Mbps means megabits per second; MB/s means megabytes per second. The lowercase “b” is a bit and the uppercase “B” is a byte. Since one byte equals eight bits, divide Mbps by eight to get the ideal equivalent in MB/s: a 100 Mbps connection converts to 12.5 MB/s. That is a unit conversion, not a guarantee that a download will run at that measured speed.
What do Mbps and MB/s stand for?
Mbps is megabits per second, a rate commonly used to describe internet connection speeds. NIST lists “Megabit per second” as the meaning of the abbreviation Mbps in its CSRC glossary.

MB/s is megabytes per second, a rate you may see in a browser, download app, or file-transfer tool. The capitalization matters: b means bit, while B means byte. A byte contains eight bits, as the NTIA explains in its Broadband Reference Guide.

These are arithmetic conversions, not promised download results. NTIA describes broadband speed as data transfer measured in bits per second; its guide also distinguishes a connection’s transfer rate from the size of stored data, which is measured in bytes.
Why does a 100 Mbps plan download at about 12 MB/s?
Because 100 divided by eight is 12.5. A download display near 12 MB/s is therefore in the range you might expect from the unit conversion; it does not mean the connection is eight times slower. BroadbandNow uses this 100 Mbps-versus-roughly-12-megabytes-per-second example in its explainer, updated September 17, 2026: Megabits (Mbps) vs Megabytes (MBps).

The conversion isolates only the relationship between bits and bytes. It does not account for all conditions that affect a real transfer, so an app’s observed rate can differ from the ideal. File size and available bandwidth also affect how long a transfer takes. There is no single overhead percentage that can be applied to every download, and the displayed rate alone does not identify the cause of a difference.

No. A file size tells you how much data there is; a rate tells you how much data moves in a given time. File sizes are commonly shown in bytes, such as MB or GB, while internet speeds are commonly stated in bits per second, such as Mbps. NTIA’s guide explains this distinction and gives historical download-time examples, including an 835 MB movie. Those examples are from its 2014 reference guide, not current speed benchmarks.

There is also a decimal-versus-binary convention to keep in mind when estimating transfer time. The NTIA guide’s data table uses values such as 1 MB = 1,024 kilobytes, while network rates are expressed in bits per second. The bit-to-byte relationship remains eight bits per byte, but an exact time estimate depends on the file-size convention and real transfer conditions.

Mbps is a measure of data rate, but it is not the only connection characteristic a person may care about. Upload speed describes data sent from your connection, while latency describes delay; neither is another name for the Mbps-to-MB/s conversion. The New Mexico Broadband Program’s Broadband Basics also treats broadband terms as distinct measures.

When comparing a plan with a download display, first check whether each number is in bits or bytes and whether it is an advertised or nominal rate versus an observed transfer rate. Convert the units before drawing conclusions; the calculation makes the figures comparable, but does not by itself explain a measured result.
