1, 2026 statement, McDonald’s says the tool provides restaurant-level information about local market conditions, including geography, and does not set or change menu prices. “The bottom line: The tool provides information. People make the final pricing decisions,” the company wrote. It says franchisees independently set their prices and are not required to accept the recommendations.
The company also says the tool does not determine what an individual customer pays, use an individual customer’s willingness to pay, or change prices in real time or at different hours. McDonald’s says it does not use dynamic pricing. Its account is the company’s description of its own system; the cited material does not independently verify the model’s configuration.
What Reuters reported about the system
A Reuters report published September 29, 2026 described a pricing engine that uses machine-learning algorithms to analyze data from millions of daily transactions across nearly 14,000 U.S. restaurants and produce what McDonald’s calls an “optimal price” for menu items at each location. Reuters said it reviewed screenshots of the pricing interface and interviewed nine people with first-hand knowledge of the company’s strategy. Its reporting described competitor-price information and restaurant-level customer willingness-to-pay indicators.

That reporting describes recommendations informed by customer-related data at the restaurant level; it does not establish that the system picks a different price for each person. McDonald’s explicitly denies individual-level pricing. The exact variables, their weighting, and how much any recommendation influences a final menu price are not established in the cited accounts.
Why franchisee accounts complicate the company’s description
Reuters reported that five franchise owners described pressure to use the pricing tools. It cited a January internal communication requiring franchisees to be “constructively engaging with McDonald’s approved Pricing Consultant and Tools.” Former store owner Karen King told Reuters, “You don’t really have much of a choice anymore.” Reuters said McDonald’s did not address her specific claim.

Those accounts sit uneasily beside McDonald’s statement that franchisees are free to reject recommendations. They describe reported pressure to engage with the tools, not proof that the AI sets final prices or that every franchisee experiences the same pressure. The available reporting does not resolve how often owners disregard recommendations in practice.
Do nearby McDonald’s charge different prices because of AI?
Reuters checked the McDonald’s app in September 2026 and found a Big Mac listed for $5.69 at one company-run Fresno restaurant and $6.89 at another about two miles away—a reported difference of 21%. Reuters said it could not determine whether the gap resulted from the tool’s recommendations or from other factors. The comparison shows that nearby locations can list different prices; it does not show what caused the difference.

McDonald’s says local costs, demand, competition, and economic conditions have long informed pricing decisions, and that locations only a few miles apart can face different conditions. The company says its global network has more than 46,000 restaurants. Those are McDonald’s explanations for local variation, not independent findings about the particular Fresno prices.
Keep the separate AI initiatives distinct
McDonald’s’ September 23, 2026 NEXT strategy announcement separately describes ArchIQ, a generative-AI initiative for restaurant efficiency. That announcement does not identify ArchIQ as the menu-pricing recommendation tool, so the two should not be treated as the same system.

What “AI sets prices” means in this case
The phrase can refer to two different things: an algorithm can calculate or suggest a price for a restaurant, or it can automatically choose and apply the price customers pay. McDonald’s denies the second and says people—franchisees—make the final decision. Reuters’ account supports the narrower claim that an algorithm generates restaurant-level recommendations and that some owners reported pressure around the tools. The cited reporting does not establish automatic price changes or prove that a specific local price difference was caused by an AI recommendation.
