Whether its AI can run offline depends on the specific phone; “old phone” alone is not enough to establish compatibility.
What Mathaka can—and cannot—answer
The useful question is “Did I take my medicine?” A reminder can prompt you to check, and a tap or optional voice reply can record what you report. That record is a self-report, not proof of ingestion. In a small feasibility study, researchers monitored bottle-cap openings as a proxy event; opening a bottle still did not establish that medicine was swallowed. Shade, Rector and Kupzyk’s 2021 study involved 15 older adults with chronic pain, with medication events monitored for five of them.

A safe concept should not ask generative AI to infer a dose from memory, prescribe a dose, or tell someone to take an extra dose after uncertainty. The person or caregiver should enter or confirm the schedule, and medication decisions should follow the prescription and advice from a healthcare professional.
How a reminder could fit into a daily routine
The NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service recommends understanding what a person already does to remember medicines and considering a cue linked to a familiar activity, such as a meal. Its guidance, updated 11 September 2026, says: “Evidence shows that simple reminders can help, but greater benefit is seen when reminders are combined with active follow-up from healthcare professionals.” It also reports that personal or interactive text and telephone reminders appear most effective among the reminder approaches discussed. A practical interface could make the next action obvious: “taken,” “not yet,” or “unsure,” with a simple way to review the day and correct a mistaken tap or voice transcription. Those are design recommendations, not established features or tested results for a finished Mathaka product. If the real difficulty is an inconvenient regimen, a reminder app cannot resolve it; a healthcare professional can assess whether reducing the number or frequency of medicines is clinically appropriate.
What studies say about reminders and devices
Reminder aids may be useful, but their presence does not guarantee better adherence. The 2017 REMIND randomized clinical trial enrolled 53,480 pharmacy-benefit enrollees in the United States and compared a standard pillbox, a digital timer cap, a pill-bottle strip with toggles, and control. Its analyzed results found no statistically significant adherence difference between control and any of the three device groups. That finding applies to the trial’s participants and interventions; it does not establish that every reminder design or care arrangement has no value. See the REMIND trial.

The voice-reminder evidence is narrower still. In the 2021 feasibility study, five participants had medication-event monitoring. Across 168 scheduled pain-medication reminders, a monitored bottle-cap opening followed 25 reminders (14.6%) within five minutes and 107 (63.7%) within 30 minutes. These are timing observations from a small monitored subsample, not a general success rate or evidence that a dose was taken.
Choosing a reminder that suits the person
Options range from a familiar routine to a chart, alarm, app, or dispenser. Choose based on the person’s needs and the job the aid must do—not on a claim that one device works for everyone.

Needs involving vision, hearing, hand movement, or memory can change which cue is usable. If a regimen is complex, a caregiver or healthcare professional may also need to help keep the schedule accurate. For medicines removed from their original packaging, the NHS guidance recommends checking stability with a pharmacist.

Offline generative AI is technically possible on supported devices, but that does not establish that Mathaka will run on an unspecified older handset. Google AI Edge documents on-device model deployment and an experimental app for running generative models offline. The Google AI Edge Gallery project lists Android 12 or later among its requirements; that is a requirement for that project, not a universal minimum for every possible AI implementation. Compatibility depends on the exact make and model, Android version, available memory and storage, chipset, battery condition, and the model and runtime chosen. Model assets can also take substantial storage. Until those details are checked against the intended software, offline support on “an old phone” remains an open compatibility question.

This is an architectural recommendation, not a verified feature of a released Mathaka product. Running locally may reduce the need to send medication-related prompts to a cloud service, but it does not by itself establish privacy or security; those depend on how schedules, logs, backups, and caregiver access are implemented.
