How Matnsaz differs from a conventional Urdu keyboard
Urdu uses an Arabic-derived script in which letters connect and their forms can change according to position in a word. Matnsaz organizes its main keyboard around that structure. Its official product page describes three layers: a letter’s basic form (rasm), the dots that distinguish consonants (iʿjām), and vowel marks (tashkīl or iʿrāb).

Instead of assigning a separate key to every distinct Urdu letter, the shape-based layout groups letters with a shared basic form and supplies dots where needed. The developer says this reduces the layout from 39 keys to 21. That is a description of the design, not evidence that users type faster or make fewer errors.

The product page characterizes the standardized Pakistani Urdu layout as mapping Urdu letters phonetically onto QWERTY keys, and presents the mismatch between Urdu letters and English keys as part of the motivation for Matnsaz. This is the developer’s explanation of its design choice, not a universal account of every Urdu keyboard.

What Urdu-specific features does it offer?
Previews of letters in context
Matnsaz can show how a letter’s shape will appear in a word before it is selected. The product page describes this preview as optional and positions it as a way to help users recognize contextual forms. It is a feature claim, not an independently tested learning or accuracy result.
Nastaliq and Naskh
The official product materials describe support for both Nastaliq and Naskh presentation. Readers who care about a particular style should check the relevant store listing and settings on their device, because platform feature descriptions can differ.

Soft space for breaking letter joining
A dedicated soft-space key inserts a zero-width non-joiner (ZWNJ). Unlike an ordinary space, it prevents adjoining letters from joining while leaving no visible word gap. This is useful when a word or expression needs a break in cursive joining without being split by a regular space.
Diacritics and character substitutions
The product page says commonly used diacritics are added automatically, while others can be entered manually. It also describes automatic replacement of certain confusable or variant Unicode characters. The available materials do not quantify how often these behaviors apply or how they compare with other keyboards.

Other layouts
For users who prefer a more familiar arrangement, the official page and Apple listing describe alphabetical and QWERTY-based alternatives on iOS. The sources do not establish that every layout option is available on Android.
Can you install Matnsaz on Android or iPhone?
Yes. The developer announced Android availability on August 11, 2026, and the Google Play listing shows an update dated August 20, 2026. Matnsaz is also listed for iPhone and iPad. Store availability and compatibility may vary by device and region, so consult the live listing for your platform.

Matnsaz is a software keyboard, not a physical keyboard or accessory. After installing it, follow the operating system’s prompts to enable and select the keyboard; exact settings labels may vary with OS version and device.

In its August 11, 2026 Android launch announcement, Matnsaz/Shanasai says a custom Urdu dataset called Makhzan powers predictive text and autocorrect. The announcement credits LUMS’ Bunyad Journal, Al-Mawrid’s Ishraq, and IBC Urdu as publication contributors, and says volunteers worked with LUMS’ Technology for People Initiative to turn the material into a resource for researchers and developers. It describes Makhzan as free to use. These are the developer’s account of the dataset and its contributors; independent validation of its scope or quality is not established by the cited materials.

The same announcement quotes founder Zeerak Ahmed: “Urdu software today is deeply unsatisfactory, it relies on English paradigms and is not designed for users that have never used computers in English”.
What is known about privacy?
Google Play’s data-safety section reports “No data shared with third parties” and “No data collected.” This is the store’s presentation of the developer-provided declaration, not an independent privacy audit. Review the current listing and the app’s permissions for the information applicable to your device and version.
How to decide whether Matnsaz fits your typing habits
The main question is whether a shape-based layout suits you better than a familiar letter-by-letter arrangement. Consider these practical factors:
